  • another idea to get generators, if you find someone who works at a tractor supply or something that get return generators they usually sell cheap if they dont run because they usually sell for scrap but the generators usually work in them but returned because they wont start. im buying some for 20 dollars each 1500 watts

  • And what do you use for internet connection and computing? Are you using 3G data connection or a satellite service? I like the setup. Could you give more details on other aspects of the house such as sewer system, water collection, refrigeration for food. Do you have a orchard, etc. Do you produce your own food there or is it more a side project/hunting shed? Keep up the good work. Utah is gorgeous! :)

  • One idea you could try is lining the entirety of your cabins roof with solar panels.

  • @gaaraman082

Solar panels work best only in direct sunshine and sun in winter is at a lower arc. My panels are on the porch roof which faces true south for optimal sunshine.

  • @solarcabin You could theoretically make a setup that turns the panels as the sun moves across the sky. This wouldn't use much electricity at all and would bring a much better solar harvest...

  • would a voltage regulator control the voltage to your battery

  • @SuperMax328

You can attach a power controller and dump system to these wind turbines but I would look at the Air X in my other videos if you will be using these for a full time power source. They have an integrated power controller.

  • @solarcabin - With all the solar and wind turbines, how many watts are you producing now? I love your videos and I hope to do exactly what you did, but with a 1kw solar system. :)

  • @TheIPODtouchFanboy

The combined system has an output total of 1kw but of course it depends on how much sun and wind I get. Solar is 580 watts and wind turbine is 400 watts. Go with more solar before trying wind.

  • what state is this cabin in ?

  • @914light

    I am in Utah.

  • @solarcabin ahh ok Lord yes it gets very cold up there .. burr ...but it's pretty ..: )

  • You'r the MAN!! I watch all of your videos!! Love it!!

  • badass dude. defiantly doing this when i get out of school

  • @biggmoneyme He IS!!!

  • The wind generator is awesome, where did you happen to find it?

  • Do the wires just tangle and untangle when the system turns?

  • You think it would be sufficient to run a TV non-stop?

  • @Gentilseulement

Not this small one and it is only used to trickle charge my batts in winter. The 400 watt I just installed will provide a lot more power. Watch my other vids for that.

  • ever have the problem of over charging your battorys? or that thing spinning too fast and braking? how did you get it so the wire will alow it to spin free but not get tangled?

  • @MrStemkilla

The turbine has an overload protector to prevent overcharging and a swivel to keep wires from tangling.

  • usawindgen add d0t then c0m this is the vendor site I just found it.

  • here in Quebec a windmill goes for about 1000.$ if you dont mind me asking....how much did yours go for and where did you by it ? i want to get off the grid but not at any price, i might build one to :) great vids by the way

  • Wondering how the wind turbine is working out for you. Sometimes when you are not expecting it, you end up with too much energy! Have you hooked it up to a amp meter to get some data on how well it puts out? Check out the forums at techluck DOT com

  • Could this turbine run a fridge and stove?

  • @47Indigo47 According to what he says, no. This is only to top up his batteries to ensure they are always fully charged. While the battery is discharging because of the use, let`s say a TV, the turbine recharges the battery constantly. That`s what I understand, anyway.

  • How do you have this thing grounded? It would suck for lightening to hit it and all the power bank. I am thinking of getting one of these would a simple ground wire of copper and a rod in the ground do the trick?

  • how much did it cost?

  • where did you buy this wind generator at? what is the motor off of?

  • How does this wind turbine handle the power connection vis-a-vis the turning of the turbine to face the wind? It looks like the leads just hang down... is there no slipring setup? Doesn't it get tangled from turning too far one direction?

  • I wish I could live like that :)

  • WELL DONE !!

  • Okay, so I expanded the comment section below and see you already addressed the humming. I don't see we'd have anything to be concerned with. We could sleep with a fan on in the bedroom all year round without the noise bothering us. We also have a battery operated essential oil diffuser going 5-10 hours a day, too. I doubt we would even hear the turbine.

