  • How can a song be interpreted so differently by a same singer? Only time will tell. In 1970 she was a young girl, full of dreams and ideas... 30 years later, she's much older and interpreted this song is like a mother telling her children her own experience...

  • aching

    haunting

    melancholic

    ahh

    mere adjectives

  • I doubt anyone else could have pulled off this Nelson Riddle-esque version of Both Sides Now.

    Joni is a master.

  • The beauty is, there is no words for this.

  • thank you joni

  • A true classic.

  • she sings it like she is telling her life story from 1970 until then

  • Who is on that magical muted horn?

  • @alphillips100 looks like mark isham

  • stunning

  • "So many things I would have done". Astonishing.

  • I still cry after alll these years. Love from Ireland.

  • there is just no way you can be flippant about this song-- it is so deep-- the thing I find amazing is that she wrote it so long ago when she was so much younger--40 years ago?--incredible--so far ahead of her time-- she is a genius who's writing/poetry is matched only by the excellent top quality musicians she always used -- she may not be fully appreciated until decades after she is gone-- but I can say I have cherished her work for for over 35 years-- best wishes JM

  • brilliant... it's one of my bets songs

  • Sounds like she's bein' not that far from being a true goddess. Thank You, Joni!

  • You can tell she's overwhelmed by the meaning of Both Sides Now at the end, when she speaks. Love her so much.

  • Simply Beautiful

  • If this isn't an example of beauty, what is? Life imitating art or vice versa and does it matter?

  • The thing is to see this song played in 1970 and then see its 2000 version. Thats "both sides".

  • All my life... Joni Mitchell

  • where was this performed?

  • it"s sad song,every word has a meaning-beautiful

  • There's so much sadness and honesty and vice versus

  • Nearly 2 million views!! I never knew Joni had so many fans. Good stuff!

  • kerli sent me here :) moonchild

  • One word for this song and performance...BRILLIANT. I think this song is a perfect "10". I just listen to it and shake my head in disbelief as I honestly think this particular work is in a class of its own. Amazing and in our generation this particular song is comparable to a famous work of a classic genius such as Beethoven or Mozart, etc....And her art work, paintings...AMAZING. Joni, I'm sorry it took so long in my life to recognize you for all you encompass.

  • Such a beautiful song. I love the lyrics and meaning in the song.

  • a beautiful song when it was first recorded made even more emotional when sung after a lifetime of experiences

  • Ojalá, alguna vez pudiera componer una canción que tuviera esta sensibilidad. Maravillosamente Perfecta.

  • i cant believe this is live, her voice is immaculate

  • FOR ME THIS IS BEING SUNG WITH EVERY BIT OF HONESTY THERE CAN BE , I FIND MYSELF FROZEN WITH EVERY BIT OF EMOTION THERE CAN BE IN ONES LIFE GOOD BAD HAPPINESS AND DISAPPOINTMENTS, OF ONES SELF OR OF OTHERS , TIMELESS

  • @casserorama - You can find this version on the Love Actually movie soundtrack. The part in the movie where this plays is so perfect with the song.

  • Really, she is the Mozart of our times. We are so bombarded, so inundated, and even the language of our thoughts is intruded upon. Joni gives us a real framework, a simplicity that has depth, and in her later work, a journey into jazz. She is unequaled.

  • @lebarosky I'd even go so far as to say that Joni's music is a journey into the human experience.

  • One of the best performances, ever! I believe every word ... now.

  • Love this woman

  • I've heard version from '67 but this one is much more than better, it's sounds really mature strong women who knows smth about life....

  • 00:35

  • oh please is beautiful

  • God. This song is amazing....for listen just with the heart...

  • This song was made a good 30 years before i was born, but the fact that it is one of my favourites just goes to show that beautiful songs are timeless.Thank you for your music Joni.

  • tan linda ella...

  • For me - this is just a perfect moment in the universe. I come back to this video again and again.. There´s just something about Joni Michell´s voice here that lifts me up to heaven. "The queen of light" Is the words that comes to my mind each time I watch this. This moment, as a matured woman, together with that great orchestra, this song is way beyond anything "normal". Her voice is so unique and deep. Whenever I get lost or confused, this song will do the job and bring me back :) its love!

