  • This isn't BBHC with Janis Joplin any more than The Beatles were "with Paul McCartney". Janis, as good as she was, was a MEMBER of this great band.

  • JANIS JOPLIN ROCKS FOREVER.....INFINITY

  • JANIS was great, but Big Brother and the Holding Company was GREAT ALSO.SO if ya'll are still alive I wish to RECOGNIZE YOUR COTRIBUTION AS WELL.JANIS would have a harder time without BIG BROTHER.With booze you lose, and DOPE no hope.I lived during the times, and am happy I am 59.RIP JANIS,you could have lived to be 59 years old also.

  • I should know better than to reminisce for eras that I was not around for, especially an era that would have potentially been dangerous for me to exist in...

... but damnit, why wasn't I part of that "now" generation? Why couldn't I be 19 years in 1967, wondering around Haight Ashbury with my hippie friends? Why couldn't I be anticipating what would turn out to be the most important and historical music festivals ever?

  • @IAmPlaysWithSquirrel I often wonder about that myself

  • JANis JOPLinfinte sound

    Divine Creatrix and Destructress.

    Janis: Sonic Goddess

    Janis Lives; Janis IS!

  • owsley tic tacs

  • Jimi Hendrix could not have been ingesting tic tacs in 1967 because tic tacs didnt hit the market until 1969.

  • @maryquant1967 did you seriously look that up? haha

  • RIP James Gurley.

  • RIP James

  • Thanks for your screaming guitar James Gurley. Heaven is Jamming this Christmas. Your sound and style will live on for future guitarists forever. You were the inventor of Psychedelia and won't soon be forgotten.

  • whhhhhyyy waaasss ii borrrnn in the 80s????????

  • Best female singer ever.

  • Aretha Franklin may disagree...

  • lol sorry for having my own opinion.

  • @ParaffinLampherman, yeah, and Etta James, who Janis was deifinitly influenced by (I'm sure she say so) should say "one of the best"

  • @ParaffinLampherman lol ....

  • "a nowness as it takes place ... today we are seeing it" Took me a second to wrap my mind around that. Still a stupid word... nowness. Is it really a word?

I dont like this version.. I think the album version is better.. Great song tho. Wish this bullshit music we have now would go away.

  • janis te amo...

  • This my ALL-TIME favorite song by Big Brother!

    So powerful!

  • wowo they tore the tent down

  • i WAS THERE WOWOW THERE THINK WOWO HOW DID I LIVE THAT

  • janis had so much feeling inside...she was a beautiful troubled soul and was taken from this world way before her time... she was laughed out of school her town and it hurt so bad she sang the blues... janis you are the beat...

  • When I was very young, my brother brought home this album called "Cheap Thrills." What was this crazy shit, just look at the cover R. Crumb.

Yeah, I love Janis, and they didn't really last that long, but you know, I think she sounded best in that band.

Hell, Gurley and Andrews are the most underrated guitar duo ever!

I listen to that stuff today and still makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck.

  • at 6:01 - "jimi hendrix was like taking acid, man...I thought it was tic-tacs, he was taking so many...of these white things in his mouth..." LOL!

see...rock stars were on serious drugs in the 60s/70s...these days rock stars go to rehab for being addicted to coffee or something.

  • That's bullshit. In order to be successful, you have to have a shit-load of talent and even more luck. It's a shame that you're friend didn't get the credit she probably deserved, but if she had been invited to play at Monterey, it would have been her in this documentary, not Janis. Don't get me wrong, Joplin is an incredible performer. She's famous because she had the right talent for the right place in time, not because she did heroin.

  • Your right. Just look at the President. You have to have something to be a drunken bum and yet be President of the USA. You can't apply for a job and be a drunk, but you can be President or a big hero.

  • Nah, it still would have been Janis

  • Did YOU ever seen Janis Joplin drunk? She was in Woodstock for just acouple of hours, did her song and a song with Bobby Darin and left. Woodstock was not her scene nor Bobbys. She always left, came and left. However, reporters sale newspapers not truths right?

  • Her drug habit was to sooth the pain. She had no friends in a small ytexas town and couldn't wait to get out.

Her heart was drop kicked across a thousand blazing deserts by male and female lovers.

