  • I don't see anything wrong with this ad. It never compares Binladen to Cleland, nor call Cleland unpatriotic.

  • the president's "vital" homeland security efforts... bwahahahaha

  • On this day, the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Saxby-Chambliss should look back with shame on his attack ad. You took an event which should have unified the country and dabased and corrupted it to be used for crass political propoganda. I pray that as you contemplate the events of 10 years ago you, will acknowledge that shame that you know lies hidden in your heart.

  • Typical Republican behavior.

  • @YJPY - It's an outrage to many because Cleland had lost three limbs in Vietnam. The ad was a blatant questioning of his patriotism.

  • Zaxby Patriot Act Chambliss

  • I'm a hard core liberal, and honestly, what's wrong with this? I heard about this ad and honestly it's just questioning Cleland's judgment not his patriotism. Cleland and Osama aren't even on the screen at the same time.

  • this is such a wannabe issue that isn't an issue. There is nothing here about relating Cleland to Osma or even saying he was unpatriotic. Whiners on the left just hate it when their leftist candidates lose and they feel it has to be because of dastardly evil republican tricks! Get over it!

  • Comment removed

  • This helped Chambliss win the election. But some people claim that it associated Cleland to osama and saddam which I do not see

  • I live in Georgia. Saxby Chambliss's ad strongly implied that Max Cleland was weak on defense against terrorism. Chambliss is someone who like Dick Cheney avoided all military service through various deferments. I would say he has little moral high ground from which to criticize another's commitment to defending the U.S., His ambitions exceed his honor.

  • Saxby Shameless is my nickname for him

  • This commercial still makes me sick. The way they smeared an honorable man like they did tells me Chambliss has no heart. To this day I still refer to him as Saxby the Skunk. BTW, the original commercial did have Bin Laden's & Cleland's photos together. It was changed later.

Cleland served honorably in Vietnam, continued his public service while running the V.A. under Carter, then as GA Secretary of State & US Senator. I'm proud to have voted for him, & will spit on Chambliss if given a chance.

  • funny how they neglect to mention he lost 3 of his limbs in vietnam.

  • It's not germane to the issue at hand. If being a veteran or an amputee made you a better legislator, the Capitol would be filled with wheelchairs.

  • do they pay you people to post things like this or do you do it for free?

  • I do it for free. You know where I could get paid to do it?

  • Oops, silly me! I asked you "You know where I could get paid to do it?" I forgot that the people that posted this video - "So This is Washington" -- work out of the basement of the Democratic National Committee in Washington, D.C.! THEY get paid to do it!

Unlike Democrats, I'm not making that up. ABC News' Brian Ross actually went to the DNC basement where they have interns monitoring this account. Google it.

  • rove is evil, and a sick bastard.

  • we make the best decision we can given the circumstances. even when we go against our natural instincts, anyone with half a conscience will do the best they can. we elect people in good faith that it's expected. HOWEVER! there is absolutely no call, no matter what someone has said or done, to be so hatefully assaulted as in this ad. we all make mistakes. but there is no excuse for this . i salute this patriot regardless of his politics, he has paid a price far greater than can be repaid to him.

  • propaganda! this man is a true patriot and was knock down by the bush administration, LAME!

  • Don't let Chambliss win any more re-elections. What he allowed in this ad is distasteful.

It shows pictures of dictators and terrorist to play on people's fear followed by Cheland being pointed out as the problem who won't deal with the fear. This is the worst kind of demagoguery to use against someone. And it's is a terrible way lose the senate as a danger to ones country when that person has given so much.

Why do people keep voting these people in? Keep them out. Don't forget.

  • Stay classy, Republicans!

  • @ex0rdium Is that possible? After all the lies they have spun out of straw, I don't think they have it in them. Republicans have situational ethics down pat.

  • Why is everyone getting their panties in a bunch over this ad? Yes, it's idiotic, but it's typical for the GOP nowadays. And where did he say Cleland was unpatriotic anywhere in the ad?? I don't see it! Maybe Chambliss thinks Cleland is unpatriotic, or maybe he doesn't. He certainly doesn't give it away here. Don't put words in people's mouths, Left or Right.

