Sorry for the long delay in this response. Scented the Bloodhound off ashes just to show they can do it as if it was an article of clothing. Scent is not destroyed until 36 to 3,600 degrees (per studies done in the Netherlands.)
You have to hunt them down. They are few and far between but in some ares there are some good ones. Try the finding them using the Internet. That's how I did it when I first got involved.
Hi Lindy, I am from Germany and I have a question: the hound gets something to eat from the person he has found as a reward. What is when this person is dead or gone away with a car... How can you motivate your dog? Thank you for this video!
Sorry for the long delay in this response. May have aleady replied but in case not....
The hound doesn't necessarily get the reward treat from the trail layer, usually from the handler. In this instance the trail layer wanted to give the hound the treat. This also helps when you are training a dog on the I.D. jump up.
wow what a demonstration of scent tracking...great music too....wish I could see them in action....in el paso....they used a bloodhound from La Tuna to track an Alzhiemer patient that was lost for 4 days (over the weekend)...(took em that long to finally figure to use tracking dog..) then the dog found the poor guy in 40 minutes....
unfortunately the poor man had passed...but had they used the dog first off they might have saved him...
Bloodhounds are indeed a great breed. I have a 2&1/2 year male named Wylie that is a people magnet. He stops traffic and so many people come up to him and want to pet him and comment about how beautiful he is.
Sory for the long delay in this response. Bloodhounds have trailing bred into them from several centuries to the present. Only thing is they have a fairly short life span (10,
11, and maybe 12 year in some cases) so you will want to begin training ASAP.
What kind of idiot places the scent article all over the k9's face in a plastic his guy is either a moron or his dog is retarded. I have handled a Bloodhound for several years and trained under some of the best trainers in the business and all the dog needs is just a wiff and will get the scent it's looking. if you smash the dogs face into the scent the dog will always be RIGHT in the dogs nose, whether it's the right "victim" or not.
It's a well known practice taught by not all but many instructors to make sure the dog has only the scent you are presenting. You can choose either method.
Glad to see that someone took the time to show what the BH can do. They should be used more at crime scenes. They are under utilized. I'm part of the rescue effort in FL for these dogs. I only have 4 now but have had 11 at one time. My partner has more. They are cute and cuddley when young but people must realize they grow up to be HUGE dogs that eat, slober, chew, and poop at lot. Great pets and best if you have a fenced yard. PLEASE adopt a hound or buy from breeders-NOT PUPPY MILLS-PET SHOP.
Agree. We are involved in finding homes here in Michigan for BHs that have been given up when they get big and powerful. They are not a low maintenance dog and people should read up on them before they decide they are ready to be owned by a Bloodhound. They, however are the most loveable 4 legged family member you can find.
Well, with the most olfactory (scent receptors) of any other breed they do get a long pretty well on the trail. Thanks for the compliment on the video.
I was eating a hot dog at the park and got attacked by a blood hound. I wouldnt say attacked he went for my hot dog. It was so funny. When he was running torwards me the theme for athletes came to mind. How cute!
Yes, they do drool but that helps activate the scent. I don't think they drool anymore than any other large breed dog but some Bloodhounds drool a bit more than others.
We also keep a slobber rag handy and have taught both Kali and now Jack to go get them for us. Enjoy your floppy eared sniffer as much as you can cause they are not with us nearly long enough.
I started her at 5 months as that is when I got her but she was socialized from very early on starting while in the litter. She is on her 412th trail at this time.
Possibly you can find a K-9 Search and Rescue group near you that has Bloodhounds. Otherwise, there are books and much on the Internet.
so how old was your bloodhound when i started training it? i have a 6 month old bloodhound. I like to jog every evening and i usually let my buddy go before me and my bloodhound will naturally follow him but when he gets tired i always end up carrying him home? is there places you can go for a dog and owner to learn the tracking skill?
Sorry I missed repling to your post. Private organizations are your best bet. Attending trailing seminars is also very necessary. You can become educated and make great inroads.
I like the fact I had to APPLY to purchase a puppy from the breeder. She talked with me for about an hour our first phone call. I say first, because there have been quite a few. The breeder was very thorough on her questions. She is going to pair hubby and I with a bloodhound that fits us, we will not pick the puppy. But, since she is the professional we are leaving it up to her. We did as much research to find the right breeder as we did to search for the right breed of dog for us.
I liked the video AND I like the music. We are on a waiting list of a breeder for a bloodhound. We are very excited. I think I'm too lazy to do mantrailing, but it sure does look like fun. :)
The Bloodhound is a great breed but not everyone should be owned by one. They are a high maintenance breed and are very powerful and can be very stubborn. Make sure you investigate with reputable breeders. Make sure it's the breed for you. I hope you find out it is the breed for you and you get your Bloodhound and remember, you must be willing to train them from an obedience standpoint. Who knows, you may even get into mantrailing as a sport.

I know you should start training as a puppy but is there a limit on how old a bloodhound is before its to late to train?
