IV. Rationalism will have grown, but I don't see it toppling religion anytime soon.

    V. If I were to take a side in a religious crusade it would be for nonreligious reasons, obviously, and that would all depend on the circumstances.

  • I. I don't see it as hypocritical. I, personally, scorn them for proselytizing by lying and appealing to base emotions and ego. In general, I see atheists simply trying to correct those mistakes.

II. Anyone who is capable of rational thought should be our target.

III. Either because they were not rationalist and believed the right things for the wrong reasons or because their emotional comfort outweighed intellectual honesty.

    (cont)

  • Thank you for some provocative questions. I concurr that a fight among religions would be absured to participate in. Are you hinting that one sect is better than another? For example: are some protestant are better than some Jewish sects? I do think that Humanism is the measure for building alliances with religious people. We (atheists) should retain and defend our positions but within an alliance of those that are compelled to work for social good.

I am on the East Coast of the US.

  • I wish you would have narrated the Audio books to "The God Delusion" and "God is not Great". They are seriously so bad I just read the books the old-school way. (not with my ipod)

  • you have a great voice!

  • 1. It benefits society to correct poor decisions made by individuals which affects society. As an atheist I look at it like telling a child not to touch a hot stove.

    2. Everyone with the capacity to reason.

    3. Varies, often societal pressures

    4. Rationalist Secularism in the USA

    5. Neutrality as long as possible, then if I must fight atheism because I would rather die than live in a lie.

  • 1) I have not seen any serious advocates of atheism suggest we silence theists. Most of the serious ones are very strong proponents of free speech.

    2) Children, innoculate them against religion with knowledge!

    3) Far as I'm concerned, lack of intellectual fortitude, or intellect itself.

    4) Less religious yet.

    5) No, not my business. I don't fight anyway, I flee to a safe spot. I'd go to Australia I think. Why? Because I like to live.

  • If you were born blind & I tried to explain color or your own blindness or sight, would you be capable of understanding? Of course not. If I told you "you're blind" that would be meaningless to you. If I said "you're in darkness" could you agree? Never. If I told you that you needed to see, that you would be so happy if you could see IT WOULDN'T MEAN A THING TO YOU BECAUSE YOU'RE BLIND. You my friend are spiritually blind,...just a fact.

  • @FIVERBEYOND Because they have been witness to more of the negative religious aspects, Im australian and europe has been exposed to more of the harmful side effects of religion than alot of regions, atheism is organic, it occurs naturally everywhere where as organised religion requires indoctrination to survive one or two generations without preaching and its gone atheism dos not require preaching because it is logical

  • Why do so many atheists have British accents?

    1. It is morally wrong to silence them. However, it is right to stop them from breaking the law.

    2. The intellectual religious types, who try to look at their faith rationally.

    3. There is an inate and deep need for what religion offers.

    4. Edging towards secularism, but it's frighteningly close!

    5. I would not take up arms to help one religion defeat another.

  • How about mind your own business .. ATHEIST !

  • What are you body? British, or just an intelectual snob? That word "propa" gave ya away Mack. Number 4 of the Religion most promonet Reli. is probably those 12Steppers Neo-Wilsonian of Psychotics Anonymous. You cann't get any more fundamentalist neo nazi than them.

  • 1. VFX was simply fodder for ridicule until he broke the law in his attempt to censor free speech. Then he was fair game to have his backside kicked by the law.

    2. Those who have been raised in a religion but who have never really believed or really thought about their beliefs.

    3. I have no idea; perhaps it's due to random lobotomies.

    4. I see the balance shifting to rationalism in the US.

    5. Absolutely not. But I would be vocal in calling both sides stupid and ridiculous.

  • I. Yes, but if I don't speak out for my beliefs they'll silence us.

II. The children, fo sho. The reason why it's so hard for somebody to unconvert from a religion is because they grew up with it; the religion has been ingrained by repetition, and they've relied on it so much for emotional support it makes them blind.

III. I'd say they're taking a step backwards.

IV. If people evolve brains, then more atheists. :-) But stupid ppl never die out, sadly.

    V. I would run away. XD

  • I. Not THAT they're prostelytizing but WHAT and HOW they're prostelytizing.

II.This isn't a question of demographics, really, but logically speaking there should be education from youth so that a choice can be made by the individual later.

III. Because it makes sense to then, as atheism makes sense to me. It isn't acurate to call it choice. It is simply what their minds speaks as logic.

    IV. I foresee more atheism.

    V. I'd choose what made sense to me. I'd be fighting because it's what I do.

  • I. Uh... no. When is the last time atheists came to anyone's door trying to convert them?

