Fairly accurate except for the info about addiction. I take high doses (Rx Xyrem for Narcolepsy) 2x a night and have never experienced any withdrawl. The pharm. company claims no withdrawl effects and has been confirmed by patients. Now, addiction will happen if the drug is taken continuously for a decent length of time and the widthdrawls (although not life threatening) are said to have some of the worst withdrawls symptoms of any drug and is suppose to go on for weeks.

I was prescribed Xyrem for insomnia. Best drug I have ever been given. It give you a great buzz, makes sex better, helps me sleep, really awesome. No adverse side effects, at all. I wouldn't even call it a drug. Alcohol is way worse side effect wise. It does take a while to get used to, kinda made me a little queezy at first. This stuff should not be illegal.

GHB has literally the same pharmacological effect that alcohol does-the only difference is that a) it's non-toxic (or rather, it doesn't affect the rest of your organs such as your liver in a toxic way), b) it has a shorter half-life, and c) you take it in pill form. It's also made naturally by your body-scary to think that under a stricter interpretation of the law, anyone could technically be busted for GHB possession :p

I never had any problems quitting GHB/GBL (which i used for many years, a few years back). What people for some reason don't seem to understand is that you have to come off it very, very slow. It really promotes creativity when creating music or writing lyrics + as an apridosiac it's incredible. Would only recommend it to grown up, responsible persons though.

Death on ghb (differently than for other drugs) is really RARE. The cases of death are not clear and it seems that it happened because of the assumption of other CNS suppressants at the same time.
Ultimately, GHB is an endogenous substance. Our body already knows GHB, because we have it naturally inside us. This makes this drug really different from other drugs.

If you had a bad experience in "treatment" it's because it was one patterned after the CULT of Scientology's "AA" or "NA," which have about a 25% success rate anyway. A real medical detox clinic will not use brainwashing and shame as tools. Unfortunately, most people pushed into "treatment" by the law are pushed into the cult versions.

If you are talking about the 12 step programs of AA and NA, they have nothing to do with Scientology's treatment programs. They are not affiliated with any religion either, although they encourage belief in a higher power/"God" of one's choosing (which makes them problematic for atheists and agnostics) to help cope with life.

Hi ZarathustrasCrown. I think there was case that set a precedent for that. Somebody sentenced to attend AA didn't want to go, and claimed it was unconstitutional because of the religion clause in the 1st Amendment. And he won. But they still send people to 12 Step programs when sentencing anyway, for some people who have been determined to have an alcoholism and/or addiction problem.
There are alternatives, such as something called "RR" (Rational Recovery).

I don't think I am an "addict/alcoholic" though, in the sense of the-rehab industries theories, of automatically being addicted to anything else that is mood altering, and also, I think I was self-medicating cyclothymia out of ignorance of my condition, and fell into a vicious cycle when opiate tolerance set in.

I agree with you about all that BTW. I called a detox ctr to get a bed when I was trying to get off of smack once, and they told me not to stop using before I went in! Of course that precaution probably wasn't necessary in my case, as opiate withdrawals are very rarely fatal, even if they are extremely unpleasant (one feels like they are dying if its as severe as my case was).
I've seen people having seizures before from alcohol withdrawal. With few exceptions, its best to be under medical supervision when going through a withdrawal from drugs that cause CNS depression. Benzos, booze, barbs, etc.
Unless things have changed, just about every medical detox in the USA introduces people to 12 Step programs. I suspect the thinking is, its a cheap support group system for maintenance after they are sent home (everybody donates a buck for the one hour rental where they hold the meetings), and they justify doing it cuz of success rate you mentioned earlier. The success rate isn't all that impressive for complete abstinence over a year, but its about the only thing WITH a success rate.
Please note my previous comment was just an observation, I am not making an argument for or against the practice. I still don't think the AA (and its 12 Step cousins like NA) are cults, I think it works for people who already hold some kind of religious or spiritual belief system, and really have a desire not to use anymore.

Your criteria for what constitutes brainwashing and who has a small mind is obviously rather broad, since the vast majority of humanity holds some kind of religious and/or spiritual belief system. Its false if speaking in absolutes, which I wasn't (figure of speech). Other programs have success rates, but they are negligible in comparison. Its possible I am misinformed, if you have proof of a comparable success rate I will be happy to bookmark it. Now, its possible another program could have a better success rate quantitatively, but hasn't been properly evaluated via exposure to the general public because of the practice of sending people to 12 step programs(as I previously mentioned).
They had to get me up to 90mgs of methadone to stop the withdrawals from heroin, when I tried that route Thankfully I didn't stay on the methadone long, thats even harder to kick than smack. I've been clean a number of years from opiates. If I ever relapsed and got a habit again, I would go for the buprenorphine treatment (wasn't approved back then), stuff sounds interesting with the agonist AND antagonist properties.
I had a very bad smack habbit and kicked the junk via suboxone, a form of buprenorphine. It worked from the 1st dose. It's a miracle drug! I had also a bad addiction to alcohol, sub killed my desire to drink as well. With suboxone I was able to kill 2 very bad birds with one stone! My suboxone doc retired, so I talked to my family doc, he agreed to take over and has decided to keep me on it indefinitely. It has changed my quality of life from night to day! Ive been on sub 4yrs/ no side effects!

