You have made excellent points and my sentiments exactly...I loved the addition of Hughes and Coverdale...Burn and Stormbringer..and then "Come Taste the Band"...Where out of my Billy Cobham/James Gang FUnk here comes Tommy Bolin...Loved his solo LPS....RIP TOMMY BOLIN>...
This track is the only one known to me where Bolin is on par or even surpasses Blackmore on a classic MkII/Mk.III tune. Very good. Of course, Coverdale and Hughes sing as dreadful as one gets used to while listening to their live performances from that time, but, surprisingly, they fail to destroy the song completely.
the reason Blackmore left is because he didn't like the funky, soul genre the band had taken on, so to replace him they weren't trying to get a Blackmore clone ,they obviously wanted someone to better suit their new direction
call me a douchebag yeah...... but playing blackmore stuff all this years makes me see what a stylist he is....true to some of the comments..stormbringer is truly a TMIB stuff, his solo finished the story..........
After all this time, my favourite Purple album is Come Taste The Band. I love this line-up, and this performance is just funkier with Bolin's take on it.
I felt Ritchie did the right thing leaving Purple and, for him, went on to better things with Rainbow, especially the Rising album.
I saw them in Auckland Nov 13th 75 & Tommy Bolin was fantastic, stole the whole show, what a night!! I will never forget it....Thanks so much for that night Tommy RIP...Carl Mostert Wales UK
I was at this show with my uncle at the Long Beach Arena. I was 12 and I have never seen and smelled so much pot in the air ever. It was heady stuff for a catholic school boy at the time..LOL!!
A comment to all: Tommy Bolin was an excellent successor to Blackmore because he was a very different player. Quite frankly no one on earth could replace Blackmore who, in my mind, is the greatest rock guitarist of all time. I think he's better than Hendrix. But to get back top Bolin, if you cant top what you had, change it around a bit. Listen to the Stormbringer album then Come Taste the Band. If you had no idea who the guitarists were they follow each other very well! Purple rules!
Ritchie Blackmore is far better than any guitarist I ever heard, including Hendrix.
I never heard anything special about Tommy Bolin. Joe Walsh was better in the James Gang than Bolin. Ritchie Blackmore is way underrated even though love by those of us who know him for more than Smoke on the water.
@oberfour1 Yea, I agree! The inventiveness of Blackmore is awesome! The evolution from purple marks I, II, III, IV then into Rainbow especially the 1st 5 albums incredible! I agree Jw is better also. The one thing I will popint out though is that he succeeded both with a different flair because Blackmore and Walsh are both unique unto themselves.
As much as I hesitate to admit it , I 've always considered Tommy Bolin to be slighly above average, that's it.. He never re-wrote the language of hard rock like Blackmore did. His singing voice was very average , too. BUT , all things considered, this is a bitchin' version of Stormbringer and the band is on fire..Ian Paice is just the coolest lefty ever on the drums..
Too bad they didn't make this concert an album/release instead of the infamous "Last Concert in Japan"... when his left arm was numbed from using drugs.
I was listening some of Tommy's original stuff.. he was really a different kind of musician. He was much more funk and groove oriented.. and his talent was more in composing then in improvising powerful solos.. I think they picked Bolin because of the bands desire to go in that direction. Tommy does pretty good soloing here but on other videos he really did not fair well. His solo stuff was quite awesome... check those things out.
im sorry is there only one opinion allowed about deep purple? i saw your videos your great. pull my head out of my ass..................really? i would love to her some of your other insightfull fascist ideas
I've never felt that Tommy fitted in Richie's shoes but you can't help but compare them. Maybe Tommy was a better Jazz/ Fusion player that Richie you rarely get to hear his potential in DP though. From about 6:30 on his feel starts to assert itself here.
VERY CLOSE TO BLACKMORE ON "STORMBRINGER"...TOMMY GETS A BAD RAP FOR NOT BEING BLACKMORE? WTF? I ALWAYS FIND IT FUNNY TO HEAR PEOPLE COMPAIR APPLES TO ORANGES WHEN IT COMES TO EACH GUITARIST'S UNIQUE STYLE OF PLAYING
"Come taste the Band" ws a great album, and Tommy did a great job in my opinion. Yah, he wasn't Richie, butnot many people were. But by all accounts, Richie was a prick who stayed to himself. Look at any footage, he stays by himself, theres no interaction with the band at all, always looked pissed off about something. DP was my second most favorite band of all time. Tom and Dave did a great job while they were with DP, awesome. Thats just my opinion. A great, great Band period, no denyin that.
@MegaBob77777 No discussion, I do agree with you but not totally .. I don't care what Blackmore did on stage, his playing is UNIQUE AWESOME etc etc, so I don't care about his PUBLIC RELATIONS with the other members provided the music is good enough. BLACKMORE (in Purple or Rainbow) is my all time favorite music, Led Zeppelin is my 2nd favorite.. CTTBand is excellent, much better than THOBLight or SAMasters or TBROn (even Blackmore playing in those albums) to be honest.. S.Morse period is BAD
@misterbill18 Have you heard Bolin on Billy Cobham's "Spectrum" album? He steps into John McLaughlin's shoes like it was nothing. Cobham was the drummer for Mahavishnu Orchestra, maybe the most intense band in history. He's also on Alphonse Mouzon's "Mind Transplant. Mouzon was drummer for 11th house, another super-technical fusion band. Bolin's best work is outside Purple. Blackmore is loved for writing classic Purple tunes, not because he was the better guitarist or even musician.
At 4.20 it reminds me of that dude Curtis from (cheech and chong).. Looks like y'all got a taste of soul brother,''You know what you need with this fine lookin machine? He's all,'' what a chic? Tommy Bolin is great musician, i especially love Teaser. He was not a good fit for DP - but was it was neither the Gillan/Coverdale or Blackmore/Bolin thing that ruined DP. Imho it was Glenn Hughes. He tried to add some funk to DP and he loved to sing as much as possible. Both was terrible.
