Conservatives repeat: "we are happier than the liberals because we accept reality for what it is."

That doesn't hold when you are talking about other issues, such as freedom of religion, abortion, civil liberties (freedom of speech in particular), drugs, education, etc. In these, they don't accept reality; they shove their Christian beliefs down your throat and forget that the US was founded on, for instance, freedom of religion - apparently that's not worth "conserving."

Seeing this from outside the USA, I cringe when I hear that Obama is somehow a liberal - when he just extended the Bush tax cuts. The US, along with most of the world, is going so far to the right that the conceptual distinction between liberals and conservatives has lost all meaning.