  • By pointing out that Cleland oted against such rubbish like the Patriot Act implies being unpatriotic. This legislation is the most unconstitutional and anti-American garbage eer assembled. Even John Ashcroft was unwilling to sign off on it, which ultimately led to his forced resignation. Saxby Chambliss is the worst form of human garbage and there is most certainly a spcial place in hell for him and people like him, if such a place does exist.

  • Ashcroft was against the patriot act??? When? I always got the impression he was a huge supporter. I distinctly remember him on camera saying that civil liberties defenders who object to the Patriot Act "Only aid the terrorists." Plus, didn't a draft copy of Patriot Act II come out of the Justice Dept., before it was killed and never got into Congress?

  • Ashcroft's position on the Patriot Act, like Ashcroft in general, is complicated. He was opposed to it on a constitutionality basis. He refused to sign off on it originally. While he was undergoing surgery, he abdicated power of the offic to James Comey, his chief deputy. Comey vehemently opposed it and refused to sign off on it. Alberto Gonzalez and Andrew Card tried to get Ashcroft to sign off while he was recuperating from surgery. He wouldn't. Later on, he did. to be continued...

  • When Ashcroft returned to head the Justice Dept after recuperation from surgery, he signed off on it out of " loyalty " to Bush. After he resigned in 2005, he claimed that he was opposed to it in principle because of the provisions that allowed warrantless wiretaps and recalled being intimidated by Gonzalez and Card while in the hospital and James Comey showing up to forcefully remove Card and Gonzalez from the room. This was why Gonzalez resigned as attorney general and aoid criminal charges.

  • What has Obama done to repeal the patriot act?

  • Obama has actually actively extended some of the sunset provisions of the patriot act...like the warrentless spying on anyone at all, whether or not they're a suspect of anything. this ad is disgusting, but dems aren't a hell of a lot better than republicans. as a gay guy who's protested these wars since they started, I have to say I'm not too impressed. I just vote green, if at all, now.

  • Dog whistle politics surely works on you.

  • A proven coward (Chambliss) has no business ridiculuing the "courage" of a Vietnam vet.

    See-ayz vous?

  • This ad didn't call Cleland patriotic. It didn't come close.

I think it wouldn't be a stretch to say that the caption of this video is a lie.

  • A draft-dodger should not be questioning a Vietnam vet's commitment to "homeland security." Gettez vous?

  • Your response has nothing to do with my point. Please put some thought into what you write.

  • over-rider has been overridden. Therefore, the only tactic left was ad hominem attack.

This is a typical response of a John Boehner/Chambliss type; this ilk is so ashamed of its own shrinking behavior that it resorts to what is called "Reaction Formation."

  • You know, I think I could write "Toasters are tasty" as my response to this, and it wouldn't change a word of whatever nonsensical response you'll come up with next.

  • Thats it????? All this time i never looked this video up. This is the 'Unpatriotic' ad?? Wow, liberals are such fucking scumbag liars.

  • Yeah, Republicans would never air ads attacking the courage of a Vietnam veteran, attack the faith of a devout Christian, or accuse our next President of being a radical Muslim terrorist planted here by al Qaeda so that total annihilation of this great country can occur, have they? Please. Look in the mirror.

  • In this case they didnt. So if you see me commenting on a 'swift boat' ad feel free to get on your soapbox.

  • Rachel Maddow in mid-October '09 went after Tim Phillips of Americans For Prosperity on her show and mentioned this ad b/c he was co-managing Chambliss' campaign at the time. She retold the worn-out lie that a photo of Cleland was "juxtaposed" with that of bin Laden.

She also told him "There's a reason why this ad is so notorious seven years later." That's true, and the reason is DEMOCRATS KEEP LYING ABOUT IT!

  • @LNSmithee No they don't. The ad put Cleland's picture in the same ad as Osama bin Laden and claimed Cleland voted against Bush's requests. His votes were on procedural points because he had questions regarding the trampling of the Constitution. In 20/20 hindsight, he was right to have some questions.

  • all this ad says is that this guy would make a terrible leader, not that he is unpatriotic.

  • Hysterical.

There isn't even a word that sounds like patriotism there.

  • LOL. WHAT???

How the heck does anyone pull patriotism out of this??

  • The video doesn't challenge Cleland's patriotism, it challenges Cleland's voting record and Cleland's account of that voting record. It uses the words "courage" and "misleading." Not a blip that a reasonable person could say references Cleland's "patriotism."

