In Australia we have a minimum wage where people don't suffer like this, so there's a balance between capitalism and a fair go. Either you get VERY lucky and you know someone that can give you a job on a business jet where you can make slightly more, but mostly it's through the regional airlines. The problem with airlines is all of the regulations via the patriot act they had to cut pilots pay after 9/11 because of increased compliance costs and gas prices. The gas prices are so high due to inflation so there is a lot of government to blame.

Big difference, isn't it? $17,000 is a co-pilot that just got hired by a small regional airline. When he gets upgraded to captain, he'll get 60,000-80,000. Then, Major airlines co-pilot starts out on a Boeing 737 $65,000 per year, compared to a B 777 captain with 20 year seniority, making $250,000. Similar with doctors.

We have type ratings which we add to our certificates that allow us to fly different airplanes. We are paid by the flight hour and we exercise the priveleges of our type ratings one at a time. In other words, I do not fly a 737 one day and a 767 the next, even if I have a type rating for both airplanes. There, I fixed it for you, now stop talking out your ass.
Different pilots are paid different salaries based on their expertise. A pilot who is only licensed to fly a Boeing 747 will make less than a pilot who is licensed to fly several different aircraft. And it's not like a pilot is going to crash because he's paid too little. You're either certified or you're not. That's a legal regulation. How much they are paid depends on the airlines and supply and demand.

Pilots who hold more liscense to fly different planes are valued more highly because, if they work for AA for example, they will be more useful operating the many different planes that AA has. If they work for Southwest, on the other hand, all that Southwest has is Boeing747s, so in that case, yes, it doesn't matter. It's not about what they flew in the past, it's about what they're legally allowed to fly now.

@AlexClinkenbeard ...an airline pilot can be on duty for 16 hours/day, but they can only fly 8 hours/day (max. 1000 flight hours/year). What people don't realize is that the pilots main bulk of pay is coming mostly from flying...and when they're on standby within that 16 hour duty day (without any flight hour)ie..weather delay-->they're only paid per diem of maybe $1.50 per hour!...although $17k is extremely low, the normal first year pay average is $20k It's true...I did it myself.

But my reason for why the people with the highest paying salaries are the ones who don't create anything is: they have been working at the company for a long time. Usually you have to work for 15 years until you are promoted to CEO of a company (unless you are the creator and appoint yourself the CEO

In Australia we have a minimum wage where people don't suffer like this, so there's a balance between capitalism and a fair go. On the flip side, we give unemployed people who don't WANT work, enough welfare to pay a house mortgage(my brother is doing it right now), which I think is too far in the other direction. Like I said, it's all about balance.

Either you get VERY lucky and you know someone that can give you a job on a business jet where you can make slightly more, but mostly it's through the regional airlines. @shotgunpriest thats a stupid statement, Pilots are way underpaid! its really hard to get in the profession and it costs you about 80 grand just to get youre licenses and on top of that you are paying about 200 dollars an hour for an airplane rental and you need about 1500 hours to even qualify for a airline. SO i wouldnt be surprised if some pilots are on welfare and its really sad!

I really feel sorry for these guys. I have a desk job which I've been at for just over 9 years. My USD equivalent salary is $29661.
I don't know what airline these people work for but to actually fly the plane on $22K on the second year paid less than the starting salaries for flight attendants ($30,024.54 to $34,973) on British Airways!
How on earth did this happen?!?!?

Quick thought, if you are willing to spend $100,000 on your education, don't expect anyone to pay you anymore than anyone else. You where the idiot to go in debt and gamble your future. You are talking about someone whe earned a Private Pilot's License, then an Instrument Rating, then Commerical, then Multi Engine, then Certified Flight Instructor, then Instrument and Multi Engine instructor, flew around 1500 hours, then flew 200 multi engine, Oh yeah, and went to college for probably a four year degree. Let's say around the age of 30, where the USAF has an age limit of 28 to get into the flight training program? @dahgutone The problem is that professional pilots can make between $17,000 per year and $250,000 per year. Big difference, isn't it? $17,000 is a co-pilot that just got hired by a small regional airline. When he gets upgraded to captain, he'll get 60,000-80,000. Then, Major airlines co-pilot starts out on a Boeing 737 $65,000 per year, compared to a B 777 captain with 20 year seniority, making $250,000. Similar with doctors.