David didn't sing on three of the ten songs on CTTB, so I can understand he was frustrated. But they also found Tommy's drug problem too much to deal with. Think of what could have been if they helped him quit it - before the drugs killed him.
I was leaning on the stage in Asbury for the first Rainbow tour. Powerhouse band. Cozy Powell was amazing. Asbury was a great venue. I wish Tommy played this good when I saw them at Radio City in NY. I guess this was one of his few sober nights on the tour and it is a shame because when he was sober he was amazing.
@tcstratman I was leaning on the stage in front of Bolin at Radio City. You are right Tommy was a bit out of it. Cool story...he dropped a pick in front of me that I couldn't reach. I started to point at it (somewhat emphatically) and he looked at me like I was crazy. He finally realized it was a pick he dropped and smiled at me. After the song he picked it up and handed it to me. It was real sweet, you could feel he was a good soul. I still have the pick and a frozen moment in time.
@mikepaster1 I had an 8x12 photo of Bolin from that show and he looked totally out of it. A friend of mine took some great pictures Hehad so much eye shadon on and had this blank look on his face. It was such a shame because he had so much talent. Those were some days though, I saw Rainbow at I believe the Paladium in NY with ACDC openning up. I was sixth row center stage and I saw Angus get his ass kicked by the guy in front of me. I beleive it was 77 or 78. Angus was being a dick + paid forit
rixx - right you are - ritchie just became an ash..... and if we look at what he's doing now - don't even worth to talk about. sad thing for tommy to leave early...
@albundyphd How can you make such a pathetic comment like that! Bolin WAS a guitarist, a very good one when he was straight. Lord played the keyboards and Paice played the drums. All different instruments so you cannot compare. If your going to comment, make it constructive one.
@jpphoopha WTF are you talking about!! Tommy Bolin is easily one of the best Guitarist of all time! Coverdale is one of the best rock vocalist not to mention he beats out Gillian by a long shot! And Hues while not the best bassist is still pretty decent and his voice blends well with Coverdale! Really from a pure musical perspective this was the best line up. True they wern't as popular but they were as good as they got at this point!
David Coverdale's voice is obviously pretty shot in this performance. Probably due to a heavy tour schedule and over-doing it every night. Even so, he is giving it his all, and he remains my favorite male vocalist of all time. What a voice that man has!
Hey "Drawlbag" if you don't know what you're talking about DON'T POST! David & Glenn ARE on this recording & video. Ritchie quit the band, so they got someone of equal talent to fill his shoes. @gmjimmi You really need to pull your head outta your ass! Just because Tommy had some problems with substance abuse, it doesn't have a damn thing to do with his contributions to to world of music. If you took every musician that has drug problems out of the picture, we'd really be missing out on some fantastic music. You obviously don't have a clue as to what's going on musically on "Come Taste the Band", so that's your loss. As the old saying goes " Free your mind & your ass will follow"
@Rixx5637 I agree with you. Saw them twice, once w Ritchie, once with Bolin. Bolin was far better at stage prescence and interacting w the band members and audience. Ritchie seemed like he was playing to himself the whole nite, back to audience, no interaction with band members. Always checkin his sound. people want to see and hear a good show, and Bolin gave them one. Hughes and Coverdale were great also in my opinion. Original and this lineup was best I think.Great band, awesome.
@MegaBob77777 Dude you are lucky to have seen Tommy play live. That rates right up there with the lucky ones that have seen Jimi Hendrix. I never got to see either of them, but their music lives on. Thanks for sharing that!
@Rixx5637 Back in those days they ere all great, Ritchie playing with Dio, and don't forget what "Gillan" was doing, and the musicians who played in it, like Gers who plays in Maiden now.
What am I looking at here?? Stormbringer might just be the best DP song ever so where are David, Glenn and Ritchie? If it ain't a proper video, don't post it...
I think because he was so different to Ritchie though Ritchie of caurse was a better guitarist but Bolin was good on his own and he could achieve a lot more if live up to it...
Deep Purple wasn't afraid to funk it up. It hurt them but I am pretty sure there are more DP fans now because of the bands diversity. Tommy Bolin forever!!!!!
Tommy was just getting popular and demanded by many too fast. He had soo much more because his talent and creativity was always radiating. I love Burn and put it up against Machine Head. CTTB was great but rushed. DP should of got Uli Jon Roth to fill in for Tommy Bolin.

Bolin era was cool for me.
I think because he was so different to Ritchie though Ritchie of caurse was a better guitarist but Bolin was good on his own and he could achieve a lot more if live up to it...

My favorite DP song AND ToMmY is GREAT!!!
I wore this out on 33 1/3 and a cassette twice!!!
Every great musical artist that left us between 1960 and 1980 has left me a little more empty. But the MusiC never dies.

Deep Purple wasn't afraid to funk it up. It hurt them but I am pretty sure there are more DP fans now because of the bands diversity. Tommy Bolin forever!!!!!

You said it, like me.
I'd say they were at their peak with Tommy, plus Ian Paice's drumming was never better than in those days.
'Burn' and 'Come taste the band' were their best recordings, IMO

Tommy was just getting popular and demanded by many too fast. He had soo much more because his talent and creativity was always radiating. I love Burn and put it up against Machine Head. CTTB was great but rushed. DP should of got Uli Jon Roth to fill in for Tommy Bolin.

If you like the Tommy era of DP check out the band Boomerang lead by Mark Stein,Vanilla Fudge, with a 16 yr old guitarist Rich Ramirez.