  • maybe saxby did not know that after fighting AGAINST a department of homeland security, President Bush finally created it but with a little twist, that the department's employees would not have civil service protection, and the dems are trapped since civil service exams is a loyal constituecies of the democratic party and the democrats in the senate vote against the legislation...max cleland was one of them and so that means that he is not interested in the security of the american people

  • this is one of the worst attack ads i've ever seen...but of course, people are dumb enoguht to buy this right-wing propaganda

  • "one of the worst attack ads i've ever seen"

Soooooooo, stating the fact that Cleland voted against something 11 times is the worst attack ad you've ever seen. Got it.

Unrelated Q here: Are you a liberal? lol

  • I never understood why Cleland didn't counter this with an ad showing his patriotic background, and calling Chambliss out as a coward.

  • Saxby Chamblis dodged the draft from 1961 until whenever his first child was born--1968?

Since the beginning of time, cravens have been cheerleading others who fight and die.

Nothing has changed, from W Bush, Cheney

to Ronald Reagan and LBJ. Amazingly,

    Nixon served.

  • Well, Bush Sr. Served, and Clinton didn't, and they both (arguably) made good military decisions.

Still, your point is correct about these cravens. I think Jesse Ventura (former Navy SEAL) calls these people "chicken hawks". Chicken when it comes time to fight, but a hawk when it's time for others to fight for them.

  • Clinton, as opposed to Limbaugh, Michael Medved, Michael Savage, William Bennett, Bill Kristol, Jeb Bush.............was AGAINST the Vietnam War at the time and, therefore, is NOT a chickenhawk.

  • I wasn't actually comparing Clinton (or Bush Sr.) to the chickenhawks. Just that others like Chambliss, Limbaugh, Cheney, Bush, etc. all never came close to serving, or if they did, not within a thousand miles of combat. But they are more than happy to talk tough and send troops off to wars that never end. I think that's what Ventura meant, and I agree.

Plenty more examples of combat veterans against war than just Ventura and Cleland: Hagel, Bacevich, Kerry, Martin, Murphy, etc.

  • Fair enough, zen. And Clinton, after Vietnam, became a person without standards, amoral in his own right: Whitewater, reversal of support for gays, Al Gore's huge vivisection initiative, the seamy personal behavior, the treatment of Socks The Cat et al.

  • Just a draft dodger.

  • Yesh.

  • Voting against Bush is almost always a virtue and it saddens me that the people of Georgia can't realize that.

  • So the ad states that Cleland doesn't always support George W. Bush, despite Cleland's statements to the contrary.

Cleland supporters argue that the ad impugns Cleland of being unpatriotic.

Does this mean that Democrats think one must support George W. Bush to actually be patriotic?

  • Wouldn't be the first time a Republican draft dodger attacked a real decorated war hero.

Republicans are cowardly pieces of shit.

  • Dear RepubliC*NTS: In the LAST 2 National Elections ('06 & '08), the Democrats in the US Senate & US House picked up (at LEAST) 54 ADDITIONAL seats. I suppose that has NOTHING to do with W's & Cheney's decisions, deceit, despair, division & lack of leadership. The "R" party thinks it's just "a COINCIDENCE." What a frikkin joke. Wake up before you embarrassingly lose even more seats in 2010. Aren't you RED enough in the face after taking such BAD beatings in'06 & '08? LOL! Regards, R. Limbaugh

  • If you can't condemn an opponent for his voting record not matching his rhetoric, then what can you do? There isn't a trace of slandering Cleland's considerable patriotism anywhere. The ad questioned the courage of his spoken convictions, which deserved questioning since he said one thing and did another.

  • Us liberals are poor losers because nut jobs like you have ruined this county. Economy - check. World relations - check. Blatantly breaking the law in order to start a war in effort to overshadow your Dad - check. Yup, I will be a poor loser as long as folks like this old school hillbilly continue to get elected. However, after taking another look at who SMOKED your presidential candidate, I do feel better about where this country is going. Keep up the good work... shoot for 42 seats next time.

  • Generally "liberals" serve, from Charles Rangel to Patrick Murphy-D PA. "Conserves" who conserve nothing but their own yellow, pathetic selves, rarely serve--from Limbaugh, Beck and O'Reilly to Cheney, Rove and Chambliss.

