As for children: Shouldn´t they be allowed to make up their own mind about things? But I would argue that Pullmans books are not really suited for young children, as they are very complex indeed.

In most of the media religion is either promoted or avoided. Religious americans dont seem to relize yet what a really BIG market atheists (and their children) are.
When I'm a parent, I will definitly show my children stuff that approach the atheistic point of view. Where im from the christian view is not so omnipresent, but it still impossible to "keep your children away from it". Now, I dont want too hide it from them, I want them to see other points of view.
PS: that last point really makes all the difference between non-believers and all the others. We wouldn't hide "other religions" to our children. Quite the opposite. Just show them everything. I saw quite a few docus and movies about jesus, mohammed, budda, history stuff with religious empires etc by the age of 12. i actually liked the movie. of course, it wasn't NEAR as good as the book. but still think about it: philip pullman understood the reason for the changes and didn't complain and liked the movie. so why should we complain when the author doesn't? XD but the series is soooo good.
Yes, looks at the movies coming out, most of them have some kind of sex scene, profanity, drug use, sexual themes, more violence than necessary not to mention the gory horror flicks. Now do really think they believe in Jesus and are following what he said when these type of movies are being produced. In times past there were some upstanding people in Hollywood and some that actual believe and followed God that was like in the 30's to 50's.

Pullman wrote a trilogy, and he hoped his less blatant "Compass" would lead to the other books as movie sequels - which are far more pointedly athesistic. The hoped for success of "Compass" never materialized, leaving the sequels' production doubtful.
Even though atheists are only about 4% of the U.S. population (less than 3% worldwide), they do represent a rather large percentage of Hollywood and other arts, so you are correct! Just hard to get a large audience for their worldview.

If you are a true believer, why would your mind be changed by Pullmans books? I read the Narnia chronicles and it did not change my mind :) - I am still an atheist. As for children: Shouldn´t they be allowed to make up their own mind about things? But I would argue that Pullmans books are not really suited for young children, as they are very complex indeed.

When a movie "pushes" non belief on kids, it's a huge problem. When kids are indoctrinated from birth, it's normal and acceptable. Let kids at least reach an age where they have a basic understanding of the world and allow them to choose for themselves. In most of the media religion is either promoted or avoided. Religious americans dont seem to relize yet what a really BIG market atheists (and their children) are.
When I'm a parent, I will definitly show my children stuff that approach the atheistic point of view. Where im from the christian view is not so omnipresent, but it still impossible to "keep your children away from it". Now, I dont want too hide it from them, I want them to see other points of view.

PS: that last point really makes all the difference between non-believers and all the others. We wouldn't hide "other religions" to our children. Quite the opposite. Just show them everything. I saw quite a few docus and movies about jesus, mohammed, budda, history stuff with religious empires etc by the age of 12. I knew by then that religion is more than just a blind believe, but, sadly, some approaches got a bit taken away by the possibilities of a unified world view among the population

i actually liked the movie. of course, it wasn't NEAR as good as the book. but still think about it: philip pullman understood the reason for the changes and didn't complain and liked the movie. so why should we complain when the author doesn't? XD but the series is soooo good.

Yes, looks at the movies coming out, most of them have some kind of sex scene, profanity, drug use, sexual themes, more violence than necessary not to mention the gory horror flicks. Now do really think they believe in Jesus and are following what he said when these type of movies are being produced. In times past there were some upstanding people in Hollywood and some that actual believe and followed God that was like in the 30's to 50's.

I now the statistics,and they are going down by the way from (90% to about 76%) but just because a person says they believe in God does not make them automatically on God's side.
For the simple fact is they do not follow any of his commands, they do what ever they want and say I beleive in God.
Also, the statistics do not show the god that they really are talking about is theirself, they are like yeah I beleive in myself which I think is god.

Pullman is simply telling a story about how the Catholic empire could ultimately become just as violent and overpowering as they once were in the past, which frankly I believe is a very real possibility.

Pullman wrote a trilogy, and he hoped his less blatant "Compass" would lead to the other books as movie sequels - which are far more pointedly athesistic. The hoped for success of "Compass" never materialized, leaving the sequels' production doubtful.
Even though atheists are only about 4% of the U.S. population (less than 3% worldwide), they do represent a rather large percentage of Hollywood and other arts, so you are correct! Just hard to get a large audience for their worldview.

Mine were from Encyclopedia Britannica (2006), but hey - they are unabashedly theistic in all they publish, right?
