  • Glee DID bring my here since Chris Colfer did an amazing job! i had to see what the song sounded like, which is when I stumbled upon Ethel Merman, Patti, Bernadette, Angela Landsbury and others who made this song and musical so amazing!

  • Saw her do this. Best musical theater performance I've seen in a lifetime of theatergoing. Perfect voice, style, and manner for this part, in my view.

  • I don't like her rose. Too aggressive... too loud.. drowning out the main character =o. Too much flat notes... =[

  • Also, why is Liza not in the running right now... Wowie. Her 81' performance is amazing.

  • Ehhh... I dont know. The tamber of patti's voice just feels better in this role for me than Bernadette. I love them both, but patti has a forcefulness that punches this song in the fucking gut.

  • Okay, I admit, Ms LuPone is (in her own right) a brilliant musical theatre singer but she just doesn't do it for me in this role (or any for that matter)

I find that no matter what she is in it's almost like "The Patti LuPone Show featuring songs from Gypsy" ... I just can't feel the character.

Bernadette Peters plays Rose so well... she sings perfectly AND acts; that is why. At singing, both Ms LuPone and Ms Peters are amazing, but Bernadette can act, she becomes Rose that is the difference.

  • @demolitionlover1678 What the hell is wrong with you? You come and see the version with Patti LuPone to say that? Go watch videos with Kurt's version so you can be a fanboy. Really, you are an ass. And by the way, I like Glee too, but I know something called RESPECT.

  • I prefer Peters, LuPone annoys me too much. I recognise that LuPone is the perfect at the annoying show mother style character but I just can't stand her for a long amount of time..

  • Kurt was BETTER!!!! Fuck u!!!

  • @jimthewriter what about Peters?

    She's a genuis

  • How can anyone not love Patti LuPone? I really love gypsy and I would have loved to see it with Mrs. LuPone!!!

I was sooooooo excited when Glee did a cover of this (and finally not Rachel! XD)

I'm glad that people who didn't know about this have finally had the opportunity to look it up. Let's face it, it doesn't matter who brought you here. It's just swell that you came at all!

  • @KiraIsLove I love his version, but both Patti Lupone and Bette Midler sing it amazingly, and better

  • @KiraIsLove not in a million years Kurts version was very good but nothing except maybe Bernadette Peter's version can beat this.

  • The best Mama Rose to me...she fits so perfectly in the role. And Mama Rose is THE role.

  • Patti LuPone is very special to me in her singing:

It's very hard to listen to her at first, because your first impression is that she screams to much and sings to little (in fact, her singing ruined my 2 pairs of headphones), and that sometimes you can't understand the lyrics.

But after you listen to her a few more times, you then realize she is THE BEST, and that the fact that she screams more than she sings just gives this special feeling that only SHE can give.

    Long live Madame Rose!!

  • I have heard this song sung by 4 different artists and Kurt.

To me, they're all really well done.

  • Although Glee brought me here, I am such a huge fan of this. Both are so fabulous and fierce. :)

  • I love Glee AND Patti

    Music>Silence

  • kurt sings it way better in my opinion ..

I can't stand her voice .. it sounds annoying ...

  • ...powerful

  • I find it amusing how, all the while growing up me liking this kind of music made me a weirdo. I would have killed to have Glee instead of Dawson's Creek, to be able to express it more openly and talk about it with other kids... But now Glee brings in younger kids into this (with all that it means to have young kids around) and all of the sudden that's a bad thing?

  • hahaha....when are all of you going to understand that you will never agree. It's funny to see all the "Bernadette is better.......LuPone is excellent/shit/indifferent". All the actresses to played Rose have their own style and strengths and weaknesses. It's what the actress interprets the part, which is unlike the last person who played the part. Just chill.....God :P

  • @murbuzz Good point....every single Rose brought a new element to the character that wasn't seen in previous Roses...Bernadette brought the more emotional change and made you feel sorry for her. Patti seemed to have more of a mental breakdown, which also works. Midler brought more comedy to the role than others, etc. with Lansbury and Daly

  • This is messed up. I don't like her.

  • CAN PEOPLE PLEASE SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT GLEE.... MUSICAL THEATRE HAS BEEN AROUND FOR WAY LONGER THAN THIS ASS CLOWN TELEVISION PROGRAM...

  • omg im almost cryin this song is so beautiful!