II. All of them are important, but if I had to pick I'd say the children.

III. There are many possible reasons. From falling to hucksterism, to trying to fit in with loved ones, to experiencing something explained as god by that person, to fear, to simply finding atheism a very bleak position to have. (Since there's no comfy afterlife belief.) I don't agree with any of those, but those are examples.

  • IV. I don't think my country is particularly religious. But I hope the thing with the muslims doesn't turn into a witchhunt against them (as it may well do), because I do not think my country would benefit from that.

    V. Fighting and dying is not my style. I only have one life you know.

  • I think they ought to present themselves strictly as Secular Humanist and not simply atheist. Gore Vidal used to do that all the time. I think that is what gave rise to the "Atheist Religion".

  • @lookit87

Ugh I hate the idea of atheism being a religion.

  • Depending on the situation...if it was an "atheists Vs religions" war, I'd most probably side with atheists...but not unconditionally. I'd fight for the one I thought was right, or try to remain neutral.

I'm a pacifist, and prefer to avoid any kind of violence. Anything done with intent to seriously hurt others in any way never (or rarely) yields in anything good.

There, my answers, written at 1 AM, night before the math exam. :D

    Cheers!

    VM

  • Well thanks very much for the answers :).

I hope you do well in the exam, & don't blame me if your don't :P (you'll do fine!)

  • IV. Shifting towards atheism, in any of it's forms and strengths. My generation is more educated and free-minded than that of my brother (82'), and younger generations than mine (89') even more so.

The overall mindset of ppl in Croatia is turning away from Balkanian barbarism, and towards a more sophisticated state. The process is slow, but constant. :-)

  • III In my experience, mostly when they are overwhelmed by a strong emotional loss, and turn to gods for comfort instead of turning to themselves and their loved ones (if any). It makes them feel better, and looks like an easy way out of suffering. I've talked to quite a few Christians, and several of them told me that I cannot comprehend the purpose of believing in God because I haven't reached rock bottom...because God will always love you, and will never betray you; he can't by definition!

  • Cont.

As for other religious groups, the reasons are similar. Search for something more, the feeling of being lost, fear of death...many reasons, and most of them come from a lack of self esteem and a weak sense of self. Also, some people have an addict mentality, and religion is a good choice...better than gambling, drugs etc. anyway. Lesser of many evils, IMO.

  • II. Although none of the groups should ever be disregarded and given up on, I'd turn towards educating the youth. They should be taught about multiple religions, their history, etc. Let them choose their own...

I'd put an emphasis on the historical purpose of gods, and the difference between religion "facts" and science facts...because the holy books are allegorical in nature, and not to be taken literally, which seems to be a very large problem.

  • I. It is a bit hypercritical, yes. I support silencing-or rather, successful public debunking of creationists when they spread false information and "disprove" evolution.

However, as long as their preaching remains in it's place and serves to give spiritual guidance and stays out of politics and science, I am against any form of censorship. Freedom of speech should be respected, after all.

Note that brainwashing isn't spiritual guidance or moral support.

  • 5. Assuming it was a religion vs. religion thing, I would just try to steer clear. If things really got out of control I would GTFO if possible.

If it was a religion vs. my country thing, in that case I would be much more likely to get involved.

  • Thanks for the answers, the more the better :D

    -TTF

  • 4. Here in the States...not sure. Judging by various polls (not crashed by Pharyngula lol!) it seems like the people are slowly moving away from religion, but in 10 years it would still be very much a religious society.

Judging by many of the recent legal ruling that are coming down is another matter. Legal battles involving religion are becoming much more prominent recently, and the ruling are generally against the religious side if the argument. Creationism, ID, school prayer, etc.

  • 3. I guess I touched a bit on this in question 2. I am sure there are plenty of reasons why a rational person would convert, but i would have to say that emotions would play a huge role. That, and fear. Fear of death, fear of never seeing a loved one again.

Another reason may be that, even though they are a rational person, they never had a rational reason to not believe. That might sound silly, but many rational people don't believe simply because they just don't think about it.

  • 1. In general I do not think it is right for us to try and silence them. However, there is a time and place for their preaching, and we should try to keep it out of places where they don't belong.

There is also an issue of the dangers involved in allowing them to preach certain things. Just as freedom of speech does not cover things like yelling fire in a crowded public area when there is no fire, preaching should not cover truly dangerous messages that intend to incite violence.

  • 2. I would have to go for option 1 for a few reasons. The first is that many religions tend to act as a barrier between certain aspects of reality, and that the religious tend to ignore things that discount their particular beliefs. Getting through to those people, whether life-long or newly converted, will be more difficult than to those who have yet to be indoctrinated. We do not have unlimited resources, so we should use the ones we have where they count.

    ...

  • Q2 cont.