  • does anyone know if this is from a dvd and which one?

  • Such a rich sound eminating from her voice...her lyrics are coming alive again inside of her again-- moving her in a whole new way. Awesome Joni.

  • thank you yin,,,,,

  • wow thats so beautiful. It pulls at the heart strings every time. I just lost the love of my life and it fits my sadness perfectly.

  • When she sings this now it sounds so much more truer. The maturity in her voice as compared to the 70s is incredible. She is endless. So glad this was done at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics as well. Classic song.

  • In 1970 it sounded like a surprise, now it sounds inevitable.

  • I think this is even better than when she sang it in the 70's

  • simply,, close your eyes and just listen,, and thoughts bring so many tears,

  • Shows us what maturity brings all of us in creating art and just living life. Yeah her voice no longer has the range but her experience of life in lightens the lyric that could not be possible when she was a young woman.

    Just loved it.

  • Life is just a story. She have told it, How about us?

  • Much older and wiser than in 67 when she wrote it, but some things you will just never fully understand i guess. A beautiful moment. Lyrics are so true as well. Maybe it's better to stick to your illusions sometimes. If you care, you Should let them know.

  • if ANY program deserves to be released on DVD (or at least re-broadcast) it's "An All Star Tribute to Joni Mitchell". The show boiled over with emotion. So glad I recorded it. Think I'll go watch it right now.

  • @fanofprotopic thanks for the reminder - I'm going to watch it right now!

  • beautiful song. When I look at her hands I want to cry.

  • Well said Linda. Totally agree with your words.

  • look at her hands, she (also) sings with her hands

  • transmite mucha emocion y mucho amor :-) love this song

  • transmite mucha emocion y mucho amor :-) love this song

  • Joni you are without doubt a truly gifted lady and you share this with the world in a pure and dinamic way...... To hear you sing and to watch you perform this story is nothing but unique, moving and totally awe inspiring it realy is........

  • The soprano voice has gone, but Joni Mitchell sure still knows how to sell a song. Brava!

  • wow her voice has changed. still beautiful.

  • so deep, so true .. timeless

  • A lifes journey lived with clouds

    Poems through others eyes

    Love you Ms Mitchell

Not afraid to say it right out loud

  • Her mature voice has given a second life to this great song. It shows how life can change some youthful illusions into mature and not always pleasant realities. Thus, clouds got in the way......I really don't know clouds at all....

Thank you Joni from a very longtime fan :)

  • You simply cannot eclipse her artistry, and it's expression of our humanity and the human experience. She is transcendent.

  • i love her

  • so relate to this song right now wish had river i could skate away on ! love u joni

  • Absolutely superb, forget Subo & the new album, this is an excellent version of a fabulous song

  • I loves this rendition when it was played at the Winter Olympics, remember the girls who running on the fields and flying?. It was fantastic, not just the graphics, but Joni's song just topped it off, absolutely beautiful Joni, well done

  • @keepercoach i loved that perfomance but it was a guy that was doing the dancing he did a wonderful job it was the first time i heard the song in hits the heart

  • Mesmerising.... :-D x

  • Nice. Better than the one that she did when she was young

  • Happy Birthday Joni. You are a fantastic singer and songwriter. This one is for the ages.

  • does anyone know what concert this is from?

  • @lindaaloha It is from a tribute to her. Many other artists were part of this(bravo,A and E?) special, and each performance was a beautiful tribute. Then she gets up from the audience and delivers this amazing performance.Just beautiful.

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JONI

  • this is the ultimate Joni. she bleeds her reality... thank you Yin for an incredible upload. this is a terrific addition to YouTube that will be listened to 30 years from now.

  • anyone that knows waht concert this lovly song is taken from ?

  • Tomorrow, November the 7th, is Joni Mitchell's 68 birthday. I miss hearing her play music. She has been a wonderment and an inspiration in my life. I am a professional singer, actor, musician and writer. When I started playing the guitar over 40 years ago, she was one of a handful of women musicians, including Janis Ian,who were talented musicians, composers and artists. And who lived their lives REGARDLESS of what the Big Guys thought. Thank you very much Ms. Roberta Joan. Love, Troods

  • Susan Boyle could never top this, fantastic.

