@lordbrunskog I know this is late but you can use different beams alternating between the L and R buttons, you know how to fire. To finish off your opponent, use the Lvl 4 beam the moment the opponent life gauge is down and the words FINISH is show. You have to have a full power gauge before you can use it. But I doubt you'd play it again. Well I conquered my nightmares and beat that game.
just avoid the attacks and fight the monster without losing too much health, when the sign says finish,keep the energy to the final level,as you see the box with the orange squares,keep them to full, kill monster
I played the sequel, which is known as Ultraman: Towards the Future. The controls are awkward, but it's something you need to get used to.

This requires good timing, otherwise you'll have to recharge all over again which gets rather tedious.
