Zac sums up in 4 minutes what I spend at least an hour a week attempting to explain to my listeners... I am going to make a business card with this video's URL on it for when people ask me about this.
Can you make one for why we have to play commercials too so I never have to talk to anyone again!??
You make some good points, Zac - especially about the actually process of making a radio edit version of a song and the horrible practice of cutting out the black guys. That's bullshit. I see your point and agree with you that "Let's get it started" is a lot better than "Let's get retarded". <--- The original doesn't make sense. XD haha! Oh my gosh, I KNEW you were gonna say "go fuck yourself" at the end! I swear I knew it! Trippy, dude. HA BISKY!
TLC "Waterfalls" - VH1 used to air an edited version that completely cut out Left Eye's rap, which is the centerpiece of that whole song. Likewise, I've heard radio versions that cut that part out by playing the instrumental during her rap. Such a shame.
I discovered a radio edit version of "Play that Funky Music White Boy" where they had edited out the words "White Boy." I have no idea who that edit was for. O_o
One song that I really enjoy is Midnight Surprise by Lightspeed Champion. The first time I heard it I was unaware that it was listening to a radio edit. That version is roughly 3 and half minutes but the full version is close to 10 minutes long. People can really miss out on what the song is trying to say or the mood it creates with some of these edits.
You should hear the radio edit of the song "She Said" by Plan B. It's basically a rap song, except the chorus is him singing. In the radio edit, they take out the entire rap portion (85% of the song) and leave it instrumental. O_o
radio edits that cut super long songs into radio friendly songs are cool but i usually hate or find hilarious word replacements. like lily allens its not fair there is a line on the album that says "i spent ages giving head" but on the radio it says "i spent ages kneading bread"
i only knew the voliance thing in the song i didnt know there was a censored version and i knew about the black eye peas thing and this is a super ha bisky upload i love you zac
nah it's not to trick moms into buying the album, it's 'cause radio stations are to pussy to play the real shit, IT'S POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GONE MAD YO! (I have no idea why I just got so black but I don't care I'm leaving it there :P )
in the movie Empire records, Coyote shivers. the song "Sugar High" in movie the lyrics are "They all said life is like, a bowl of cherries but, sometimes it seems like anything but..." and so on... the album version is "They all said she's just, another groupie slut, I said I thought you were anything but." So they do it movies as well
My mom actually got me the censored album of Limp Bizkit Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water. One of the songs ... hot dog I believe. Says Fuck about 60 times in it but as a kid it was just the music with no word there. "it's a ____d up life, in a ____d up world." for about the entire song :P
i think that one example of this you would enjoy would be the radio version of 'represent' by the nu-metal act HED PE. basically the song was about signing to an independant label after being ruled by a bigger label on their last album, and finally having the freedom to say what they wanted. and then they pretty much rewrote the entire song so it could sell their album better. there was one bit where they replaced 'motherfuckers' with 'vampires' like 8 times.
Rebecca Black followed that "cut the black guy out" trend... but that's a bad example because he never should've been in that song in the first place.
What about the radio edits when the radio station does it themselves because there isn't a radio edit made (usually rock... I think Buckcherry was one), where they'll just have a duck quacking or some stupid shit. But then it's Buckcherry so there's nowhere to go but up.
The weirdest edit of a song I've ever heard was the "family friendly" edit of Don McLean's 'American Pie,' used for Band Hero. In it, all instances of the word "whiskey" were removed. However, all instances of the next two words "and rye" were left in, leaving "And the good old boys were drinking and rye."
A current one I don't get is Young, Wild, and Free. They say "So what we get drunk, so what we /don't sleep/..." instead of 'smoke weed,' but later in the song they still have the "Roll one smoke one" line. If you're going to censor weed you might as well go all the way with it.
