Sorry, but you're confusing bandmembers there. The lead singer of this song (and most of ETH's songs) is Brian Buchanan, who was born in Ottawa, Ontario.
You're thinking of Craig Downie. While I don't know how long he lived there, he didn't have a Scottish accent when I met him (roughly 6 years ago).

@YogurtArchangel touche, I agree, personally I am offended by people calling the US "America" because Canada, Mexico, and Greenland are all techniccly part of the North American continent.
my grandpa requested that this song be played at his funeral so that night after the funeral when we where all sitting around drinking and remember him i played this song and everyone got up and danced.... you got your wish grandpa
this song exually is real. its a bout a friend of the band, who was very ill. and the dokers sayed that he woudent servive the night, he sayed he would sarvive the night, and the band members got some wiskey and talked and laughed al night. and the next morning there friend died.
allright people, i hope this settles the debate and that we can all agree this song is great, awesome, awesome, and great regardless of nationality issues XD
@Vampirehunterwarrior Aww, you were still right. To all of us Irish, Canada is part of America anyhow. After all, it's clearly not Africa, Europe, Asia or Australia and all that leaves is Antarctica and America.
Sad as this song is, it's beautiful how he lasted through the night just have that "one last drink" and go out with a bang, and lived a full life. Like the song says, he "never had a tear in his eye". Was this based off a true story?
@Jmuffinx3 Well sure John's dying but he's okay with it! As the song says he's "Had a life that's full" and "everyone's been good to [him]" so it's not sad for him! As for his friends, maybe it'd be sad but I think it would be less so because John didn't waste away or anything - he went out partying with everyone who loved him. It's touching and if I got the choice, I'd like to die like that.
@ghostdrummer16 Uhh...sort of yeah. The chorus is sung from the perspective of Old John who is dying. The verses are a kind of third person story of his last day. :)
This is fantastic. I wish I heard of these guys so much sooner.
