All those conditions which supposedly have to be met in order for the injunction to wage war for TAXES to take effect are not in the verse itself, nor are there solid historical reasons to assume that that is what Muhammad intended. I realize however that many modern-day Muhammadans are not as bellicose as their prophet was.

'If your eye offend you, pluck it out' has never been interpreted as a literal command, not even by the blackest of Puritan denominations. But there's nothing metaphorical about Q 9:29, is there? And WE KNOW that the historical context of the earliest muslim state was war with neighbouring communities, so a literal interpretation seems justified.

And if you say that Jesus' saying about the plucking out of one's own eye is 'pretty clear', you're evading the point. If you were a Christian, you know that neither in your time nor among early Christians did people gauge out their eyes (or were encouraged to do so by the elders). So the history of the 'reception' of that verse is definitely non-bloody :)

@Safiyahdeniqua Well, if it's a matter of raising taxes, yes, Muhammad does call on his camp followers to kill Christians and Jews. Qur'an 9:29. Oh and spare me the Muhammadan cliché response that the Christians and the Jews referred to in that verse should be glad to pay the jizya tax. So little money and they get such wonderful protection from the Muhammadans in exchange!

@Safiyahdeniqua Look, it stands to reason that there are Muhammadan scholars who interpret this verse in a 'pacifistic' way. Nevertheless, the verse speaks for itself. All those conditions which supposedly have to be met in order for the injunction to wage war for TAXES to take effect are not in the verse itself, nor are there solid historical reasons to assume that that is what Muhammad intended. I realize however that many modern-day Muhammadans are not as bellicose as their prophet was.

@Safiyahdeniqua Different texts or different passages in texts call for a different approach. Anyone who knows anything about literature realizes that. 'If your eye offend you, pluck it out' has never been interpreted as a literal command, not even by the blackest of Puritan denominations. But there's nothing metaphorical about Q 9:29, is there? And WE KNOW that the historical context of the earliest muslim state was war with neighbouring communities, so a literal interpretation seems justified.

@Safiyahdeniqua From the two interpretations of Q 9:29 mine is the most straightforward at least. And if you say that Jesus' saying about the plucking out of one's own eye is 'pretty clear', you're evading the point. If you were a Christian, you know that neither in your time nor among early Christians did people gauge out their eyes (or were encouraged to do so by the elders). So the history of the 'reception' of that verse is definitely non-bloody :)

@BesACB think it means, because as a non-muslim you will never get the true understanding of the Quran because your doing it for the wrong reasons and your heart is not open with pure intentions so of course your just going to see black ink and white paper....maybe you should try reading the Quran again with an open heart. I had to read it and learn the religion, and I did it with a pure nd open heart thats why I left christianity...

Re leaving Christianity: it was good enough for St Francis of Assisi, it is good enough for any sincere man. @asilkd71 Re braindead: I think you misunderstood my comment. The jizya tax in Qur'an 9:29 is a form of 'protection money', i.e. extortion backed up by force of arms. And yes, Muhammad, if we are to believe the muslim sources, was an evil man, but I think we should try and refrain from language like 'run these roaches out of the country' if we're talking about muslims in general. Let's respect our own laws and principles.
