  • He looks almost exactly like Wallace Breen from Half-Life 2.

  • Now to find out what that weirder feature was...!

  • You are lucky that you have this make/model of (manual) typewriter. I'm over 50 now, but one of the first jobs I had was working on typewriters. This was just around the time that electronic typewriters were coming into the market. These remarkable 'writing machines' were actually quite fascinating in there inner workings. After having worked on typewriters for many years I soon came to know the 'good the bad & the ugly' machines. These were the best of the lot.

  • Wheres the rest of the video?

  • Here's what I don't understand:

If an old typewriter has benefits (creative writing was mentioned) and people think about getting one, why is it that next to such a thing there is a standard Apple keyboard?

Wouldn't it make sense to pick the best of both and write on a computer but with a decent (mechanical) keyboard? It seems to me the pc universe is just too touchy and too shiny to remember the good things there were, like good (typewriter-like) keyboards.

  • @klackabaiaschi That's an interesting question. Maybe the demand for typewriter-like keyboards is too small.I personally would like a keyboard that is more like a typewriter!

  • @arcticpenguin5 then get a buckling-spring keyboard! check out the unicomp customizer or ibm model m. nowadays computers have mushy membrane switches, but back in the 80s and mid 90s, they had mechanical switches, they feel amazing! check it out; i'm typing on one right now...

  • i dont know why but even as a computer guy I have a thing for typewriters I find them interesting. I have an IBM Selectric II but it wont turn on . some one told me its that it needs to be cycled with a cycle knob. after figuring out how to take the ribbon off i discovered the gears wont budge. and the keys are stuck. maybe a jam

  • @Wavedude21101 - If you have the time or inclination you 'may' be able to bring it back to life. It would be best if you could find info on how to open the case & spray some WD-40 onto the various moving parts of the machine including the motor bearings. But there surely is a knack to opening them. In fact, WD-40 can bring many typewriters back to life as effectively what happens is the old grease/oil goes 'syrupy'... or 'gluey'. Keep the oil away from electrics & rubber though!

  • @Wavedude21101 Check the power source. If you hear no energy at all, there might be something wrong with the plug which can be easily replaced.

  • I have one from when my dad was in college,it a Brother brand one.It works very well. Its 13 or 12 yrs old but still works smoothly :)

  • I notice this is an electric. I have an Olympia roughly of the same style, yet it is a manual. I love mine. Fifty years old and still works like brand new.

  • @luvrboy321 This one is manual.

  • it's Olympia SM9

  • I agree I have exactly the same typewriter

  • Hello I just got a typewriter and it was kinda old, but what Im trying to get to is that my keys are "sticky" as in its very slow when the keys return do you know how to fix this?

    thanks

  • @dmikrut - Get some WD-40 and spray onto ALL of the moving parts of the machine. Leave if for a few days, then repeat. Exercise the movement of sluggish parts & over time the keys will loosen up. You will have to have a good eye & lots of patience to locate & loosen off mechanisms that have gone 'gluey' from old grease & oil. ;o)

  • im looking to buy one

  • you suck at typing.

  • @MiracleCrewChannel

Well, you suck at trolling :)

  • My grandpa uses a typewriter.

  • Your a good and quick typer!!!!!!!!

  • Olympia SM9 portable. Probably the best portable typewriter ever made.

  • Also the reason why QWERTY still exists.

  • Also, what brand is the typewriter that you're using in this video?

  • @outsiderst Sorry, I don't know the brand. It was not a terribly old one, though, because it had the automatic shift function. I don't think it is stupid to invest in a Typewriter, especially if you're studying creative writing.

  • @arcticpenguin5 It is an Olympia SM9 Deluxe from the 1960's.

  • @arcticpenguin5 It says "Olympia" on the machine.

  • @arcticpenguin5 ...is it really that easy for you you type like how it looks in the video?how did you do that.

  • @MrKrevolution It can be slower than typing with a keyboard but it's a lot of fun!