  • Lintening to Rush Limbaugh is like asking a Ford car salesman what he thinks of Toyota....you are guaranteed to get a one-sided story.

  • Knowing this, fair-57!

  • "Lintening to Rush Limbaugh is like asking a Ford car salesman what he thinks of Toyota....you are guaranteed to get a one-sided story."

So can you point out an example of where Limbaugh for instance is wrong about something?

  • Yeah, he accused Michael J. Fox of faking his Parkinson's disease. That's certainly wrong, isn't it? Oh, and I'm going to respond to what I know is going through your head: medical experts did in fact say that Fox was not faking at all. Rush Limbaugh is a disgusting, horrible man who can do nothing but tear honest people down. Oh, and he did call John McCain smart for picking Palin, so there's another thing that he was wrong about. Doubt it? Just search YouTube for the VP debate.

  • Your information is wrong. Limbaugh did not say Fox was faking his disease at all. He said he appeared that he did not take his medication, or over-medicated for the commercial he appeared in. Fox later admitted that it was true. Limbaugh was right. Media Matters took Limbaugh out of context to create a controversy, which is what they do.

  • "he accused Michael J. Fox of faking his Parkinson's disease"

No he didn't. He suggested that Fox selectively didn't take his medication, in a political environment, to make it appear that only democrats care about cures for disease. Turned out as Stubbynuggs says, Rush was correct, per Fox's own admission.

Sooo, again, I'm willing to listen if you can point out something horrible or blatantly wrong Rush Limbaugh has done.

    ....

  • Actually, Limbaugh said that Fox was either off his meds or faking it. Fox went on CBS News and said that neither was true; he had slightly overmedicated himself to show the effects. Rush realized he was wrong and actually apologized for what he said, something he hardly ever does. So stubbynuggs and sailcats, you are wrong.

  • FFtM, I'm a little confused as to how you come to the conclusion that I'm wrong.

The only substantive difference between what I posted and what you posted, is that I simply conveyed the fact that Rush first speculated that Fox didn't take his medication, and you said Fox admitted that he overmedicated.

The result is the same, and both statements appear to me to be factual. The fact that Rush picked up on something that wasn't above-board is obvious.

So again, how exactly am I wrong?

  • ...otherwise it sounds like bigotry to call someone disgusting/horrible without justification.

also you said, "he did call John McCain smart for picking Palin, so there's another thing that he was wrong about."

lol well Palin was one of the few bright spots in McCain's campaign. She's only one of the most successful governors in the US. lol McCain lost b/c he can't communicate or take a conservative stand.

Just b/c you don't like conservativism doesn't mean Rush or Palin are wrong. lol

  • I don't dislike conservatism. There are elements of it with which I can agree. But let's see...Rush Limbaugh did prescription drugs illegally, referred to soldiers are "phony" and referred to Barack Obama as a "Magic Negro", and he also said that he wants Obama to fail. My opposition to Rush Limbaugh is his hypocrisy. When Bush was in office, he would blast people for criticizing him, as it was disrespectful. Now he goes around saying he hopes Obama will fail, calling him a Negro? Disgusting.

  • Get, you'd do better not to get info from a left-biased media:

He did drugs b/c he was on prescription & became addicted. Unfortunate but many get in the same situation.

He did NOT refer to troops as phony. Transcript is on his site. He's the biggest supporter of our troops.

Magic Negro came from an LA Times black columnist... Rush just satirizes it.

As said before, he wants destructive policies to fail. Obama embraces these.

He's not hypocritical. Just listen to him, not the media.

  • Unfortunately, I have listened to him. I've heard him rudely insult well-meaning people, I've heard him use his radio show to promote conservative propoganda, and it made me sick to my stomach. I have no problem with conservatism. I just want it to be respectful conservatism. And while I do like Keith Olbermann, I can acknowledge that he does not practice respectul liberalism. Why do we let these people get involved in politics? I respect your viewpoints, and people like this split people apart.

  • Keep in mind, Limbaugh is highly satirical. Half the time he's purposefully saying off the wall things. To understand what he's saying it takes a couple weeks of listening.

