God Bless My grandfather who wrote this song. He would have Turned 90 last wednesday. May God Bless his wonderful soul and may he rest in peace. I Love You Daniel Hannon
My Dear old home in the Kerry Hills....... I often heard my Mother (RIP) sing this song. It was one of her favourites. This is a great song. Lovely singer too. Makes me sad though.
You might have noticed that I praised the singer and only had one comment re the pronunciation of "Knocknaclarig"; So there is no need to start a reply with "an oh for god s sake" (sic). My comment was meant in the same way as someone from Athenry would hear a singer pronounce the town as "At henry" versus "Athen-rye". Simple as that.
It was a simple comment on a good song and singer.
@johnfoconnor Fair Play John - my family is from Brosna as well. Fond memories of National School in 1962 and 1963 before we moved back to NY. Last time in Brosna was in Three Counties Pub
I have this on my ipod, heh, how about that for modern. I doubt if PJ Murrihy was ever in Brosna, but he does not do a bad job singing the song. His only mis-pronunciation is of "Knocknaclarig", we would make the third syllabe "claw" rather than "clay", as in "knock-na-clawrig". But it does not distract atall from enjoying the song. The old wood road is still the same.. and I was recently in the "Three Counties" bar too, great place, great people.
@hopebrosnan yes. "The derivation is from the pre 10th century O' Brosnachain, meaning the 'son of the descendant of Brosna' it is claimed that the development is from the place called 'Brosna' in Kerry."
