  • No, you make an ass out of you and you. Not me because I didn't assume.

  • The one dislike is Crazy Rhoda Zimmerman...

  • One of my favorite lines of the show. "Mr. unger, can you please talk faster or smaller"

  • im surprised they could say ass on tv back then!

  • You make an ASS of U and ME !!!! Did Gary Marshall come up with that himself ? What a line...what a great series. I watched it as a kid in the early-1970's but didn't get the humor until I was in high school and college.

  • Yeah, Lazlos, WPIX had some great late-night programming. Seems like every 20 years there's a great NYC sitcom -- The Honeymooners....The Odd Couple....Seinfeld. Means we're due in a few years for another good one !

  • The script wasn't all that good but the delivery was fantastic.

You just don't get actors like these anymore.

  • Just a note that this was not "invented" on this show. I have heard the assume phrase since long before the TV show.

  • funniest sitcom court scene ever. up there w Martin Lawrence..."the day of the geechie is over!" lmao

  • I grew up on this...great show unique and funny as hell.

  • watching this show was a part of my childhood.

  • For a number of years, from 11;30 PM EST to 1:00 AM or 2:00 AM ,WPIX would show an episode of The Odd Couple, then 1 or 2 episodes of the Honeymooners, and then 1 or 2 episodes of the original Twilight Zone TV Series. I think WPIX also used to show the old Batman TV Series late at night.

  • lol funny

  • Felix: You're hearing this?

    Judge: Can i help it?

  • I used Felix's same logic when some stupid college professor acccused me of breaking a printer when she made up a totally false story of me banging on the printer. When she said the word "assume" I also pointed out when you "assume" you make an ass of out you and me! It worked! I also asked her if she would swear on the good book of the Bible that she was telling the truth and naturally, she refused to because she knew her story was a lie.

  • I love the swipe Oscar takes at Murray at 2:31

  • I remember watching on WPIX everynight followed by the Honeymooners. I bought the entire series on DVD. Never gets old.

  • One of the funniest, most enduring, most quotable scenes in TV history.

  • Felix Unger aka Perry Mason.

This is one of my favorite episodes. Thanks for the upload.

  • This is classic. They dont have shows like this anymore. I do remember watching "The Odd Couple" on WPIX when I was a kid. Channel 11 does not have programs like this anymore either. I want the old WPIX back.

  • One of my favorite Odd Couple episodes!

  • I use this phrase whenever folks on the WGN mornin' news don't say that fellow anchors are on vacation. I call their voicemail line and use the phrase all the time, except that I say 'blank' instead of the 'a' word. God bless!

  • Episodes like this one made me want to live in NYC. It never happened, but I have a very deep and abiding affection for The Great City and these people. I was 15 or so when I saw this episode for the first time. Too, too funny and like nothing we have today.

  • Hilarious!!!

  • good vocabulary derived from compulsiveness-- "...iota of avarice, not one scintilla of cupidity for fiscal increment"

    - all episodes I saw were from syndication

  • I remember seeing this one years ago. It was on WPIX 11 in NY. I must have been about 13 at the time. I nearly fell out of my bed laughing. This is such a great show. These guys weren't being paid a million dollars and episode, they weren't fucking everything in sight. TV now is just bland and stupid. I don't even watch it. I don't have cable. The writing and acting came through in this one. Where is all the real talent?

  • @wasteland70

Dang. I was about 13 when I saw it on WPIX 11 too!

  • "When you ASSume, you make an ass out if you and me!". Still genius even now. Tony Randall was the best.

  • Classic! RIP Tony Randall

  • A pure classic. Never ASSUME

  • one of my fav shows growing up, its sad you never see this in reruns anywhere.

knowing how strict the censores were back then it amazing he got away with say ass on tv

  • Because...when you assume...you make an ASS of U and ME!!!!! ROFLMAO

  • Tony Randall was absolutely brilliant doing that bit! Classic!!

Ever since I heard that phrase, I've been saying it myself.

  • Lol Ass of u and me

  • LOL just go to 4:09 lol ASS-U-ME

  • 3:03 LOL!!!

  • One of my favoroute scenes

  • The first three minutes of this was always cut out from WPIX re-runs. This is my first viewing of this material...thanks!!!

  • Do you remember watching it after "The Honeymooners." and pre-empted if the Yankee game went long?