With no one to count on, booze and dope were ehr only friends.

She wasn't sucessful because she had a drug habit. She had a drug habit because she was sucessful.

Sometimes it's the only way forward. Been there done that so I know. As Americans it is our fate.

  • Janis NEVER did parties. Anyone that knew her heard the same story from Janis' lips to their ears..."DON'T GO TO THE PARTIES." She was a loner. Janis was big but Janis didn't want to be Janis. She preferred Elvis.

  • What? Janis loved parties. That's where she got hopped up and loaded with junk. There are loads of pictures of her at parties. She was never straight. Always down on smack and booze.

  • Janis was amazing and she pulled of Kozmic Blues very well and kicked ass on Pearl. But come on people, you have to admit...she sounded raw and real and incredible with BBHC.

  • i think the way sam and janis trade off lead vocals is kick ass very powerful. i wish they would have done some more songs with sam and janis trading off vocals!!

  • Janis Joplin & Big Brother And The Holding Company ROCKS !!!!!

  • VEry good!!!!!!! estupendo!! muito bom!!!

  • Just to clarify my comment below--don't mistake me, I loved Janis. But the best album she did was Cheap Thrills, not Cosmic Blues, not Pearl. She needed them and they needed her. Likewise, neither Lennon nor McCartney were as great once they killed the Golden Goose.

  • the vercool thing about this paticular janis video comments n response page is the crater of time that people scurry forth in cuz each

comment vs response here are legs of a journey apart from another. monther language.

  • webster...now THAT was a cool show. i love

    that lil black boy.

  • anyway...it's all fun n games till somebody loses a third eye. styx and the rolling stones may break your bones but names will never hurt me. Tommy, can you hear me?

    TOMMY can you HEAARRRR me!...

  • Everyone has a right to there own opinion, but to talk trash about the dead is very childish. I personally Love her voice. Her songs have real emotion. I have never been a big fan of artist who just sing with there pretty voices but never show any emotion, sometimes you have to just let your hair down. I am also a big fan of Stevie Nicks as well, I think that Janis would have loved her.

  • I want to direct this to the people who don't know what the hell they're talking about. Do you know that you all would still be listening to "Bubble Pop" if it wasn't for people like Janis? She knew what she wanted and she didn't let any one stand in her way! Janis, Garcia and three others started the counter culture revolution in San Fran. I love all them all! Grow up! Or Don't Listen!

  • this "monterey pop" movie is'nt the same as the dvd produced by lou adler "the complete monterey pop festival", is it?

  • It is, though the new one contains outtake performances, more Jimi and Otis Redding, and commentary that wasn't in the original.

  • what does the guy at the end exactly say, i can't understand him...

  • That's Dave Getz, the drummer. He's saying how excited the band was to be in this big movie-- Monterey Pop-- but when they went to the premiere "it was just Janis. The band wasn't in the movie."

  • @octogon7 Yes, they felt they got shafted.

  • Recently met Sam Andrew of BBHC. What a pompous JERK.

  • what song were they performing?

  • "Combination of the Two"

  • Thanks for this!

  • fuck every1 who puts down janis she was the shit and always will be the shit. no one has a voice or lyrics like hers!

  • I like her. But that's ridiculous to suggest that no one has a voice or writes like her. Shes just a person.

  • well do u know any1 who does have a voice or lyrics like hers?

  • Wow, I would burn you for that comment, but you kind of did that yourself by writing like a moron. You obviously just don't understand what good music is, so just don't click on this videos. It's not rocket science.

  • i wrote like a moron huh... well, this is what you wrote, "so just dont click on this videos." that doesn't make any sense. and i like big brother and the holding company. but i hate the absolutely undeserved fame that janis herself has. she sucks.

  • why is it "undeserved"? explain yourself.

  • its undeserved because she gets all the credit for songs that arn't hers. those songs were by a band, and that fact has dissapeared over the years. all people know is janis joplin. and that is incorrect and inconsiderate to the other awesome people in that band. but no one cares. because people suck.

  • what kind of fuckin' music do you like? you got no soul? annoying voices? jeeze. get with it man.

