I think putting Bush on this video was a big mistake. Don't get me wrong, he absolutely IS a corrupt politician and I despise him, but putting his image on here is doing a huge disservice to Sagan's words.
You are bringing politics into a work of art that absolutely transcends it. And because of that, most of the comments are just full of the usual, stale, boring-as-fuck political bullshit and inane arguments that you see everywhere else.
@MagicBoterham light does not create shadows. objects create shadows. when you are outside on a sunny day and see your shadow would it be there if you were not there?
Videos rarely move me so deeply. I tear up every single time I hear this.
I wish I could have met the man behind this profound statement. Such incredible inquisitiveness and wisdom is rarely bequeathed to the limited human mind, not a drop was wasted on Carl Sagan.
Yes, indeed Earth is the only place we can stay until we confirm other distant planet to be habitable. Till then the Earth have to deal with different kinds of Creatures, some good some bad. But its the question whether the Earth will survive until we find out another planet to be habitable or not?
Me again. I've watched this video many times in a row, and searched for others with the same message. Won't you consider editing this to take the images of Bush out? I would share with everyone I know, everyone on this pale blue dot, but have grown weary of the political discourse, the hateful comments, the need to defend a more peaceful and united universe. So many beautiful images conjuring touching thoughs, but a tiny few mar the wonder of Sagan's words. Thanks for considering.!
I loved this video, but I long for a less political series of images to accompany the magic of Sagan's words and the haunting beauty of Eno's music. I honestly don't think either would like to see their work associated with the likes of Hitler, Bush & Blair. Should others know of a more peaceful version, send me a message please?
@1977datacore *facepalm* dude 'the only home we've known'... if you're willing to provide some concrete evidence we've lived elsewhere, that would be very welcome.
It's ok to be humbled. In our world it should be a requirement, to deflate the heads of world leaders and bankers and the religious zealots who are willing to cut and burn for their own small vision of what's right. Sagan says it doesn't matter what's right because we don't decide whats right. Nature just is.
@OSCAR1777 : I believe that one of the messages of the video was that those who envision themselves divinely destined for glory and power, don't know how small they are. Another message is that this little spec is all we have, and we have it together and for just a short time. As such, we need to take care of each other and be kind. We should empathize with those who experience loss. And those who create credit bubbles by greed for wealth and power should be ashamed.
@sh4rpsh0t33 The maximum amount of text alloted to me is not enough to describe the crimes committed by Bush. I wont tell you what he did since I am obviously biased. You should search the internet, look at Bush's polices and how they affected the country. If you are a logical person, you will form the same conclusion that I have.
Yes yes... i get it ... its all relative... But it is the same way the other way around... Are you going to walk up to a person who has just lost his house to a bank thank to the housing bubble... and say : "we live on a spec of light .. it dont matter" ?
@OSCAR1777 Nobody lost their house to the housing bubble. People may have walked away from their house because it was worth more than they owe, but those people bought that house knowing what their payments were going to be and how long they were going to need to pay them. The bubble did not raise prices. If anything people who had floating rate mortgages had their payments lowered with the low interest rates after the bubble.
@ilovemyyoshi123 With two wrong statements in a row followed by parental finger pointing at those who were victims of world's biggest unarmed robbery by those gov owners who knew exactly what would happen & further constructed financial instruments to profit even further before being bailed out with the taxes of the victims, my guess is that you are with Goldman Sachs? PS: when a house is worth more than you owe you can sell it; when U owe more than it's worth options are limited.
I wish I could show all the corrupt politicians, generals of war, murderers, rapists, and hunters for sport this video. I feel like it could really turn someone around.
Some poets learn science; some scientists see beyond the equations. Some do both and make it easy to listen hard to what we need to hear to extend our invitation to exist here by "dealing with each other & this Dot more kindly." Carl was one of these.
Great video, it makes anyone realise how futile and yet important the decisions we make are. "...There's no hint, that help will come from elsewhere, to save us, from ourselves." Sums up the worth of astronomy for me.
Dr. Sagan was an amazing figure.. I liked his points in the video. We are small. Even though I believe in God doesn't mean that I shouldn't go out and help our fellow kind and world. God even talks about that we should look after one another and live out our purposes in life. Yet, it is true, this world that we know of is a pale blue dot, but a special pale blue dot. Our home. God bless, comment if you wish.
Way to completely miss the point. At a point where Voyager 1 had traveled 3.7 BILLION miles, Sagan begged NASA to turn the spacecraft around specifically to photograph the Earth as a tiny speck.
So what's the sappy in-your-face montage? Carl Sagan intended for "The Pale Blue Dot", dubbed one of the Top Ten significant astronomy photos of all time, to be viewed and pondered as-is. The Earth is not intended to be seen as beautiful or ugly, but SMALL. That was his goal; what was yours?
@dragonchiId I disagree, I think the montage really drove it close to home. That all these famous figures and events have very small or no importance in the grand scheme of things.
How brainwashed by religion do you have to be to dislike a video this profound? You think that someone as wise as Carl Sagan could’ve slapped some sense into you. Whether you live your entire life brainwashed by religion or not, religion is going to die; it is necessary for the survival of our species.
i absolutely love this and i am someone who people would think i wouldn't have the slightest interest in the world in this and think it is nerdy. it makes me feel funny afterwards and makes me happy and be nicer to people thank you for making this!
