I once worked somewhere & they moved locations. I had been there for 2 yrs & was in college so I had a sched that they usually worked with wonderfully, so even though I was now having to drive 20 miles one way to work, I did it anyways bc of my sched. They put the sched up sunday night for the following week (ie. the next day). It sucked, bc they did not allow schedules to be given out over the phone. It sucked working sunday day and having to drive back there sunday night for my schedule! UGHH!
my 2nd serving job made the schedule the night before. fine. always got it. but then decided to CHANGE the schedule randomly WITHOUT notification. so they would call an hour into the time we were SUPPOSED to work our changed schedule, they would apologize for not informing us, but usually wouldn't need us when we dropped everything to come in. for our scheduled times, if you didn't open, you would sit off the clock for up to 2 hours before work, or would send you home if we weren't busy
I used to work for a very popular chain restaurant that I swear is in every movie ever made. We would never get our schedule until Saturday night at the earliest when the week would start on Monday... A bit frustrating.
Mr Waiterman, have you heard of the new show 2 Broke Girls? Perhaps not very manly watching, but they are both waitresses and I just love the way they stick it to their customers. Try youtube searching 2 Broke Girls tipping.
Had the pleasure of being a hood ornament for an SUV today. First time being hit by a car in a crosswalk, fun times. The reason I post this is because I am pretty sure the skills you learn serving saved me from going under the vehicle. Split second decisions and learning HOW to fall so you don't do as much damage to yourself when cruising through the wet floors of a kitchen paid off. Bruised but ready to work again on wed.
I live in Wisconsin and the only time servers get called off are snow days because you think it'd be slow... but it never is... customers risk their lives to go out to eat and me and one other server manning the dining room get SWAMPED. Snow days are always a shit show, you'd think they would learn.
Our schedule comes out on Sat nights at 10pm (we close at 11pm) Since the managers don't get there until 3pm which is the same time as the opening server, you are forced to get your schedule in that single hour time block.
Drinking a beam manhattan . Mr. Waiter Man, I certainly appreciate this ASD. I myself have been fired....FIRED!.... because of this lack of consideration! Schedules coming out at the absolute last minute. I missed a shift by two hours because I had absolutely no idea I had been scheduled. I did get my job back after explaining to a higher up but in the mean time I had two weeks of no work. So much STRESS that in my opinion was easily avoidable.
Well I sort of work at a server's Utopia where we don't have extra servers, we RARELY send server home(even when we do, it's optional for whomever) and we don't have slow times of the year. :)
At my restaurant we used to have "extras".. Basically servers who would have no section but were still scheduled and were there basically in case someone called off... Of course you would never know if you were an extra until you got there, and you'd have to basically clock in, stand around for an hour, then go home... I have a 30 mile drive to work, and I guess it's needless to say that it was definitely pretty annoying when I was an extra, which seemed to happen a lot.
sometimes when i serve lunch i will only get one table and then get sent home. most of the time when that happens after tip out the amount of money i made is less than i spent on gas to get there and home. such a waste of time!
I work at a dinner theater and we have a button system on each table. The guest is suppose to press the button when ready to order or when they need something during the show. But most will press the freakin button just to let you know they've sat down and make you stand there while they are looking over the menu for 10-15 minutes. On a busy day I average about 10-15 tables a show and my time has to be used wisely otherwise it's into the Weeds I go.
i agree! that happens all the time. someone walks in the door and the manager says "um it's dead. who wants to go home?" seriously? when they ask me i say "not me. i drove here. you should have called someone off. im here and id like to close, thanks!" guests disrespect servers time too, when they camp, sit there forever & get mad at YOU for trying to get them out of your table. btw, how come your camera moves every time your head moves? lol. oh & you should make a Facebook!! :)
Retail stores do the same thing. So do most health care businesses. I suspect it is pretty standard on any job that requires shift workers for the workers' time to be disrespected.
had a customer order the wrong sandwich today, sent it back cuz she was vegitarian, got it remade, took it out, then she noticed she ordered the wrong sandwich. 2 remakes and they still tip like crap! WTF is wrong with people

We don't generally get sent home. If there are no customers, we get to clean. But we get a much better hourly wage than most servers.

It's been a while since I left the industry, but in California doesn't the employer have to pay two hours wages if you show up and are called off?
Whimsey6 2 months ago
@Whimsey6 Nope. And, if so, certainly not any employer (over 20 in CA) that I've worked for. Thanks for watching.