  • UN-$#*$ING-BELIEVABLE!!!!!!

  • For an artist to write a song over 40 years ago and be able to present it the way it was meant to be so much later in life is just mind boggling. Love you Joni!

  • I have loved Joni Mitchell for pretty much my entire life. In elementary school, I was hooked on Ladies of the Canyon, A few years later, it was Court and Spark. In college it was Hejira. When I heard Night Ride Home in 1991 I was initially thrown by the ever-deepening voice, but quickly came to appreciate how much more she seemed to convey emotionally. Those who expect her to sound the way she did in the 60's and 70's are missing out. She is a consummate artist, then and now.

  • @nickbigd: I totally agree. A friend gave Joni's music to me when I was 19, I got "Ladies of the Canyon" on LP for my 27th birthday - and now I am 44. That makes 25 years all in all, and I am sure that she will accompany my soul for the next 50 years to come.

    Love, Gisel

  • I think any disappointment people are taking from this is to do with how gentle a soul Joni is, and how difficult a challenge it can prove to be to open oneself up to a humanity that can sometimes appear abrasive. This is the reason behind throat chakra disturbances. I'm learning about that myself, actually.

  • She and David Bowie could do some amazing work together

  • @Geoffrey2410 Have you heard her album Turbulent Indigo? I'm wondering if you just don't like her jazzy approach. At least she's recreating something in a different and experimental way.

  • @Geoffrey2410 You're some piece of work Geoffrey!

  • Makes me cry every time. Life (& love) can be so complicated

  • @1969nightmare I feel that way when I listen to Glen Campbells cover of this gorgeous, gorgeous song :-(

  • @1969nightmare soo true 1

  • Thank you (bow)!!!!!

  • I've always liked her, but her voice here is the best I've ever heard from her. Wonderful.

  • I love you, bien. De Tiersssss nada, yo tampoco.

  • In 1969 I thought I understood this song when I first heard it. Today in 2011 listening to this incredible version with Joni, I am so touched by this song again. I can say now I have lived both sides of cloud watching, loving, and living. The song is universal. The message is universal. THere is always so much more cloud watching, loving and living to experience. How grateful I had this song as part of my journey. Thank you, Joni, from the bottom of my heart.

  • @lindaaloha Yes, I agree - the message in these lyrics is timeless. This was the theme song of my 1969 high school class graduation and I thought I understood then too. Certainly I felt this song deeply then and could relate it to my life, but the depth of the message now is seasoned by so much more experience. The journey is wonder-full and Joni's music is a trusted companion.

  • @lindaaloha - I've listened to this song for 40 years now...each year, each decade, each passing event, this song has meant something different -- something amazing each and every time. I recently moved from Southern California to Seattle a few months ago, friends and family say I'll miss the sun...but I see the clouds with such dimension, layers upon layers of them, with occasional sunlight peaking through. I see the clouds for what they are and appreciate the sun that much more. <3

  • I heard this song again while watching the movie "Life as a House." It rekindled my love for the song...the use of it in that scene in the movie made me take pause. It was magical...Thanks, Joni, for your incredible talent and willingness to share it with us...

  • @lindaaloha Thank you for sharing ..

  • @lindaaloha that gave me goosebumps

  • @lindaaloha One of the best comments ever on YouTube.

  • Beautiful. I absolutely love her voice in this. It's as though she came to understand so much more about the song from her life experiences as she matured. Inspiring.

  • smoking destroys the voice bigtime amongst other things

  • Do not hesitate to listen to the magnificent version of lara fabian for this song

  • My girl! we go way back. I played her CD the other day..I love her all grown up and smooth. Joni is a beautiful storyteller...only it's a true story.

  • Masterpiece.

  • Was it really 40 some odd years ago?...

  • Love the song itself, but wish it were sung by a different singer instead.

  • @RedFoxAce jesus the woman wrote it . i think she should be the one to sing it.

  • 0:00

heres my own maded replay button for you folks, enjoy

  • Joni. You provided the soundtrack to my life. My life would have been different without you. Truly. You showed me how to survive the hard parts. love.