  • i like the animals, especially the albums animalizim, and animalization, Jefferson airplane, up to after bathing at baxters, things go south during and after that one. (thanks to grace slick mostly) Black sabbath up to album 4 mainly. alot of other stuff from this time. alot of OLD 20's and 30's style blues, i like some OLD and REAL jazz. alot of REAL, EARLY thrash metal, and early death metal.

  • You have absolutely no conception of soulful musicianship. Listen to "Ball and Chain," at least. If you can't appreciate that, then go back to listening to your packaged Britney Spears, and stay in your narrow-minded bubble of flat affect and predictable delivery.

  • i have rocked out to ball and chain many times man. look at the stuff i wrote that i listen to. i like big brother. not this janis solo style. there is way better music out there to listen to then led zepplin. there are lots of good types of music that have soulful convention bending ways about them. and they don't have to have annoying homo erotic style singing like led zepplin. don't misinterpret my words man.

  • nothing bad about led zeppelin

  • well said. I agree with you.

  • Dude, if you had just been around her 15 mins. or so, you wouldn't be pouring hate out of the computer, the lady had a presence to her you had to know. And very generous as well.

  • well said :)

  • i love ball and chain man, and have been listing to it for many years. the britney spears stuff is a weird reference, but, ehh, kind of amusing that you think i would listen to commercials like that...

  • you obviously do not know much about janis joplin

  • Wow You Just Don't Understand The Blues Do Ya Tommy?

Janis Was The Shit (Something Your Obviously Full Of)

    Your A Dumbass

  • If you can't appreciate Robert Plant then you have no conception of what original music is. You will never be a creative musician if you can't understand the difference between a predictable melody-line and a soulful line that defies convention. Their brilliance isn't necessarily about their raspy delivery, it's also about note-choice. If you can just pick up a guitar and map out the notes that these vocalists are using you can see their creativity.

  • THANKYOU, someone who finally understands music. Robert Plant is a cousin of mine along with a couple of more famous artist. I think the problem is some people only listen to music instead of feeling the music. I think people who talk trash about certain artist are jealous. There are artist I do not care for, but I do not make a point to let everyone know that I do not like them, I just don't listen to them.

  • I moved to Shropshire and hear rumours of Robert living nearby. Any truth ?

  • Sam Andrews thinks Jimi hendryx is taking tic-tacs..? they didnt even have tic-tacs back then...and Peter Albin has the all time worst singing voice ever hes such a fucking cock

  • What makes you so hip that you can put down Janis? How many records did you sell and concerts did YOU do? Try not to be so hip.

  • Janis was and always will be known as GREAT!

That's because she could rock the house...and still her voice and passion are a big influence in music

  • all you fuckers that put down on janis are stupid! big brother would have been nothing without her! she was not mean she just didn't take people's shit!

  • Not true. The fact is that Janis did not know how to ROCK before Big Brother taught her. That is just a fact. Before the band took her in, she was a rather mediocre folksinger. When she took the bad advice to leave the group and become the second Billy Holiday, she cut off her roots. And everyone knows the rest of the story.

  • yeah... it was all about Janis... ya THINK???

Their studio stuff sounded good, but like a lot of bands back then, like CSN&Y at Woodstock, they sounded horrible live...

  • Stupid comment by a stupid human being. Janis did not suck. She literally saves this band from falling into total disharmony since none of the vocalists could hear each other since they hadn't invented stage monitors yet that allowed musicians to hear themselves on stage. Janis was beautiful and made this a great set.

  • i'll agree that i'm stupid. but she is a heroin drenched self loathing monster. and her voice is scratchy and she sounds like she would be a mean person. thats just what her voice comes off as.

  • Well stupid, it is easy to put down the dead! She was not mean and she effected you that way she was doing her job. You must think Neal Young and Bob Dylan suck to? That is style man and you will never see the likes of her again! Get you head out of your ass and enjoy her style man--period. Texas blues

  • i think some very early bob dylan i've heard rocks, and neal young is cool as shit. but that stupid bitch, sucks. especially when you grow up just hearing her on the radio singing about deppressing things in a deppressing way, especially since she was a drug addict, which was her fault. The main problem is that the majority of people that know her name, and the songs they play on the radio, don't even know that this band exists.

