WTVD....Larry Stogner is a legend in these parts, and so was Dan Williams in his day!
Who remembers Beverly Burke and Drew Smith? Who remembers Don Shea when he was the sports director for WTVD? Not to mention Rich Brenner who also worked at both WRAL and WTVD before he went to become the sports director over in the Triad for WGHP.
I was right there on the Brickyard that night!! It was awesome!! Virtually all of the Carolina fans I knew in high school was pulling for State that night!! I was a senior that year, 1983.
Beverly Burke spent some time in D.C. with WJLA in the late 70's and in the 90's with WUSA. I had very little knowledge that she worked in Raleigh around the time that State made their run to the championship. Speaking of that 1982-83 Cardiac Pack, they have to make a movie of that season.
In my personal opinion, the most exciting tournament run by any team. How they had to win the ACC TOURNEY was exciting then the final play is just flat out amazing.
These clips bring back a set of weird memories. The NCAA tournament, by the finals, you got to stay up late and, typically, it was the first night of the year Mom and Dad let you stay up past your bedtime and go to bed whenever you wanted, and you could sleep with your window open. In North Carolina, anyway. Watching this video is less a remembrance of facts but of a time.
THANK YOU for posting these wonderful videos. I am a 1998 Graduate of NCSU and I remember the Cardiac Pack. It was a wonderful trip down memory lane. My family actually RENTED a VCR to record the tournament. Back then, buying one was so expensive, that TV and appliance stores would rent them during special occasions. Go Pack!
A friend of mine bought one of the first VCRs and she taped every game of the tournament for her husband because he worked at night and couldn't watch the games.
I got a dub of the final game and all these news reports were on the tape.
We need to get the NCSU genetics department TO CLONE JIMMY V!!! Then, we might be able to return to the glory now lost. AAAAAARRRRGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! When Jimmy V left, we were considered, without question, one of hte greatest programs in history. Greater even than DUKE! NOW WE ARE COMPLETELY DESTROYED!!!! We must get back.
It brings memories and I also remember Don Shea. Lorenzo Charles would be sorely missed by this NC State fan who watched that game.