But to the point of what he says, say about Pelosi, Reid, etc... yeah they're just power mongers, coupled with either foolishness or deceit. Sorry, it's true. For people like this Rush rightly fires with both barrels.

Civil debate is great, but in the end a resolute stand by our principles trumps niceness any day.

  • "Generally liberals serve, [conservatives] ...rarely serve."

I think you should examine what "serve" means to you. If it means taking money from achievers & giving it to non-achievers so they'll vote democrat, then yes liberals "serve" well!

Check out some of the studies showing conservatives are significantly more charitable, giving, generous with their OWN money. Liberals generally like to give others' money away.

    That's not service.

  • We are talking military service, manng. You draft-dodging or service-avoiding blowhards are legendary:

W Bush, Jeb Bush, Neil Bush, Marvin Bush, Cheney, Rove, Boehner, Santorum, Pat Toomey,

Ronald Reagan, John Wayne, Feith, Wolfowitz, Perle, Bill Kristol, O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Savage, Mike Gallagher, Wm. Bennett, Prager, Medved, Hewitt, Dennis Miller, Malzberg, Hannity, Michael Reagan, John Gibson, Jason Davis, Levin, et al have one thing in common.

    Yellow. Cowards. Loudmouths.

  • lumpagogo, ok military service is one way to serve, and an honorable one. But not the only honorable service, and not for everyone.

The real service we should all be more concerned about is that of our elected leaders, not military service. The military is in pretty good shape but the tops of all 3 of our govt branches are NOT serving The People. They're wielding POWER over the People which is contrary to our founding principles.

They're doing it with liberalism, big govt, & vote buying.

  • sailcat-77 Sunset Strip:

War cowards as yellow as a Chinese marshmellow should not be in government: No Rudi The Doodie, no Sammy (Soft) Brownback,

    no Mike (Big Wife) Huckabee.

Big Govt. = Ronald (Big Debt) Reagan and The Bush/Clinton Clique. These individs love Big Immigratiion same as CAIR and La Raza do.

Stop the world and let me off; will you help me, sailcat?

  • Reagan served.

  • They gave him an army shirt while he still made movies; that was our Ronnie, fake and phony from the day he started pontificating--1930s.

  • "Blatantly breaking the law in order to start a war in effort to overshadow your Dad"

    What law was that Joe?

Have you read UN resolution 1441?

  • MAY have been cutting edge then--would be nothing now. The 2008 Minnesota Senate Race (and subsequent recount) was one of the meanest yet.

  • i wouldn't put it that high. one candidate, mind you, completely withdrew all negative ads.

  • Pffft this seems as if the story was big as an elephant but now after seeing it, this is smaller than a mosquito!

Who blows these boring things up?! I wonder how anyone can become erect about this.

  • Fair and square my ass.

  • Living in Georgia, I've heard about this commercial a lot but have never seen it. I was under the impression that Cleland's face either morphed into Osama's or that Cleland's picture was simultaneously flanked by a picture of Osama bin Ladin and Saddam Hussein. But this, this is just not a big deal. Sorry. I fail to see the big controversy on this one. They're not even on the screen at the same exact time.

  • Chicken Hawk Chambliss for Senate!

Hope the runoff sees you off douchebag.

  • i have never seen anything wrong with this ad, not at the election nor now. the people of the greatest state also agreeded with me on this one because they voted for saxby

  • Nothing wrong with this ad.

  • Saxby Chambliss lies. He opens his mouth and lies fall out. I'm just sorry that Max Cleland was his target. True American grit as evidenced by Max Cleland. An airbag with lots of bluster as evidenced by Chambliss. I hope Martin cleans Chambliss' clock in the runoff.

  • All veterans should stand up and support Martin for Senate -- after what Chambliss did to a triple amputee veteran -- to do less is shameful.

  • Seems to me, both sides are being disingenuous. One cannot blame 527's terrible ads on candidates since they are not connected. If one does, then both Republicans AND Democrats are to be blamced, since both have 527's that support the candidate of their choice.

Chambliss never said Cleland was not patriotic, never. A 527 may have, but NOT Chambliss.

The people are tiring of guilt by association which Obama derided as well! If association is OK then lets talk more about Ayers & numerous others!

  • Regardless of party...this is disgusting.

The Republicans are the party of the Military, or isnt the perception? And this scum has the nerve to link Cleland to Bin Laden even though hes a triple amputee????

