  • I absolutely adore this film it is without a doubt one of my favourite. Thank you so much Blacklily555

  • Thank you for putting this on here I saw the Ballet of this today and wanted to see the original film... wonderful you are a star xxxx

  • Back in about 1990, an Australian interviewer asked John Mills what was his favourite film of his prolific career and without hesitating, he replied: 'Hobsons Choice'. Mills regarded the earlier films of David Lean as his best work (Hobsons Choice, In which We serve etc) and he dismissed Lean's later epics (Dr Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia etc) as 'B-movies'.

  • Dear God,

Thank You for people like Blacklily555 who upload hard to find treasures so we can enjoy them and expose these classics to new generations. Please protect and keep Blacklily555 and the like from the devil YT delete squad.

    Amen

  • Charles Laughton is the greatest character actor of the 20th century or any other century. No one comes near to his genius and versatility.

  • a superb fim; thank You!

  • charles lawton is class thankyou x

  • Never heard of "hobson choice", I'll give it a try.

  • Oh, darling Blacklily555, thank you, thank you! I caught the last half hour of this film on Turner Classic Movies nearly two years ago and have been looking for it ever since! How utterly marvelous that you, o' considerate, lovely you, uploaded it when I had almost given up hope. You're such a somebody, such a contender! I'll still try to find some place to buy the movie but to be sure and certain, I'll enjoy it right here and now! Quick, someone fetch me a bowl of popcorn!

  • @Blackthorne369 - Such an ebullient thank you deserves a response and you are most welcome.

I understand how delightful it is when one finds a movie one has been looking for.

  • @Blackthorne369 - whitelilly555 would be me as well.

  • It makes me so angry this first bit. They do all the work and wait on him as servants, THEN he tells Maggie that she's too old to get married. All her wants is to keep the shop going and him to be waited on for the rest of his life and he dismisses her life like it's nothing. Nothing. In a few sentences he distroys her life all because he believes women are born to wait on men! And all his, "friends" believe the say way and run their households the same way. Pathetic.

  • A Great film.....also love " The Heiress", A Tale of Two Cities, The 400 Blows (french film), A Taste Of Honey, Mildred Pierce.

  • yo dude thanks i had to read this for homework and now i can watch it thanks mate youv saved me there

  • THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!! I've looked everywhere I could think online to find this movie. Love love love it!

  • I'm playing Vicky in a local production of this play in November - thank you so much for uploading, it's really helping me get to grips with the character x

  • @Sarahlou2485 And me! But in september! xx

  • Delightful! We read Hobson's Choice for our O level English 30 years ago and I fell in love with this play then. Thank you for uploading!

  • One of my five favorite movies of all time, along with another Charles Laughton's, "Ruggles of Redgap." I own them both. I haven't seen this for awhile and it's always a treat. Thank you for putting it up as my VCR broke. :) This and, "Swiss Family Robinson" are Sir JM's best.

  • I played Maggie at the age of 20 just 2years ago in a local production and loved every minute of it, thankyou so much for the upload. Charles Laughton is a legend! :) xx WELL BYE GUM!

  • Thank you, Thank you for uploading this. I wonder if you have the movie "Payment Deferred" 1932 with Charles Laughton. I saw it once years ago and would love to see it again.

  • Thank you so much for posting this most excellent movie with Laughton in arguably his best film role. From the very first scene he lets rip with all guns blazing. His northern accent is not convincingly affected - it is real. His people came from the East Coast of Yorkshire. I believe the story is set in Lamcashire - but then none of the other actors make much of an effort for authenticity so Charles probably felt free to keep his vowels flat and his r's unrolled.

  • @zthetha Because I'm American I get confused at all the various English accents. It bugs me as I watch a lot of English movies, etc. :) It's probably like our New York, Southern, etc. accents. You just know them having been raised in the country. Must be the same for you. :) Thanks for the background information. I enjoy that YT is worldwide and we get the benifit of hearing information like this from the people who live there and share it with us. Thanks Zthetha. :)

  • @Songsmirth Hi and thanks for you comment. The Yorkshire/Lancashire thing is very old - from the Was Of The Roses I guess. The guys from Yorkshire - called Tykes - are renown for their particular mix of generosity, meanness, arrogance and dry sense of humour - probably a bit like Texans in US. A further useless tit-bit of information - my cousin is married to Charles Laughton's great nephew so the name, if not the talent, lives on in her offspring.

  • @zthetha Hey Z. Thanks for explaining. It's interesting although I don't get the bit about the War of the Roses? Also fun to hear of someone related to Charels Laughton! Did he have a big family? Songs

  • I love it that "Vicky" is Prunella Scales (aka Sybil Fawlty)!

  • one of my top ten films.......................

  • Brilliant film not seen it for years, thanks for posting.

  • Cracking film, I haven't seen it in decades, such a treat. Thank you.

  • Thank you so very much!!!!

  • So grateful!

  • I LOVE this movie!!!! Thanks for posting Blacklily555