  • This gets really deeply through me!

i don't know joni's music very well but i will get to know it better!

    love

  • Smoking hasn't damaged her voice at all. Its made it richer and more meaningful. I prefer this version to her earlier ones. Her voice reflects a life lived, something a young high voice would struggle to do.

  • @adamps16 me too love this version more than any one she did before..

    It's just soothing..

    Big thanks to you yin58194..

    brucehuntsman@yahoo.com Thanks!

  • Great tribute to a great lady and legend songwriter. Can this performance be purchased on DVD? Anyone?

brucehuntsman@yahoo.com I would like to add to my collection.

    Thanks

  • Thank you Joni...For your emotion an love, ,we need it...

  • Thank you Joni...

  • Wow!!! Yikes!!!

  • just realized after wtching this that robert plant rips off joni mitchell

  • oh no, i think joni is just missing something to strum. still beautiful though :)

  • this is something else. another level of humanity.

  • Life as a House brought me here.... AWESOME movie and soundtrack....

  • I like it better than the original...much better.

  • i have never heard a voice used with such a magnificent interpretation

as this rendition from Joni. transformed from the one i used to love when

i was 17 lo these many many years ago. the violins in the beginning ,

Joni not playing the guitar strums.......singing a cappella with the violins

    ....oh oh.........beautiful.

  • i love joni mitchell so much it hurts

  • made me shiver.......:)

  • The engineering on this mic is awful. I'm a huge Joni fan. He made her sound bad, way to tinny and too mush reverb.

  • I first heard this song when I was 19 (in 2000) and instantly became one of my favorite songs. This song is one of the greatest ever written. I understood it's meaning from that tender age.

  • I agree with everything on here..... All positive ones anyway! Moving, touching and truly fab!

  • Listen to her Travelog album for more reworks like this. STUNNING Joni just Stunning :)

  • @iosnick check out my version...I'd love to know your thoughts

  • absolutely stunning

  • A mesmerizing, simply lovely interpretation. Mitchell has called herself "one of the last great smokers" and there is no question it has affected her voice, yet I can't say it has in any negative way. It's just different, more mature one might say. The open, almost lilting sound of her young voice would seem out of place for this interpretation. Fabulous.

  • wow what a beautiful singer at that age hats off to her

  • This song gets to me like not many can - my dear ones who have passed, the feelings of success and failure, love and loss, the beauty of my kids; all of that flashes thru mu mind when I hear this. Thanx for posting.

  • I hate that it has taken me this long to truly understand it all. Even though I knew at a younger age that I would look back and miss it. I never knew how much! But I wouldn't change a thing.

  • Eventually we all will understand the message of this song. It just takes years of life experience. When I hear it, I get emotional, over and over again.

  • my how her voice has changed. listen to her earliest cuts.

we now have a gift of a mature, melodious, deep massage of our auditory synapses.

  • i like it plain and simple. this is too gussied up.

  • I seriously got tears watching this... She's so talented and intelligent and beautiful. She's my idol.

  • If you dont get this. You wont be gettin nothing. Life is in her songs. Love, passion, Honesty and truth. And, a look at your soul. The Devil? No, A human being that shares wisdom. And gives it freely, through her songs. Thank you. For putting the video here. You must be human. xxx

  • I really like this version. I heard it in the car one day and though it was emotionally touching. I too have seen the world from both sides now.

  • I got goosebumps about five times watching this. Joni Mitchell, everybody.

  • I don't understand...There's no repeat button. Why doesn't youtube have a repeat button? I'd listen to this song over and over again....

  • @justcatfeelings Just type "repeat" between :"youtube" and ".com" in your adress bar when you're on a video, and it'll repeat it.

  • Comment removed

  • @justcatfeelings

0:33 <-- There is your repeat button. My pleasure.

  • @justcatfeelings At the end, you would see a big "Replay" button..

  • @L1Rui I think they mean auto-repeat.

  • Just Beautiful !!

  • WOW you have to see the transformation of this song. Check out the 1970 version and the 2000 version. From 1970, a fresh innocent Joni, to the 2000 wise, soulful and mature Joni.

  • i wish i could back in time......and be there once more before i die

    she was the very best

and still is in my heart