I hope to God this fucker loses his seat

  • You're wrong. Worse, you're lying. Watch the ad again please, and tell me when and how Cleland is being "linked" to Bin Laden.

The ad is truthful. You should consider that approach.

  • Water under the bridge I suppose?

After all which party is the one that will soon control the White House and both houses of Congress.

And regardles...you don't see ANYTHING wrong that: Chambliss used Patriotism as a political tool? He attacked a triple amputee as unpatriotic? If you are a Republican then you're the type of person that gives the paty a bad name

  • Gooooo Saxby... I will be here making fun of you when martin loses. He already lost by 3 percent and now with the OBAMA turnout gone Chambliss has this locked up!!! GO Saxby!!!

  • I'm a veteran and I will be voting for Martin simple because Chambliss hates the troops. You can't support the troops and support Chambliss, if you vote for him you are against the troops.

  • Chambliss has got to go. This is truly disgusting to see a Vietnam veteran paired with terrorists. The sad fact: this works to convince many voters who are rather stupid.

  • Met Max at a falcons game and he is an awesome guy...Chambliss has no heart

  • Georgia, please kick this scumfuck out of office.

  • Georgia, please show up. Get him out. Chambliss did not serve in Vietnam and had the nerve to basically say Cleland does not care about Homeland Security. He is a liar and a fraud. I voted against Elizabeth Dole and this was a seat the Republicans kept 30 years at a time (Jesse Helms held it until he retired). Whether P.E. Obama shows up or not to campaign (he's busy), please vote one more time this year. You can do it.

  • Georgia, if we in NC can get DOLE out of office, you guys can get this disgusting ass out too! PLEASE.

  • HECK YEAH!!!

  • Saxby Chambliss, I hope your mother is not alive to see what a disappointment you are.

  • What are you talking about??? What about Martin being the only person who voted to make selling drugs near schools not a felony!

  • Chambliss said THIS ad was a "myth" on Hannity & Colmes on Nov 13,2008. He lies about American hero Max Cleland then lies about lying. Wake up Georgia, elect Jim Martin and say no to the politics of hate & divisiveness (and lying).

  • Pairing Cleland with terrorists is bad. What's worse, the ad's creators know damn well that most voters are too ignorant or lazy to understand exactly what is contained in the measures Cleland rejected. Doesn't really matter. Bush good, terror bad.

  • On Dec. 2 lets fire this this five deferment getting, chicken hawk piece of shit.

  • wow

  • I'm ashamed to say that this man is my senator. This is dirty politics at it's finest.

  • PLEASE get this asshole (Chambliss) out of office Georgia. Do the right thing.

  • what an utter arsehole you are. and increasingly irrelevant as the far right hate community get increasingly marginalised. enjoy the next four years fuckwit!

  • Six years later, Chambliss STILL doesn't have the courage to run an ad based on his OWN achievements. He still runs ads attacking an opponent who had the REAL courage to serve this great country. Vote for a man who DESERVES public office. Vote Martin.

  • How can the Republicans claim to be the party of "values"?

  • Saxby, you're FIRED!

  • The very fact that we have a Constitution that limits the powers of the government makes us a constitutional republic state. Both this and the Bill of Rights cannot be negated by the majority, so that denies our ability to be a democracy.

  • Amen for that.

  • Well, technically speaking, if there's enough of a majority opinion to get 2/3 of both the senate and the house and then got 3/4 of all the states the bill of rights can be negated. Any part of the constitution can be negated. It's just unreasonable to think that certain parts would be negated. But I take your point, the difficulty of changing the constitution places significant binding limitations on governmental actions and majority rule.

  • What is wrong with this ad?

I'm serious. Chambliss was for the Patriot Act and Cleland was against it. In 2002 this was a big issue. Isn't that what elections are supposed to be decided on, isssues? Unfortunately for Cleland in 2002, more people from Georgia agreed with Chambliss.

It is an aggressive ad but nowhere, I repeat, nowhere does it question his patriotism or compare him to Bin Laden. That is just a myth. Watch the ad again.

  • Im live in Georgia and know first hand that most people wont elect someone because they agree with what they have done, they will vote for them because they are labeled republican. However this can be said for the whole country and for all political parties.