Also, even though I would hope that people would be able to shed all of their irrational beliefs, I would much rather have a rational theist than a fundie. Educate the young, and even if they turn to theism they will still have their education.

The newly converted will still have the "tools" to shed any irrational beliefs, and it very well may be that their conversion had to do with a specific event, whose effect will diminish over time.

  • More Q2. Sheesh.

A brush with death, or loss of a loved one is a powerful converter. Over time I would hope that the rational theist would see why they converted and understand that it was due to emotional reasons, and not evidence-based ones.

The fundies have walled themselves off, and are a waste of time and resources. If they are to shed their irrational beliefs it is something only they can do. There isn't much that we could say or do that would ever penetrate their dogmatic beliefs.

  • OK I need to answer these. I am sorry not be as eloguent as you and Exegeratedelegy. But I will do my best to answer them today and upload when In satisfied with the result.

  • Look forward to it, & who says your not a eloquent as EE or myself? Simply not true.

    -TTF

  • Well the answers are recoreded, just need to edit themm but the some someone tagged me.. ;-P

  • :(

    -TTF

  • My vid is rendering now, soon ready for uplood..

  • Only 500 characters!? To answer 5 very serious questions, the last of which is really tricky!? I've fave'd it to think about it.

    Here we go:

    I. It is hypocritical to scorn Christians for proselatisng, but it is not hypocritical to scorn them for their arguments when they proselatyse. Yes, it is right to try and silence them when they try to get money from people for not working and for being able to only proselatise and get more money for that.

  • II. This question gets different answers on different levels: 1/ Children, because they are the future, but also for their own lives and happiness. 2/ Already religious - yes, for some of them are dangerous, others have power, and the ones who are not of these two types, provide a safe haven for them. And, also, don't forget they are the parents of the children, who we targeted in the first place; 3/ About the third group of people, I wouldn't bother. There are very, very few of them.

  • III. It is a mystery to me. They must have some personal reasons.

IV. I am a citizen of two countries, and I don't have statistical data for either. But I am a bit uneasy about the return ( with a vengeance) of religion in countries of Eastern Europe and Russia.

  • V. The key word in this question (in the video, not in the description), is "most unlikely". Thank goodness!

  • you atheis are gonna burn in hell !!!!

  • It's absolutely fantastic to see a thirteen year old has a firm grasp of the concept of an infinite non corporeal existence writhing within the external flames of a Boschian nightmare, but cannot seem to understand simple spelling & the fact one only needs a single exclamation mark. Still, keep up the good work.

    -TTF

  • 4. i live in Denmark - which is 2nd or 3rd in the world, in being atheistic / agnostic ... lead by Sweden.

powers are shifting towards Islam... but only because there are getting more and more of them :D they are breading !!

but over time, i think that these people will educate themselves out of religion... also because we have such a good social service structure... which is an important factor

  • I'm not so optimistic that people will educate themselves out of religion, it's worked for two thousand years already & it's philosophies haven't changed much in since its inception. Thanks for the answers.

    -TTF

  • 5. If lets say Muslims and Christians start a war... i'll join the Christian side anytime !

eventhough christians are nutcases - they are less nutcases then muslims ! -- remember that the western world is based on Christiany, a weak religion...

the reason why the christians allways won, is because they accept science, just at little more then anyone else :)

  • If you mean by 'accept science' the fact that western christianity was willing to utilise it in the form of new weapons & ways to propagate their religion, I agree but we must remember these were the people who invented the inquisition & had Galileo imprisoned because of scientific breakthroughs.

    -TTF

  • yes and no... the inquisition is the catholic church, and mainly in spain i think ?

the christians were more obsessed in either slaying muslims or pwn the villagers around the country... :-)

  • .. and burn some witches...

  • 3. either because they stop thinking, or get scared... like old people...

or want to join the community or by marriage... some of these may in their heart still be atheists.. like people in Muslim countries

  • 2. everyone

  • 1. I believe that by silencing people with insane thinking like VFX - we remove the cap on our speed to accumulate thinkers.

having people of religion in a society is a handicap, just like any other handicap - these people spread the deciese by indoctrinating their kids, and essentially limiting their society's total thinkinskills.

  • every one in the world only knows about 5% of things to know lets say you knew 50% of EVERYTHING Question 6: is'nt it possible that God exist in the other 50% percent that you dont know about!? And dont tell me no because you dont know the things you dont know about! Thats like asking somone at an airport to your knowledge could any one have tampored with your bags with out you knowing? WHAT? How would i know!?!?!?!

  • Ok, where to begin. I think the best place would be to say, you constructed your comment in such a way that it made me momentarily believe I had developed dyslexia. However to say everyone knows about 5 % of every fact ever collated is wildly optimistic. Also the way the question is phrased sounds like you are assuming we don't already know more than 50% of everything as a species. If the universe is infinite by definition we will never know everything.

