lol i renember playing this exact same game when i was like 5 and my grandpa had this (right now old and dead) computer and playing this until stage 2... damn it was good. i died so many times but the graphics and the music was awesome at that time.
How did you manage to run this game on DOSBox? I've tried several methods to run the game, including mounting the cue file on a virtual drive. If you could send me a PM telling me how to run the game, I'll really appreciate that a lot.
@ZOMGX3 Some people seem to have this problem with this game in particular. I'm not sure at all, but I might have had to burn the game on a real CD instead of mounting on a virtual drive. Anyway virtual drive or not, don't forget to mount CDROM like this : mount d: d:\ -t cdrom. From this point, if it doesn't work, send me a PM and I can try to remember as best as I can how I got it to work.
If anyone is running this on the DOSBOX I'd appreciate the help;
I'm running the game on Vista Home and the sound&speed (animation) seem to be just fine as long as I leave it, but as soon as I jump/run the sound gets choppy and the animation bogs down. Any general ideas as to what might be causing this?
I don't remember, but try going in the options in the main menu of the game, maybe you can change the controls there. You can't save, but there's a password system.
If you search on Google for Earthworm Jim passwords, you'll find some. You can input them in the main menu to unlock some Levels. If I remember correctly, the console versions didn't have this.
What DOSBox settings did you use to get that intro running smoothly, without skipping? I always keep having problems getting it to play right, even with the latest DOSBox available. VDMSound doesn't seem to want to run it at all.
My dream is that one day someone will add the Sega CD levels onto Can O Worms, with upgraded graphics, and add the cool extra colors and effects from the SNES version.
It wouldn't be bad, but I don't think we should expect that to happen. It would really be hard to do and any version of this game is still awesome either way.
No. If one version has better graphics or more levels than the other, i'd be pissed off. That's like saying the 32X version of Doom is good because it's Doom, disregard to the fact that the music sucks and half the levels are gone.
I get your point, I also prefer the best version of a game, but what I was trying to say is that even if it'd be good to get a "complete" version, none of them totally sucks, unlike Doom 32X, which is just missing too much. They feature good enough graphics, but SNES has more effects. CD versions have way better music, but the cartridges are acceptable. The new level and expanded levels of the Win95 standalone/Sega CD versions are desirable, but other versions have a lot/nearly all levels.
loved this game,i played the sega mega drive game.Had some real problems beating the underwater level because the glass hull always broke,but i got used to it and beated the game.Earthworm jim 2 is even better,also played on sega mega drive.
But are there any other worthy earthworm jim games?
There's Earthworm Jim: Menace 2 the Galaxy on the Game Boy Color and Earthworm Jim 3D which you mentioned. There are no other game than those yet, and they did not get the best reviews. I heard Interplay announced Earthworm Jim 4, over a year ago with few details, not even the console/computer on which it will be released, if released one day.
i loved this game.. I used to get insanely stuck on the 2nd bit of the 3rd level, 'down the tubes' really ruined the rest of the game for me as a kid haha... on the snes of course, if you ask me this version is a little too polished, plus the music volume smothers the sfx , and the controls must've been dog.
The SNES version had some awesome graphic tricks, with more colours than the Genesis version, and a cool lens flare effect on the sun in New Junk City, but sadly it disappeared on the PC version...
From what I've read, the PC version is essentially based on the Genesis version, but with some smoothing and better quality soundtrack. That might be why some SNES effects are missing.
This is really simple actually. I used DOSBox 0.72 to run the game and there is a capture movie function in this program which you can activate by pressing ctrl+alt+F5, it automatically outputs the results to an avi file.
When you start DOSBox, you should get two windows, one where you can enter commands and the status window. You need to be on the main window when you click the buttons, then you'll see that the status windows says "capturing video to capture\dosbox_001.avi". That's how you know that it's currently recording. When you're finished recording, you absolutely need to repress those buttons to stop recording or your video won't work. It'll be located in the capture subfolder where DOSBox is installed.
This version should have been on PlayStation and Sega Saturn.

marzsyndrome 2 years ago
To be honest, I don't remember, but I used DOSBox 0.72 and I probably used these settings (I only list those I think could be relevant):
frameskip=0
core=auto (you could also try dynamic)
cycles=max (you could also try auto)
sbtype=sb16
I didn't use VDMSound. If your comp is powerful enough, you should be able to run it smoothly by tweaking these settings.

I think that the whole can of worms is terrible because those people went and totally screwed up the engine and game that Shiny worked so hard on.
I bought this game and all it is is just the Super Nintendo version with CD music.
No special features at all.
It sucks.