  • I find it laughable that a certifiable draft dodger like Chambliss would smear a war hero Max Cleland

  • It takes a lot of gall, that is for sure.

  • Max is an American HERO distinguished by exceptional courage and nobility. Only the scum of Satan (Chambliss) could approve of this ad.

  • I'm a Democrat, I voted for Gore, Kerry and I'll vote for Obama, but to be perfectly honest I think people have blown this ad out of proportion. I've heard people say that Cleland is called unpatriotic and that he is 'morphed' from a pic of Bin Laden. Neither is true. It shows bad guys on a page and then displays Cleland's voting record stating that he doesn't 'have the courage to lead'. There's NO mention of patriotism and no morphing. Cleland isn't even shown in the same frame with bad guys.

  • Voceangeli, it wasn't just this ad. 527 groups ran ads questioning whether or not Max Cleland was relly a hero because of how he lost his limbs. He picked up a granade that fell from another man's vest and it exploded because the pin dislodged. So 527 groups said that he wasn't a war hero. And other 527 groups did run ads that morphed bin Laden and Max Cleland. John McCain condemned such ads, now he's campaigning for Saxby Chambliss. Do the right thing, vote this slimeball out!!!

  • This ad made me sick and makes me wonder how Chambliss could ever win. I hope Jim Martin knocks Saxby's political conk off.

  • republicans are traitors.

  • God, this is disgusting. I live in NJ now but lived in GA when I was younger. I recall Max Cleland speaking at my high school in Baldwin Co. in the early 90s, when he was Secretary of State. He was likable and inspiring. How do you call a man who lost THREE LIMBS in Vietnam a coward? Saxby Chambliss isn't fit to wear a flag pin, much less be a Senator. That's why this Jersey girl contributed $500 to Jim Martin's campaign this week. Let's see Saxby Chambliss get a good old fashioned ass-whoopin'.

  • If i voted against cleland,i would kill myself slowly.

  • Here is what John McCain said about the attack advertisement against Cleland: "it's worse than disgraceful, it's reprehensible." Republican senator Chuck Hagel said that the advertisements were "beyond offensive to me."

Fortunately, I live in Chambliss's district and I will have the opportunity to vote for his opponent in November.

  • Great job attacking my choice of words (I'm not the only one who refers to the entire state as a "district" for statewide elections) while ignoring the comments I quoted from republicans McCain and Hagel condemning the ad. That'll show them "dumb-o-crats," as you call them.

  • Actually, as a former Congressman, Chambliss does have a "district", or used to - Georgia's Eighth, currently represented by Democrat Jim Marshall.

So it's actually reasonable to say you live in Chambliss' "district", if you live in GA-08.

  • Incidentally, 77abcdef77, we ARE a democracy. A democracy is ANY political system where power is exercised by the people, either through public ballot (direct, not used to govern any country in the world), or through freely elected officials (representative, used throughout the free world). That's the accepted definition from political scientists, who define these terms; the OED agrees. The irony here is that you call other people dumb.

  • Sorry - the USA is technically a constitutional republic, NOT a true democracy. You see, we have people called representatives who vote on laws, etc. in our place hence the name. But I like how you made up your own definition for "democracy".

I will blame your government indoctrinated education for that one, however.

Lastly, all will be forgiven if you can name who said this in response to the question, What kind of government do we have, sir? "A REPUBLIC, madam, if you can keep it."

  • The United States is a legal corporation, running parallel to the Republic established in the Constitution. This is how the 17th amendment stands un-ratified.

Our Senators: Chambliss, McCain, Obama, Isackson, have sold that corporation and members thereof(you and me?) to international interests.

  • Sorry 77... A republic is a governmental structure based upon a democratic philosophy of government. When Prisident Bush refers to Democracies around the world the world I'm sure he is including the United States. To nit-pick the denotative definition of democracy makes one wonder what your attitude is towards gorvernment by the poople.

  • Incidentally, perhaps you should learn to read more carefully. "The accepted definition from poltiical scientists" includes lots of professors at public and private university, who have published in peer-reviewed publications like the "Journal of Democracy." Moreover, the OED is the Oxford English Dictionary. I don't make up their definition.

And Franklin is the answer you want. He's right. We're a republic (no hereditary monarchy) AND a democracy, by the present use of the terms.

