Only thing I use acrylics for is underpaintings for oils...even with retarders they simply dry too fast and ruin brushes (regardless of how quickly and thoroughly I clean them).

the good thing about painting is that you can usually keep working it til you find a place where you are happy with it.

one thing to realise is u cant paint water or the sky you can only paint paint, so if u look at the water in terms of an overall colour and value, paint that then say ok theres a sharp edge or theres a soft edge, think shade, light and experiment. in all cases regardless of subject matter you paint COLOUR, VALUE, EDGES, AND PAINT QUALITY, (thick or thin paint) use some thick paint where the light hits the water....get some shapes, try to realise wat u want to paint and just do it! hope it helps