  • I am so lucky to have seen her on broadway......i absolutely loved her she is just amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm sorry I know you love Patti and all and I do too, don't get me wrong, there's just some points in the song where she's losing her freakin' mind...

  • @KellyBevel Yeah, Bernadette is definitely better...

  • @KellyBevel Rofl ^-^ Bernadette? Lmao. Bernadette is terrible she sounds like she got mouth raped

  • @MagicPanties1 LOL I know.

  • @MagicPanties1 i dont think getting your mouth raped would effect your singing voice at all but okay...

  • @Puppies140 ...well, she's supposed to be. At this point in the show, Rose is basically having a nervous breakdown.

  • @Puppies140 Thats the point! The character is losing her shit at this point, I think Pattie hits it on the head.

  • Comment removed

  • Ya'll are haters. This is absolutely beautiful and passionate! I can just see the emotions... torwards the end a tad bit dramatic, but I think its definately appropriate.

  • @dancheyne wow u seriously have a way of over reacting!

  • @TheCoryChannel

    Uh-oh... moron alert.

  • @dancheyne ya just what i expect to hear from a loser like u.lame

  • @TheCoryChannel

Please make no further attempt to exchange word-things with me before engaging brain-stuff first. Thanks, gurl. Kisseh kisseh.

  • absolutely love this song <3

  • I about died from joy seeing that Patti has sung this song. Thank you Glee for steering me to this! :D

  • I love her voice. It's so strong and it clearly shows the pain and distress of the character she's playing.

  • @dancheyne

Bit of an overreaction don't you think?

Asking people to be respectful is hardly an equivalent to Hitler.

  • @undeadpink99

An overstatement, perhaps, but not an overreaction since I barely reacted at all. Of course, I wasn't being entirely serious anyway. And "Asking people to be respectful," doesn't nearly resemble "If you don't like it, then don't comment." There's nothing even implicitly polite about that; just an imperative and an expression of absolutism. LIKE MY VIDEO OR FUCK OFF AND DIE would have been more fun.

  • I looked this up after Glee, whether you love it or hate it its definately getting people interested in the arts <3

  • Like it, but, merman is better :/

  • she's a legend. i adore this woman.

  • Rate it even if you hate it! Comment, too! They can block ya, but you've still got opinions, and I value opinions and I can't stand Patti LuPone. But this isn't bad. It's okay. Just not shimmering.

  • @HighKingTurgon i dont think shes very nice as a person but i mean she can talk the talk and walk the walk so who are we to say shes bad.

  • @silenthillmaster755 I find her tone grating and I don't think she can find the pitch with two hands and a flashlight. Her acting usually fails to impress me, so on the whole her success confuses me. Add to that her toxic divaesque personality and you've got a gal I really dislike. Love to hate, you might say.

  • whats this song about? ive never seen gypsy.

  • @squeegeebeckenhiem

    She doesn't even go here!

    *hides behind hoody and sunglasses*

  • woo hoo she's awesome:)

  • The issue with art of any sort is when people critique a piece, they compare it to other pieces. They assume that the pieces are similar enough that they belong in the same category. That would be like saying that a copper sculpture is comparable to the statue of liberty. Obviously liberty is a superior piece, but that mindset means none of us can appreciate any sort copper sculptures anymore. When one judges a pieces, they should judge that piece by itself.

  • @MichaelDreamwalker *sort of

  • I.love.her. And that's hard to say considering I love Bette.

  • fierce fierce fierce

  • she was kinda awesome :D i liked her :P

  • i looked this version up to see if glee did a good job & i think they did. I like this version alot too cause of the emotion that you can hear in her voice but same for glee. i just love the song =]

  • Wow! I searched up this song because I heard it on Glee.

I really like this song alot!! It's so great! I'm in LOVE with anything broadway, and Patti LuPone's voice is so powerful and amazing. Truly speechless.

  • Finally a role that she's good in! She totally LuPwned this role! :D

  • this is my FAV part in my skating solo

    i skate to overture.

  • This song is about to get A LOT of Glee fans... :P

  • @crazyrandom3 It has already started >:3

  • @crazyrandom3 That's how I found it! I love it soooo much! Haha

  • @crazyrandom3 I am a glee fan. But, this is clearly the better version :) Sorry kurt...