  • @outsiderst it's an olympia

  • @outsiderst It is an Olympia SM 9 made in Western Germany in the late 60s.

  • @outsiderst Olympia

  • @outsiderst it is an olympia. they sell for about 100 dollars on ebay. I happen to own one. I love typewriters!

  • @21djk Have one exactly like that one with also white keys. I've got it yesterday at the junkstore for $5,00. It is missing one of the plastic paper supports at the front but that's all beside a few minor scuffs. Mine has a german keyboard so it is a bit different typing with the Y and the Z sitting in the wrong spot. But i love it. I hope to find another one just like it because the SM9 and SM7 are great. I also hope to get a SM7. Does you're machine have white colour too?

  • @outsiderst Olympia SM9

  • That was an awesome demonstration of a Typewriter. Sorry if that sounds too excited, but I wasn't really sure if people still used them today. It's really exciting to know that they are still in action. Out of curiosity, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind giving me some advice. I am a student in college right now and will most likely be going onto major in Creative Writing at UCF and I was wondering if it would be stupid to invest in a Typewriter for writing and along side my Mac?

  • @outsiderst Sorry, I don't know the brand. It was not a terribly old one, though, because it had the automatic shift function. I don't think it is stupid to invest in a Typewriter, especially if you're studying creative writing.

  • how do you delete on those things....

  • @sleeksheepfox you DONT DELETE On typeWRITERS! when you type a letter, its printed on the paper with ink!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @sleeksheepfox some typewriters have delete functions kind of like white-out

  • SEAHORSE NOISES!

  • Great demonstration!!! Where did u get it

  • i dont like you. i dont like your face.

  • soon we wont need these anymore we be reading books into tech e books

  • I love the sound of typewrites, i wish they made typewriters that you could plug into your PC (and yes i know about the IBM model M)

  • snappy performance! impressive! Olympia sm9, 1966, yes?

  • Believe it or not I soak them overnight in water with some dish soap in it (take the ribbon out first), hose out the inside to get the soap residue out, and either set them in the sun (in summer) or on a portable electric heater (in winter) to dry them out before they rust. Sounds crazy but it works.

  • @20657 - We did use to do that when we serviced them, although we didn't quite use dish detergent! Better if the water is warm to hot & 'stab' at paint brush around to get to parts deeper in the machine - but beware of slipping off little springs on mechanisms!!! As you say, dry the machine out on a hot summers day... the apply a light coating of WD-40 around the machine. Then do some typing on it & 'exercise' as many of the other functions as you can to 'work in' the oil.

  • You are pretty fast dude that's probably cause it was out in your time no affence but you are probably used to it cause i would guess that It was out in your time :/

  • is that motherfucker electric

  • what is the name of this typewriter???

  • @TheMasterjiujitsu1 It seems to be an olympia model, and by comparing it to mine, maybe 1950s? I'm not exactly sure of the date, but I hope this helps.

  • Whats the best way to find mp3iiiiify to download this mp3? Someone told me to google mp3iiiiify.

  • You need to learn to touchtype!

  • @AinslieRiddell Touchtyping is incredibly difficult on mechanical typewriter, the pressure needed to depress each key is many times that of a computer. Sorry if you know this.

  • @DisneyEnvy It took me about a month to get used to typing on a manual. Touchtyping is second nature now.

  • @AinslieRiddell I touch type with my Olympia SG 1 all the time. My SM9 though I can't seem to get my pinkies to get a dark enough print. That just goes to show you how much of a workhorse the desktop typewriters are meant to be.

  • freud!

  • how much they cost

  • At a Salvation Army, $6.00 on Saturdays, and a regular $10.00 on all of the others.

  • you seem to know a lot about typewriters... if you don't mind my asking, could you please do a video about cleaning them? i just bought an old typewriter that could use a good cleaning but i'm not sure how to go about it...

  • that looks like an Olympia DeLuxe SM 9

  • this is pretty awesome. it sounds like firecrackers

  • 0_0 I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think he bought it on ebay

  • where did you get that