  • A pole mount 30 feet or higher would be best.

There is some humming when you attach a turbine to a house but this can be reduced using rubber pads as dampers.

A house will deflect wind and reduce efficiency so a pole mount at least 50 feet from the house is recommended.

I put mine on the cabin to test it and be able to reach it for repairs but this year it will go on a pole.

  • We have a turbine we haven't put up yet. Still debating whether or not to mount it to the side of the house or not. We've heard you should not, because of the incessant "hum" the turbine gives off, and that it is heard throughout the house. It would be SO MUCH cheaper to put it up top rather than buy the guy lines and pole setup...

Is there a braking system on this? What to do in the event of a violent storm? We've had several storms with wind gusts over 50-60mph.

    Any input to share?

  • So it's been 5 months. How is the turbine working for you? At 125 Wt it seems to be about the same power as you have in solar panels. Do you notice an increase in avail power with the turbine in operation for this time?

  • The turbine works fine when the wind blows but this has been an odd winter here with very little wind ? It produces between 80-100 watts in a 5 mph breeze and helps top up my batteries.

  • im trying to go green myself. i saw in one of your comments you said a car alternator wont work as a wind turbine? Why is this? i was planning to create my own turbine to power up my batteries. and why would a solar power charger not work with the wind turbine to make sure my batteries arent over charged? thanks and great videos. they are helping me alot!

  • A car alternator takes way to much torque and speed to be used as a wind turbine. permanent magnet motors are used.

A wind turbine requires a dump controller that keeps a constant draw on the turbine or it will free spin when the batteries are full and damage the turbine.

  • are you using the same charger controller that the panels came with?

  • Sweet. When I build my cabin I'll probably get two for good measure. How much are they?

  • That one is 125 watt and cost $120 from ebay.

They will start producing in 5 mph winds so good in low wind areas like where I live. the bigger turbines need 10mph winds to even start turning.

  • What state do you live?

  • Awesome Brother thats the way I would of done It

  • Nice setup. Are you worried about lightening strikes? How high does the manufacturer recommend mounting above surrounding objects?

  • Pole is pvc and wires are grounded. No more dangerous than an antennae on your roof.

Its mounted above all nearby objects.

  • Very cool. Thanks.

  • what about when winds are too strong ?

  • The tail can be furled to direct it out of strong winds or it can be easily removed. I would not recommend this turbine for anything over class 2 areas.

  • Thanks so much! Now that I've seen it in action, and how easy and simple it was to put together, I'm more inclined to order me one! But I first have to figure out how it works connected to the batteries. Do you have a vid for that as well?

  • It just connects directly to the battery posts and then you can connect an inverter to the battery and run 120 volt ac appliances or run dc appliances directly from the battery.

  • Solar Cabin, great videos. You explain everything so clearly. Thank you. ...Bill

  • Hi, great job, can you tell us how well it charged your batteries? You said you would get another battery if it charged them up well..

Thanks! 100 Watts is much better than my $600.00 solar panel as that can turn 24 hours a day when opportune wind hits.

  • It starts turning at 5 mph and that will produce about 30 watts and at 10 mph its producing about 100 watts. 15 mph winds will give you 125 watts on average.

  • Now you can watch the big tv all night lol.

  • Hardly noticeable and the slight hum tells me when the turbine is working.

You could put a noise damper pad under the mount and I may do this in the future but for now I like hearing when it runs- go turbine go!

  • LaMar, I'm curious how much noise the turbine creates in the loft area. It would be interesting to have a clip of video from the inside.

    Enjoy your videos.

  • There is a slight hum that tells me it is working and no more noticeable than a fan or air conditioner running.

  • bet is has a hum inside the cabin?

  • That is in a great location, Looks to be running well.

    You are living the life.

    Great job.

    R/

    David

  • great job on the wind turbine looks like it will work great for your setup TAKE CARE
