@blameboy and @Shiftfallout If your school does no prepare you for this harsh reality, then you need to switch to a more realistic degree. Full Sail, for example, reinforces every single day that if you are not ready for these realities then you need to consider a major change.
Also, if you think the games industry is the only place that is this way, you are sadly mistaken. With the current economy, ANY salary job is being pushed more and more to pick up the slack to keep labor dollars (cont)
sometimes i just want to be stuck in a room full of nerds throwing plastic balls at each other and sniggering over rude words in the sim language i dont care if you thumb this up but this is how i feel
Im currently a junior in Highschool looking into a career in video game design, and was looking for anyone who may have resources I could use to get a grasp of what I'm getting myself into before I decide if this is what I want to do when I choose a college.
what people are forgeting about though IS THAT every job you do might have rough spots BUT if you LOVE and i mean LOVE creting games(like me)this is heaven even without all those "fun things" and even if you dont get to even play your games that often so everyone that whines about how crummy it is behind the scenes(which i highly dought) if your dedicated you could find this to be heaven
@TeTaniwhaNui well, they sure make good games, nothing more than that. And on that time when i made my comment i was probably "suffering" from a video game addiction, so you see...
Look up what crunch time is and how long it is ... that will make you think twice. Game development is a job, and a damned stressful one at that. If you like working 3 or 4 months of 20 hour days, 6 days a week then go for it! If not, maybe you should do a little more research and ask people who have had the jobs what they think. Jobs, any job, are never what you first expect them to be. It's called "work" for a reason.
What EA is about... hmmm.. let me see. Taking names then selling it into pieces to the hopeful fans that wait something new from their favorite series. Flooding the market with broke, stupid protected (that harass the costumers), games. Since there are plenty of ignorant gamers out there to buy it, the same way as they eat crappy hamburguers with toys.
And you keep not lissening the increasing hatred against you. You know that saying, "you can fool some people sometimes..."
ea sucks! they caceled Tiberium.....retards. all you people who say they know how to make a game are right, but they cant plaese the fans. thats thier weak point. Bungie and Gearbox forever!!!
What this video doesn't convey is what it's like about a year after you join. It doesn't show you having a quiet little cry in the train station around midnight because you're so tired of working 80 hour weeks and you know that when you get home your wife and children will already be asleep and all you just feel completely alone.
The problem I have with this approach, EA, is that you reinforce the idea that game development is all fun and games. While it can be fun and rewarding, its not just all fun and games. There is a lot of hard work, technical, creative, going into these projects. Too many people think since playing games is fun, that therefore making them will be just as easy and enjoyable. Its at that point when someone needs to push the reality check button.
I could not have put it better myself. There is quite a lot that goes into making a game. The reality of working in the game industry if you are serious is forgoing many social and personal time to put in the hours and work needed to complete projects. it's a sacrifice many find themselves unable to do. It's a great career and very rewarding, but many don't realize the price.
Remember, its not YOUR games when you work in the industry, its always a team creation, very few actually can claim to design every aspect of a big title. It always has to be a team mentality when making games for any company. This video is promoting their internship program for graduates. Its one option out of many. I would recommend going in as a level designer, start building a portfolio with mods and get an education in CS or Game design if possible,
Hmmm...... Well i am interested in Animation because i love to draw stuff and plus my result, so i think i should choose to be an Animationer. But hey! Thanks for the tips anyway! :)
Ah thats different, you cant make "your games" through animation though. I thought you were interested in design since only designers have a bad habit of saying "my games". Drawing is also different than animation. In a typical game studio you have the concept artists, maybe a cg team (blizzard's is larger than pixars) and the art asset team. Though all "art" they can require very different skills.
Anyone with a soul wouldn't work for EA
