Those are possibly the most chilling words i have ever heard. As someone on the outside looking in, i don't agree with the lieutenant. But one thing i do know, i don't think i will ever understand what goes through a soldier's mind once that first bullet flies past his head.
My favorite Speirs scene (and B.O.B scene) is when he runs through the German line to hook up with I company when they were stranded...and then runs back. But this is def my second favorite scene. Speirs is the fucking man, and there's no other way to say it.
i love the man. flipping pragmatist. i never signed up because of the exact things he said there. you are already dead as a soldier. fuck that. i respect what they do but professional soldiers have poor health and safety. by the way 'cleatus from fucksville usa', i work in the health service and see death everyday. i chose to help, not destroy. if they need me they can ask. lots of love, Bruce Wayne.
@noligsky Working on an essay about Speirs speech. I have never been in military and am curious about how authentic real soldiers find Speirs' philosophy. Any further thougts would help.
@dtouey i think i am too late to help, but there is interesting philosophical insights from a book about the Russian Front. " The Forgotten Soldier" by Guyfrieter Saier. Fascinating, and horrifying, the closest a book has come to describe the horror and evil of war.

Well seems like WW III is just around the corner. Might be a good idea to remember this in case I or any one of you men out there reading this comment get drafted. Just remember YOU are already dead.
Sure being Fearless helps Yourself but it doesnt help anyone else. Going out there trying to be a hero dont win the war unless you're as lucky as Speirs. A soldier is taught how to conquer his fear and use it to fight.
i agree. best scene. and ive watched the "dekalogy" so many times i can recite every line down to the words. i love this and everything about easy company
@hunter402406 you might wanna watch the series again i own it and watch ever day at the end of this episode he gets hit in the neck by a sniper, never recovered and died in 45. you have the wrong blithe
@hunter402406 because they would make a storyy dedicated to these men in a story told by these men and cut one mans story short and lie about his death lol
@Ghostofgrace92 well, the book and the mini-series are based on the memory of easy company veterans, all of them are around 80 years old, people make mistakes. oh by the way, i found out that albert blithe has a son, he served in 82nd airborne
@hunter402406 theres a book? i'm gonna have to get my hands on it. thats badass, my family except my dad and hids brother were all paratroopers, on my moms side too, i always wanted to keep the tradition alive but i can honestly say i am not tough enough mentally or physically for the military. but if my country called upon me i would with out a second thought answer the call
@Ghostofgrace92 the book is called "Band of Brothers" ,written by Stephen Ambrose, and there is another book called "Beyond Band of Brothers" , it's Major Winters's own memoir
@hunter402406 - Thanks for the info. That's kind of messed up that they did this to him, no? I mean why not just create a fictional character to play this part? If I'm Blithe's family I'm pretty pissed off...
dude its the harsh truth but it is just that the truth. the only way a soldier can perform his or her duties is to except thier dead so they can let go of there fear
@AirAssautl7 This quote actually takes me the opposite direction, toward eternal life. Reminds me of Christ's words that he who tries to save his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for Christ's sake will gain it.
He tells the truth. It's kind of like what Bill Hicks said, "I know you people like to fantasize this eternal life fantasy, but let me be the first to pop that fuckin' bubble and send you hurling back to reality.... You're dead too.... Hahahahaha!!!"
When I was younger I used to wonder how our soldiers could stay sane in war. I couldn't ever imagine how I could keep my head about me with the possibility of death at every turn. But then I saw Band of Brothers and this scene, and it all started making sense to me. When you accept and come to terms with the possibility of death, the fear that clouds your judgement and hinders your actions fades away. I learned so much from this series!
@Ph1l2007 - It's not coming to terms with the 'possibility' of death. It's coming to terms that you are, for all intents and purposes, already dead. Because you never truly recover from war. Sure, you might be lucky to make it out of there alive - physically - but your spirit, your sense of humanity ... is gone.
The look- the change in expression at the end of his speech- from eyes engaging Blythe to an empty- "thousand yard stare" is the finest use of non-verbal acting I have ever seen. It conveys the ability of Speirs to turn off his humanity at a moments notice to execute the mission at all costs- even at the expense of his own soul. In my book, the finest piece of acting dialogue that ever graced the screen.
@adbartels - Thank you for expressing your view of this scene with such eloquence and articulation. I feel the same way although I didn't have the words the way you did ... great job.
most of these guys were so young and had nothing like we have today, so why not give it their all, there wasn't that much to lose. it's a smart line of thought, to be considered dead already and don't think too much
These words help me be the soldier that I am today... there's been times where I get pretty scared and then I say to myself fuck it lets get it over with.... Get errrr done!!!!!