I was prescribed Xyrem for insomnia. Best drug I have ever been given. It give you a great buzz, makes sex better, helps me sleep, really awesome. No adverse side effects, at all. I wouldn't even call it a drug. Alcohol is way worse side effect wise. It does take a while to get used to, kinda made me a little queezy at first. This stuff should not be illegal.

GHB has literally the same pharmacological effect that alcohol does-the only difference is that a) it's non-toxic (or rather, it doesn't affect the rest of your organs such as your liver in a toxic way), b) it has a shorter half-life, and c) you take it in pill form. It's also made naturally by your body-scary to think that under a stricter interpretation of the law, anyone could technically be busted for GHB possession :p

I never had any problems quitting GHB/GBL (which i used for many years, a few years back). What people for some reason don't seem to understand is that you have to come off it very, very slow. It really promotes creativity when creating music or writing lyrics + as an apridosiac it's incredible. Would only recommend it to grown up, responsible persons though.

Believe me after a year i was taking up to 150ml a day for 3 years ...it was ugly i was so addicted...crazy..couldn'stop...couldn't work..it wrecked my life i spent a week to desintox....didn't work...it'ts been a year i've quit but almost everyday i want to...beware

"Ghb coma" doesn't exist: it's just the deepest level of sleep, which is very different from coma, where you brain isn't actually oxigenated. On ghb your brain is enough oxygenated.

GHB is none toxic, you'd die of sodium poisoning before any effects of the GHB.
It induces slow wave sleep, the deepest level, and the most healthy and benificial part of sleep, when your body is regenerating and releasing growth hormone.
I'm not sure of the process, but whilst sleeping on GHB, your breathing is slower, but your blood is more oxygenated.
As for Neurosoup saying GHB doesn't feel clean like MDMA, MDMA is a synthetic drug, with damaging aspects.

Yes, and your opinion could kill someone. An addiction of this sort needs weening, typically with benzodiazapines. If you had a bad experience in "treatment" it's because it was one patterned after the CULT of Scientology's "AA" or "NA," which have about a 25% success rate anyway. A real medical detox clinic will not use brainwashing and shame as tools. Unfortunately, most people pushed into "treatment" by the law are pushed into the cult versions.

If you are talking about the 12 step programs of AA and NA, they have nothing to do with Scientology's treatment programs. They are not affiliated with any religion either, although they encourage belief in a higher power/"God" of one's choosing (which makes them problematic for atheists and agnostics) to help cope with life.
They aren't cults either, but I agree there are some group-think aspects that are vaguely cultish.
I know these programs, I was sentenced to go once after a bust :)

Hi ZarathustrasCrown. I think there was case that set a precedent for that. Somebody sentenced to attend AA didn't want to go, and claimed it was unconstitutional because of the religion clause in the 1st Amendment. And he won. But they still send people to 12 Step programs when sentencing anyway, for some people who have been determined to have an alcoholism and/or addiction problem.
There are alternatives, such as something called "RR" (Rational Recovery).

I don't think I am an "addict/alcoholic" though, in the sense of the-rehab industries theories, of automatically being addicted to anything else that is mood altering, and also, I think I was self-medicating cyclothymia out of ignorance of my condition, and fell into a vicious cycle when opiate tolerance set in.

TO be frank, I don't care much for the dogma-ish 12 steps, so I am not totally hostile to your criticism of the programs, but I think you're going overboard labeling them a cult. And it didn't work in the sense of how it is supposed to work, since I don't think I am really an addict, and still use *some* mood altering substances and entheogens.

I agree with you about all that BTW. I called a detox ctr to get a bed when I was trying to get off of smack once, and they told me not to stop using before I went in! Of course that precaution probably wasn't necessary in my case, as opiate withdrawals are very rarely fatal, even if they are extremely unpleasant (one feels like they are dying if its as severe as my case was).

I've seen people having seizures before from alcohol withdrawal. With few exceptions, its best to be under medical supervision when going through a withdrawal from drugs that cause CNS depression. Benzos, booze, barbs, etc.

Unless things have changed, just about every medical detox in the USA introduces people to 12 Step programs. I suspect the thinking is, its a cheap support group system for maintenance after they are sent home (everybody donates a buck for the one hour rental where they hold the meetings), and they justify doing it cuz of success rate you mentioned earlier. The success rate isn't all that impressive for complete abstinence over a year, but its about the only thing WITH a success rate.

Its false if speaking in absolutes, which I wasn't (figure of speech). Other programs have success rates, but they are negligible in comparison. Its possible I am misinformed, if you have proof of a comparable success rate I will be happy to bookmark it. Now, its possible another program could have a better success rate quantitatively, but hasn't been properly evaluated via exposure to the general public because of the practice of sending people to 12 step programs(as I previously mentioned).

They had to get me up to 90mgs of methadone to stop the withdrawals from heroin, when I tried that route Thankfully I didn't stay on the methadone long, thats even harder to kick than smack. I've been clean a number of years from opiates. If I ever relapsed and got a habit again, I would go for the buprenorphine treatment (wasn't approved back then), stuff sounds interesting with the agonist AND antagonist properties.

I had a very bad smack habbit and kicked the junk via suboxone, a form of buprenorphine. It worked from the 1st dose. It's a miracle drug! I had also a bad addiction to alcohol, sub killed my desire to drink as well. With suboxone I was able to kill 2 very bad birds with one stone! My suboxone doc retired, so I talked to my family doc, he agreed to take over and has decided to keep me on it indefinitely. It has changed my quality of life from night to day! Ive been on sub 4yrs/ no side effects!