I just wonder how many Americans have seen the government as a group of rich people who use the average working American as nothing more than a slave in the field to enrich those in the big house. Blackie, you are clueless. We are not paid a salary. We do not have licenses to fly different planes. Each of us has one certificate. We have type ratings which we add to our certificates that allow us to fly different airplanes. We are paid by the flight hour and we exercise the priveleges of our type ratings one at a time. In other words, I do not fly a 737 one day and a 767 the next, even if I have a type rating for both airplanes. There, I fixed it for you, now stop talking out your ass.

Different pilots are paid different salaries based on their expertise. A pilot who is only licensed to fly a Boeing 747 will make less than a pilot who is licensed to fly several different aircraft. And it's not like a pilot is going to crash because he's paid too little. You're either certified or you're not. That's a legal regulation. How much they are paid depends on the airlines and supply and demand.
Do you see how Michael Moore tries to scare you into buying his bullshit?

@blacksabbathgnr098 ...Don't know where you're getting your info, but pilots are paid based on the airplane that they currently fly..ie...past aircraft flown has no relevance on your pay per hour...years of service is the prime determining factor for your pay, even if you only flown one aircraft in your career. I suggest that you watch the "Frontline: the cost of flying cheap"...it exposes the reality of flying as a "regional airline pilot " not a "major airline pilot...quality of life differs.

@teach2fly Wrong. They are paid a salary, not by the hour. Pilots who hold more liscense to fly different planes are valued more highly because, if they work for AA for example, they will be more useful operating the many different planes that AA has. If they work for Southwest, on the other hand, all that Southwest has is Boeing747s, so in that case, yes, it doesn't matter. It's not about what they flew in the past, it's about what they're legally allowed to fly now.

@blacksabbathgnr098 ...I don't know why this response is being marked as a spam and deleted...but here it is again...Airline pilots are not paid by salary....you are unfortunately ill informed about the regional and major airlines...I cant blame you...this is exactly why we need to show the people the truth..what I mentioned in my multiple comments are from personal experiences...afterall, I was doing the airline grind at one point. :)...fyi Southwest Airlines don't fly the Boeing 747.

@AlexClinkenbeard ...an airline pilot can be on duty for 16 hours/day, but they can only fly 8 hours/day (max. 1000 flight hours/year). What people don't realize is that the pilots main bulk of pay is coming mostly from flying...and when they're on standby within that 16 hour duty day (without any flight hour)ie..weather delay-->they're only paid per diem of maybe $1.50 per hour!...although $17k is extremely low, the normal first year pay average is $20k It's true...I did it myself.

i lived in us for 10 years, still wondering why people like to come to us. What i witnessed was the most of us citizens are financial slaves. after tax 35% (in my case), rent, health insurance, all high expenses, there are just little money left to feed you some food. There's no American dream. I like to go back to south korea, my home as soon as i get my new job there.

@jayrod105 the top 1% of the major airlines MIGHT have a chance at making that much, but those days are over. The vast majority of airline pilots aren't paid that much. The numbers you see talked about are averages which are typically heavily biased and overbalanced by that top 1%.
And answer this: when there are 100+ people relying on you to fly safely and save their lives if something goes wrong, should you be underpaid, properly paid, or overpaid? And if you say properly, what's the amount

@mgmoore99 I agree they should be compensated appropriately. Engineers make sure buildings and bridges dont collapse, but you dont see them earning 300k (very few). All airline captains would be on this sort of coin. They have the same responsibility as a train driver, even less considering for the majority of the flight they dont do anything.
It is an overrated profession is all im saying and this footage is bullshit, they are very well compensated I know a pilot who works for Qantas.

@Nik84811 Good call. The part that annoys me about CEOs is its not like its their money. I dont mind Bill Gates or the entrepeneur earning big bucks if they have the risk, but a CEO who runs a company that isnt even theirs? In a fair world they would earn maybe 150k.
The part I found most interesting in this documentary is those who earn the most actually create nothing. Capitalism and free market economics would have to be the biggest con in modern history.

@jayrod105 I totally agree with what you are saying. I am quite annoyed when I hear of the highest paying CEO and it turns out this guy is making all this money off of a company that isn't even his. But my reason for why the people with the highest paying salaries are the ones who don't create anything is: they have been working at the company for a long time. Usually you have to work for 15 years until you are promoted to CEO of a company (unless you are the creator and appoint yourself the CEO