  • @Turquoise416 100% agreed. Can't beat the classics. :P

  • comparing lupone, midler, peters, and merman isn't really fair, cause they're completely different actresses. and they have different ways of playing the character as they please and sing it as they please. i too have my personal opinions, but that doesn't interfere with my respect for the differences between their take on mama rose. just take it for what it is and deal with it. patti lupone is fabulous. and if you don't think so...why are you watching?

  • wow. even just listening to this performance, i feel that hollow emptyness rose has inside her. she truly is a complex and sad character.

  • She is so incredible! You can hear every little bit of emotion in her voice! She creates such a visual... so intense!

  • I can totally imagine Kurt Hummel singing this [from Glee]

I really really really really can't wait!

I love Patti LuPone's power in this song, along with the amount of the emotion she portrays, blows me away every time.

  • @Dirinis IT WILL BE EPIC. :DD

  • @Dirinis OH NO! Don't reply to cake34, reply to me! XD (I forgot to switch accounts)

  • I don' think many of the people actually listening to this audio understand Rose as a character. This is ROSE'S Turn. The shouting and yelling is part of her breakdown. This is the part of Rose as a character in which no one really sees until now. And I'm saying this from experience because my school has been doing this show for 2 weeks now and I'm in the pit. Her voice is strong and demanding like it's supposed to be. With all due respect, don't diss her.

  • she was amazing live. i can see how ppl would think this sounds over-the-top. i bet this was the cast recording because it doesn't sound like an authentic taping of a live performance.

  • Yes....she sucks. There, I said it. She is not a good Momma Rose. She won the Tony as a consolation prize because she has merely been around long enough. Like she said, it took her 28 years to win her second Tony. She only got to play Rose because Laurents mounted a revenge production of Gypsy to piss off Sam Mendes. They FIRST asked Bette Midler to do City Center, but she turned it down. Patti was hardly busy so they called her up. Laurents has said in private that he hates Patti. He used her.

  • how did she keep her voice doing this every night for so many weeks?!

  • Miss Lapone is right there with Miss Russell and Miss Midler, wich I HAVE THE PLEASURE TO WATCH ( sorry Miss Peters), and Miss Lapone´s voice tell me were she was in the preformance, Just Great!!!

  • sorry, but bordering on the OFFENSIVE.

  • Whenever I hear this song I always want to stop at "Some people got it and make it pay" and start shouting STOP TAKING PICTURES!

  • is this from the cast recording?

  • Comment removed

  • lupone has an incredible voice, shes amazing

  • LaPone is the best Madame Rose since Merman. But Lansbury and Midler were great as well. I won't comment on the other ladies. No one else measures up to this performance.

  • @jimthewriter Ethel Merman's voice is so scratchy and wierd i dont like it...

  • She does well, but i personally prefer Bernadette Peters version. LuPone is great, it's just personal preference.

  • But they're probably morons. It's silly for an intelligent person to allow nonsense to get to them. Not that I have any evidence that you're intelligent. Och, I don't really care about this thing in particular; I just read the "If you can't say anything nice, say nothing at all" bollocks and flinched. People who say the kind of things you don't like make themselves look stupid all on their own. DON'T DENY THEM THAT RIGHT :)

  • I just got back from seeing her performance, and I simply can't believe it. Her portrayal of Rose is the best piece of acting I've ever had the privilege to see on Broadway. Stunning!

  • wow. we got six tickets for like $600 but we were pretty far back in the theater. It's an amazing show.

  • oh my god ive never heard this song like this before best ever oh my god why cant i see here this is AMAZING daldjoejroeajldks wowowowowoow!!!!

  • I can't stop listening to this. I really wish I had themoney to go see this show. =(

  • i saw the show in id say the third row of mezzanine on the left side and to tell you the truth i thought where i was was better than the premium tickets. My tickets cost 100 a pop (three tickets came to 302)

  • She will NOT be touring in GYPSY, either. As stated earlier, she has a slew of concerts scheduled throughout the Spring and Summer, including week-long engagements in some cities, with Mandy Patinkin. If there is a London run, it would be no earlier than Fall 2009.

  • She will NOT be extending her GYPSY run. Her final performance is scheduled for Saturday evening, February 28th, 2009--NOT March 3rd. She has a total of 13 concerts scheduled in March 2009, several with Mandy Patinkin. Trust me, this is the definitive information.

