Well, I can tell you call that I heard this singer in concert. She not only sang but cast a spell over her audience - a magic that perhaps her recordings cannot achieve. - John Austin, Australia
What's with the relentless plugging of this Spanos guy on every page of the great songs? And from different identities - or are they? Jeez - people are actually able to make up their own minds!
@elenikiroy Yes,of course, people are able to make up their minds. Are you influenced by the comments you see on a certain video?I'm not, and have my own opinion. I also compared. But YT was created to give people opportunity to express their opinions and compare versions. Don't you think that some Spanos's fans could listen to many other versions and compare? It's not the end of the world. If there were more comments on this video you already wouldn't see at all someone mentioning Spanos long ago.
@jeanmolin55 I agree. You might also want to listen to another simply enchanting voice of Nicholas Spanos in L'heure exquise for comparison. Also tone, delicate sound, grace. Another wonderful version IMO.
@tamerlano236 My issue is certainly not with Vallin, who is heavenly, but with your constant need to espouse the glories of Spano at every chance. He is a fine singer, great, let it go...it just starts to verge on trolling after a point.
@tamerlano It's very subjective what sounds more heavenly to different people. For me Spanos's version is the very best. You are entitled to your own opinion as much as me and can think in a different way. But if my comments irritate you so much you can merely not read them. What's the problem? Happy New Year to you!
Thanks for this great clip. It's a real treat to hear Hahn play these unique pieces and to hear Vallin as well. I never heard of her before, but the Hahn songs are treasures to me.
I like Graham and Vallin. How can you compare really.
I think Graham's recording is impeccible. The only other artist that does recordings like that that I know of is Elly Ameling. I mean artists who when you hear you don't really think anything should be changed. Vallin's voice is fascinating. Such a direct use of the words. Not that she sounds like a tenor, but the direct diction reminds me of Caruso actually.
Magical! The piano gives me shivers!!! I haven't wanted to buy recordings in years, but now I know I want to get Hahn's complete recordings. I was only familiar with the recording where he sings and accompanies himself. You can tell they took the time to rehearse this thoroughly.
L'Heure exquise is breathtakingly beautiful and utterly divine when Ninon Vallin sings! It sounds so very 30s and it's authentic and heartfelt so it is great to listen to it at any age! I recently heard this song performed by a mezzo soprano, Susan Graham and it's just as beautiful too.
Because of you - I now have a new favorite! I love her so much! What lush legato. Intonation perfect. She is new to me. I love her! Vive la Vallin!!! I want to hear everything she has recorded. I hope she recorded much.
Many thanks for your answer. I'm sorry to have written in french, but I didn't notice you were not french. I have two sets for digitizing 78rpm, a recent turntable adapted with a 1955 Philips cell, and a big one from the 1930' coming from the U.S. (with needle).

Lovely and exquisite. Singers today have no concept of technique and artistry as exemplified by Vallin and artists of the Golden Era.

Nice. Great song. The best version on YT IMO is Nicholas Spanos's.

Versi, Musica e Voce: paradisiaci !
Reynaldo Hahn ha scritto davvero una musica divina.
Stupendi i versi di Verlaine.
La voce della Vallin è emozionante anche in Tyndaris.

All these Hahn-accompanied songs were in Romophone's complete compilation of the recordings of Reynaldo.
This Vallin side is, of course, supreme. She particularly catches the quiet rapture of the piece. Magnifique!

RAPTURE! le mot juste!!!

I sing this song, I think the singer could incorporate a little more feeling, not that it isn't a beautiful voice & song. I melts me into the ground.

I just dubbed this from an LP copy I have (Ninon Vallin - Airs d'Opéras and Melodié - References LP 2910023) with a cheap USB turntable.