  • Well, I was watching the Odd Couple probably all through the 80's on PIX, and maybe as far back as the late 70's. I actually had about 3/4 of the episodes on VHS tape for a long time. The tapes dated back to 1983-85. It was cool just to see the old commercials on those.

  • I watched some of them when it was on ABC prime-time. In the summer of '76 watched it on WPIX 11 along with "The Honeymooners," after the 10 news, while staying with my grandma. If the Yankee games went long sometimes the Newscasts pre-empted those shows. I would love to see the old ads, as I look for some of them now on youtube. Why I don't know, probably nostalgia.

  • I was very likely watching OC as early as '76. My older brother did watch some of the prime-time broadcasts, and being the youngest in the family, I usually watched whatever was on. I certainly share in the nostalgia for those days. I own the first two seasons of the Odd Couple on DVD, but after hearing mixed reviews of the later seasons, due to material being edited, I haven't bought the rest. I'm still tempted to, so I can get scenes like this.

  • What you wrote is interesting, although I and the oldest member in our family, however, I too have the 1st two seasons on DVD, and plan to get the rest of the series. I haven't heard any reviews of the remaining 3 years and hope they're as good as the first two.

  • I remember those days. And WPIX just pulled it off the schedule yet again about 2 months ago.

  • WPIX had a great line-up back then for a while: two espisodes of "The Odd Couple" followed by the Honeymooners and then STAR TREK, which is how I got into it. Awesome.

Nothing like these shows on TV today. Everything's formulaic dreck mostly aimed at females and homosexuals.

  • @LazlosPlane WPIX had this 3 times a day for over a year. I never missed one episode.

Now it's like you say: Crap aimed at females and fagbags.

We need more shows like this today. It'd be great.

  • @LazlosPlane TOTALLY agree. Channel 11 was amazing.

  • Nice! Thanks for the video. These come in handy in internet debates.

  • This episode, and the night to dismember were my dad's absolute favorites. This brings back so many good memories. Thanks!!!

  • hillaaarriioouuss!!

  • "Mr Unger, can you talk faster or smaller?" Lol! Peep how Felix does/twist his body when he says, "...for fiscal increment." Funny az Hell!

  • Take heed to what Mr. Unger says about assuming! :-P

  • Your honor, it is the contention of the defense, that in their trafficking with the witness, the co-defendents had not one iota of avarice, not one scintilla of cupidity for fiscal increment.

Mr. Unger, can you talk faster or smaller?

    Objection sustained.

  • Went to Detroit because sick of Cleveland, LOL!!!

  • I love you,Tony R. I love you, Jack K. oxox

  • nice print 5 stars

  • Is my memory playing tricks on me? I seem to recall the 'never assume' episode as one where Felix defends Oscar against a parking offence. The police officer states that as records showed the car parked illegally belonged to Oscar, he 'assumed' that he'd parked the car where it shouldn't be. Felix did the same chalkboard thing, thus belittling the officer's evidence.

If I'm thinking of some other show using that famous - and brilliant - 'assume' gag, please enlighten me.

  • only once, it's the one and only alleged ticket scalping show...

  • "And how HARD did you try?"

    "I tried verrrry harrrd."

"And how many girls did you call?"

    "SEVEN, SEVEN!!!"

    Reproter: "LEAD STORY!"

    Hilarious.

  • yes, yes, hilarious. but thats not in this scene. where can i see that? plesae help

  • I use the 'assume' thing with my foreign students when they don't follow instructions because they 'assumed' that I didn't mean what I said. To them, it's NEW and I look as witty as Felix was here.

  • not only was tony randell a comic genius. he was also a real genius with alot of other things.

  • could you talk faster or smaller

  • Love Felix's "assume" lesson. Thx!

  • Ass out of U & Me Sence

  • The finest comedy show ever. Thank you.

  • the best

  • the women is very beautiful

  • One of my favorite scenes-"When you assume you make an ass of u and me" haha!!! I love it... :D

  • "Why Detroit?"

"We're sick of Cleveland." HAHAHAHA!!!! Hilarious.

  • Was this the first time that the expression was used?!????

  • That's where this phrase came from.

  • My Favorite Show!

  • where's the rest of the scene where Felix calls Oscar to the stand and humiliates him(or is that a different courtroom episode?)

  • an absolute genius of comedy, the great tony randal!!!!!!!!

  • Why Detroit? We're sick of Cleveland. :)

  • maybe my favorite episode, with the possible exception of "Fear of Flying"

  • i much fear that there is trouble with the fusilage, frederick...ha ha!!