  • Saw Gypsy on May 14th. Best production I've seen in years. The whole cast is great and if Patti is leaving in March, I'm going to see her again!!! She, Laura and Boyd are the best.

  • I just got it. When she says you either have or you've had it, she means that you had it like youre angry and done with it. Sondheim is a genius like that. I love what Patti did with this song. She's soo amazing.

  • oh my goodness i just saw her today...she is absolutely phenomenal in this role!!!

  • you saw it a day ago so did I :D i had seat balcony seats 3 row in the front where did you sit?

  • center mezz third row :)

  • cool LOL XD

  • Saw her on Broadway and seriously... she IS Mamma Rose! She was just amazing!!

  • just saw her tonight on Broadway in this role and she was INCREDIBLE. Patti LuPone IS Broadway!

  • if you go, please sit front row. it's like you are IN the story. on stage with Patti. Saw her two nights in a row. AMAZING.

  • love it. love her. cant wait 4 the cd! I LoVE U PATTI!

  • I know its kinda far from now but is anyone planning on going to closing night??

  • do you when closing night is? And what day does the soundtrack get released? I know it's this month.

  • its supposed to be March 3rd of next year.

buuut i heard ticket sales werent going so well so idk.

the CD comes out August 26th.

  • I heard just the opposite. I heard ticket sales were going great and that they were even thinking about continuing the run past March.

  • i dont think Patti would go for making the run any longer.

its an exhausting role and she is literally counting down the days until March 3rd.

(if youve seen her wall in the dressing room with the hash marks.)

    "3-3-09: Sprung!"

  • I dunno. She may not make extend the Broadway run, but I heard she's giving serious thought to taking the show on tour. I think this is Patti's swan song to a certain extent. I mean, she's getting older and there are not many roles written for a singer of her age. Plus, she's played the greatest role in musical theater, and done so to rave reviews - in a way there's not really anything else for her to do, no where else for her to go but retirement.

  • um ok...

    where did you hear that?...

well, the only thing i've heard is that she was serioulsy considering bringing the show to London.

  • What better way to end an incredible career than having won the Tony for reviving Rose and taking Gypsy on the road!

  • Due to Patti's concert engagements (she currently has 12 concerts set for March 2009 alone), there is no chance of an extension of Patti's contract in GYPSY on Broadway. Full-price ticket sales are not bad, but the show is depending heavily on two-fers, and the extended Playbill discount offer, which features $117 Orchestra seats for $75. especially on weeknights. I am just glad the theatre is filling up and people are having a chance to see her amazing performance.

  • I hope I was clear...the Playbill offer is for during the week only, not weekend performances.

  • Well I payed $260 on a Saturday night for seats in the third, well technically fourth, row just off center. And the house was packed, including the other premium seats around me. I'll go see the show a few more times, probably in the premium seats one more time.

  • Just to be clear, each seat was $260 and I bought 2 of them.

  • I will be there closing night. I've never been more in love with a show.

  • omg i love her i'm going 2 see her on broadway on the 20th :)

  • get ready for the most incredible experience of your life!!! she is mind blowing as mama!!! have fun!!

  • i am going on the 20th also! :)

i just saw it on the 6th and patti is soooooo amazing!!!

  • She is shear brilliance.

  • she cant help it if shes ahmahzing

    she was born that way

and it screams "give me a tony" cuz she desreved it and is flippin awesome

so :p stick that in ur juice box and drink it suckahhhh

  • I agree with you...you can hear it in the way she speaks just before she goes into "Everything's Coming Up Roses" at the Tony Awards.

  • She really sounds crazy here. LOVE IT!

  • How come i got a minus? I complimented the performance saying she was just enough patti here... and my opinion even if you didt like it wasnt told very rudeley.

  • Comment removed

  • I think patti's only real problem is that on occasion she lets patti get in the way of the character (that happened at City Center) here though i think she delivers it with just enough patti and the perfrect ammount of Rose

  • Comment removed

  • Ummm... I don't agree with you.

But She IS an amazing Rose.

  • "lousy actors try to "become" some charactor. great actors play themselves."

...are you SERIOUS?! The whole point of acting is to completely put yourself behind the character and become them, not to play yourself (unless your character is yourself). i've heard a lot of ignorant remarks about acting before, but this really takes the cake...

  • where is this from?

  • I'ts from Gypsy.