  • That is not to say that we are not entering a stage in our civilization where we have reached our limits of enlightenment. Who is to say?. We might already have 97 of our total attainable knowledge. Next, yes it is feasible that in an infinite universe a god cannot exist but it is therefore equally likely that every other god in mythology existed. I'm sure this is not a view you would subscribe to.

  • Thirdly, do not tell me how to answer questions that you pose. Otherwise the whole exercise is rendered pointless. Finally yes it is possible to answer the question, is it possible that some-one tampered with your bags without your prior knowledge. If you have been with your bags since you packed them & have not taken your eyes off them. The answer is no. If you have left them unattended for any length of time then of course it is possible.

  • So please, try not to pose anymore questions that take this many comments to decipher. Next time Id have to make a whole video about it.

    -TTF

  • Is that referencing my comment/s to Whispersofthedreamer? lol

    -TTF

  • You my friend are a great thinker, good questions 5 stars

  • Thank you, it may be hyperbole to say great but the sentiment is much appreciated.

    -TTF

  • Anyone who is asking good questions instead of attacking is a great person in my eyes. Some people get carried away. However I have not seen all your video's but based on this one I don't see you as that type.

  • I've done one or two, so don't be too premature lol

    -TTF

  • lol thats ok, well I love the bible, check out this video on you tube I wonder what you think about this.

    "Tracing your Ancestors through History"

  • I took a note of them and will answer in a vid soon :-)

  • Good to know. Looking forward to them. :)

    -TTF

  • Hey there Tempus; just to let you know, I'm going to be answering these in a video-response at some point in the not too distant future ;)

    George

  • Good to hear it. I would make this longer but I'm trying to answer these before I have to get some work done :)

    -TTF

  • 1. From what ive witnessed most fundamentalists on YouTube have become a staple diet and endless source of amusement and inspiration to the Atheist/Comedy community, losing them would be to the detriment of everyone.

    2. Most fundamentalists believe in the eventual "Armageddon" so as long as they do not have the means to bring this about, their mostly harmless.

    3. Id take them to the nearest Museum of Paleontology..

  • 4. Id imagine a higher percentage of Atheists, some Christianity, with the most religious being mainly immigrants.

    5. War is utterly pointless. Its nothing more than a distraction for the docile masses these days, let them gaze upon the "fireworks display". Unless theres the imminent threat from Dornier Do 17 overhead were gonna be fine.

  • I can say these are the most laid back answers I think I'm going to get lol. Ta very much :)

    -TTF

  • 1. Who tried to silence them? If somebody did then yes. But never heard of a case where an Atheist tryed to silence an christian. Some Atheists even helped get PSC back when he was suspended for his Moslem videos.

The freedom of speech is there for everyone even if the words spread are pulled out of some donkeys butt...

hmm... a movie quote popped into my mind: "Your right senorita. The woman is allowed to speak! But arrest anyone who listens."

  • 2. You don't have to educate someone out of a religion - just educate them and the rest will follow ^^

    3. haven't got a clue.

    4. My guess would be that Atheism will increase over time. "Only" 27% or so are really into religion here. It's not so bad for a Christian country ;)

    5. No. But I would kill, as a last resort, to defend me or the people I care about.

  • When I say silence, I am refering to people like FakeSagan & TAA bulling people of YouTube because of conflicting ideas.

  • ahh those two... I've banned them out of my mind ;)

bulling online... it doesn't really work. every "group" has it's idiots among them. just put them on your banned list and ignore them. Sooner or later they'll stop. either because there tired or they got kick out of YT for harassing other users.

  • I've just read my comment again and the English teacher in me has forced my hand in amending it. What I meant to say is: "When I say silence, I am referring to users including FakeSagan & TAA bullying people off YouTube because of conflicting ideas"

There, that's more like it :)

    -TTF

  • ^^

I just leave my comment with all it's errors at it is ;)

but what I did do is to look up statistics (from 1951 - 2001) for my hometown and I was completely right^^

In the last 50 years people 'without a religious confession' (what the rest of the world calls Atheists) have increased from 130.000 to 400.000 while Roman Catholics (the majority) have decreased from 1.3 mil to 760.000.

  • Good news all round I think

    -TTF

  • 1. If their ideas/beliefs are consistently proven to be dangerous, then, No.

    2. Only the theist who try to impose their beliefs on others.

    3. Because they had a sudden change of heart.

    4. In the next 10 years although weakened; christianty will still probably be the most prominent in the US.

    5. No. Because fighting/killing over imaginary characters is still a foolish pursuit.

    Katalyzt

  • Some good answers, thanks