  • ... i have done alot of research on janis joplin and i know for a fact that she was very lonely and searching for love. and because she wasnt getting it in the way she needed, she became depressed and therefore the music she played was a reflection of that. im not going to be immature and call you names and swear at you- but have a heart man. dont diss her, just feel for her. it just goes to show that publicity and fame doesnt mean anything if you are lonely.

    dios te bendiga janis

  • she was a poet in the true sense of the word huh?

  • and thats a horrible thing right there. like the doors and the jimi hendrix experience. they just know the singer, and thats fucking lame. plus, she sold the rest of the band out, according to this video we're commenting on. she's a real scummy scum bag.

  • It's called the blues

  • agreed, I can't understand why people keep putting down great musicians... Don't put somebody down unless you can do it better yourself.

  • you are a fucking moron

  • that was directed to the person that said janis sucked btw

  • They were SO out of tune on this song! But, Janis comes through and saves the set. Ball and Chain in Monterey Pop is still as dramatic and real as it gets!

  • I agree that Janis should have kept BB. She should have went with what got her there. Dance with the one that brought you!

  • Kind of strange, that they were SO resistant to being in the movie, but then they were disappointed that they weren't? Maybe they had a little remorse?

Kind of like the Mc5. They were soooo into going against the grain, that they did things that screwed them out of the fame they deserved, like getting dumped by Elecktra Records.

  • Ive heard a lot of Big Brothers live music, and to me they are still lousy. Their guitars are usually out of tune, and the back up vocals are horrid.

  • octogon, I still think it was a reality check for Big Brother. The recording of Cheap Thrills was horrendous because the producer demanded perfection and Big Brother could barely play in tune. In the film people raved about Janis, they didn't rave that Big Brother was fantastic. They wanted Janis. Nowadays, backing bands aren't even mentioned anywhere unless they have a fling with the singer. Even though they were cut, in the end, Big Brother still received international fame.

  • True. BB were punk rock 10 years too early.

  • I was at the Fillmore several time to see bb & Janis. Big Bro could play very well. It's a Beautiful Day, on the other hand...

  • I agree with both of you. I'm trying to point out that Janis always wanted to be famous, people were going to listen to her. I had always sensed that a few members of BB were still sour after Janis left. I think Dave Getz was holding onto the false hope that BB was actually more talented musically than what others thought. In Ball and Chain, the band did get cuts as well.

  • Janis would've done better if she kept them. Kids like rock. Her next band was too 'legit'. Same for Paul Butterfield ditching the guitar format for a horn section. The Dead's success proves my point: Leave with the guy that brought you to the dance.

  • Wow, that one guy with the short hair and facial hair (not Sam) is one sour grape. Yes, the film was about Janis because many claimed that Janis was the talent of that bad, why would they give Big Brother a pity spotlight? Even Sam Andrew admitted Janis was the talent in that band. It seems that guy is a very stupid man for not wanting to be in the movie, it can blow their national exposure wide open and earn them huge bucks.

  • That's Dave Getz, the drummer. He's far from stupid, just honest. If you look at his demeanor you won't see any bitterness. He's just describing how Big Brother felt when they went to the premiere with their family & friends and found they had been cut out of the movie. That was an artistic decision of Pennebaker's, and clearly the sustained CU of Janis singing Ball and Chain is one of the more powerful moments in the film. Still, I think it was a bit of a blow to the band members.

  • As to not wanting to be in the movie in the first place, many of the other San Francisco bands felt the same way and mistrusted the motives behind the whole enterprise. Overall, if you watch "Nine Hundred Nights" in its entirety you will see that all the members of Big Brother felt that Janis was an enormous talent and that they were very fortunate to have her in the band, but they are human and as such have mixed feelings about being first overshadowed then cast aside as Janis skyrocketed.

  • You guys must be kids. The whole thing in those days was to avoid politics, jealousy and all the other asinine traits you're trying to put on Janis and her band mates. There was no intent to indict anyone. Look deeper or their legacy is lost.

  • Echo that, brother.

  • Instant evolution, given much lip service, maybe even a sincere try, but people don't change across the board just because it's the percieved trend. Those are asinine traits , agreed, and, human.

  • Damn I'm getting old..that all seems like just yesterday