  • The ads where shameful but Saxby won with them. I think the voters are shameful for allowing politicians of all stripes conduct these type of campaigns and then reward them by voting for them. We the people have got to take an interest in our candidates and the election. Does platform even matter any more?

  • Max Cleland time was up! Even Democrats voted against him and Roy king Barnes one of Georgia's worse governors. The Georgia Democratic party is still in shambles after 6 years of constant defeats. Jim Martin is going to be defeated by a huge margin. I predict 57% 40% and the 3rd party takes the rest.

  • Your on crack. This was one of the most vile ads ever run. Worse it was run by a draft dodger against a true American hero. Don't be surprised if Senator Shameless gets shown the door come November...

  • The only people who like Saxby are white trash who don't know anything about the economy....

but hey, as long as I can bring my gun anywhere, I should vote for him, right?

funny thing is, John McCain called this ad "worse than disgraceful." oh, the irony

  • he's calling Cleeland uncourageous, which is hilarious because Cleeland is a triple amputee vietnam vet while Saxby is a draft dodger....

  • SoThisIsWashington:

Pardon me for actually paying attention to the ad, but WHERE does it claim that Cleland is "unpatriotic" ? It does not even HINT such a thing!

The ad is mainly factual depicting Cleland's voting record. Most liberals can dish criticism in mass quantity, but can't take even factual criticism. Grow up.

  • Saxby Chambliss is a coward douchebag who got out of going to Vietnam. Please vote against his lame ass in November and elect Jim Martin for U.S. Senate and remove this scumbag.

  • How is a Vietnam veteran who lost both his legs, and an arm unpatriotic? Well...shows you that the Republican smear machine doesn't have any limit. Just ask John Kerry.

  • Where in the ad does it call Cleland unpatriotic? Give me the time index.

John Kerry testified in 1972 that he and other Vietnam vets (and, more specifically, his boat crew) frequently committed war crimes. If he was telling the truth, that makes him a war criminal. If he was lying, that makes him a perjuror and a traitor.

So...what part of him not ebing fit to be President would be a smear?

  • not having been walked in those shoes and having taken a life and seeing fellow soldiers have their lives taken , and knowning at any moment your could be taken. That your infant child would not know who you were , things like that MOTHERFUCKER , sometimes when under pressure , nevermind you want get it. And then bush fled from the air nation guard , damn thats low

  • Thanks for the insult, it makes your point SO much stronger.

Your profile says you're 28. That means you know exactly squat about what it was like to be a soldier in the Vietnam War.

Did you know, BTW, that investigators found that the "war criminals" Kerry was testifying about turne dout to be liars who had never gone to Vietnam? But hey, he's a great guy, right?

Are you claiming you committed atrocities in Afghanistan or the Iraq War? I suspect you're just another wannabe.

  • No Shame.

  • Max Cleland is a genuine hero who's always had the guts to stick up for what's right. What a shameful attack on a true American patriot.

  • Pairing Cleland with Saddam and Osama kinda sends the message that he's unpatriotic, actually -- even if, like a typical chickenhawk, they don't have the balls to come out and say it.

  • And in what alternate universe is Max Cleland, a decorated Vietnam veteran who is crippled because of wounds received in that war, a "pinko commie"? Supporting nastiness with stupidity is not the moral way, but it sure is the contemporary Republican way...

  • I like Max, I wished he run again, he would have a good chance of getting Chambliss of his Senate Seat. Chambliss has NEVER done one thing in Congress to help the people of Georgia.

    DALE CARDWELL 08

  • I'd let another 9/11 happen if it would eliminate the people of Georgia who were stupid and ignorant enough to oust a hero like Max Cleland in favor of an armchair coward like Saxby Chambliss. All the people who voted for Max Cleland would be spared. Even that asshole Zell Miller.

  • this was all due to Bush politicizing 911. Back when he had high approval ratings that were artificially inflated because emotions ran so high after we were attacked. He was given the opportunity to be a "uniter and not a divider" as he had promised.

All the republicans were 100% up his ass and never questioned him or his motives and it turned into another McCarthy era. Now the repub party has to pay just like they did in the 50's. So be it

  • I would consider this the moment when politics hit rock bottom: portraying a thrice amputated veteran as unpatriotic.