@8887588 Well, it's because it's kind of depressing. Carls perspective is rather bleak and demeaning. What a hopeless picture he paints for man. He sees the human race as insignificant. Gee, thanks Carl.
@1971SuperLead Hopeless? If by that you mean Human beings are destined to suffer for all eternity. The human race is insignificant, yet we kill each other, rape each-other, hurt each-other, steal from each-other. Point is we have one live, on one planet, lets not destroy and everything else known to man.
@Hashjihadful, "Hopeless" as in that man is insignificant, valueless, purposeless, helpless, meaningless and doomed to suffer and finally die. Extinction is man's future.
@1971SuperLead right, so, evidence of our existence, will it be evidence of a looooong bloodbath, that slowed down, near when we died off? or will it show that we eventually got past that, and spent our insignificant time cleaning up?
@1971SuperLead Surely a worthwhile & fulfilling life is possible on a smithereen, as long as we each have just one, tho probably not on a particle of WTC dust. Surely somewhere deep inside a mountain folks are working on Directed Asteroid Weaponry, to be held in reserve in area 51 in case we do discover another planet we can war with.
@8887588 People who don't give a fucking fuck about what will become of our planet. People who do not care about what our children will be left with. People with no respect for life and nature. People who are fucking egoists and only care about themselves. Those are people who can dislike this. And, unfortunately, they are still out there.
@FearThisChannel True, they may dislike it, more likely wouldn't watch it as the scope is outside their contracted universe of toys. We may rethink whether Alexander was really Great in spilling "rivers of blood" but at least he didn't deplete the ozone or increase carbon emissions - it took tax dodging corporations to do that. The time when vast portions of this dot were under stewardship of races who realized that "As you walk upon the earth you walk upon the faces of your children" is gone."
@zzinglish53 Exactly, it's so pathetic. We do not have eye for humanity and nature anymore. We only care about ourselves, about OUR enjoyment, OUR life, OUR house, we do not care about each other and/or the planet anymore. This must change. When I look at this world, I really get desperate, for I do not believe we will ever reach a state where all this egocentrism has been washed away.
@SaganAppreciationSoc I kind of see their point. I mean, yeah Bush was a horrible, horrible president, but not so much a bad person--not being a shrewd business man nor a scholar, he was easily manipulated by his party to do the bidding of the GOP. Now Richard Nixon, on the other hand! ;-)
You ruined this by pasting bush all over it. I get it that Bush sucked, I hated him too, but is he really this evil mastermind who deserves to show up in a video like this? Hell no, he's just a moron. Why not try and make a video like this without getting political.
If I could ever grasp the oppertunity to speak before the UN, I would say nothing rather I would show this film. This is possibly the greatest speech ever dictated.
by the way: In my opinion, this was the singular greatest moment in the history of film. I'm serious. And, by the way, my political views learn toward the right. So, I'm not biased in favor of Mr Sagan.
An incredible speech. I love the way he draws out his vowels too when he speaks 'We are just a tiiiiiiny speck in the great, vaaaast cooosmos.' Okay, so he doesn't say that exact line in this speech, but I think you get what I mean!
An inspirational man, I wish everyone could be enlightened by his wisdom in the same way some of us have been. R.I.P Mr. Sagan.
Absolutely amazing, completely utterly amazing. I wish I knew about Carl Sagan before he passed away. This is the voice of a man who could have changed the world into a vision beyond that of corrupt politicians, money grabbers, people who in general, take the world for granted. Great men like these should not pass away forgotten. What an excellent reading, something that could bring a tear to that of a person without fluid. Astounding.
I dont believe in most of what Sagan says (His views on religion) But this video shows how insignificant we are in such a vast universe, in which we currently know no end. The human mind cant really comprehend these thoughts, when you try to think of them your mind just whirls. But, this video also proves that the chance our planet is the only to sustain sentient life is almost 0. He is a brilliant man, I just wish he gave certain things more of a chance.
The lift in spirit that I get from listening to my hero Mr. Sagan, do religious people experience a similar phenomenon when praying or attending church? I think that could be an interesting study.
human nature has always and well be about war. War is our nature we kill we enjoy killing each other over stupid disagrements over things like land water and oil. We enjoy War we thing off war has a game, a game to try out new wepons and toys. If we has humans where to go out of space we would go not off the intetions of peace but off the intetions of greed.
We humans are idiots, allowing psychopaths the power to pillage and plunder without end; to torture and murder females in Juarez-Cuidad, Mexico;in Chad, Sudan and Burma, just so's we can pay less for our stuff and CEOs and top investors get richer. Our treatment of wildlife and farm animals is similarly cruel, and also unhealthy for consumers. We're interconnected with all species and should live in balance with them, not overpopulate ourselves beyond the land's ability to provide.

@NARproductions
It's not about giving things a chance. It's about giving evidence for ones claims. That is all the chance you'll need.

Most people cast shadows.
Carl Sagan casts light.
If we ignore what Dr. Sagan taught us we are doomed. If we accept his teachings we will be unstoppable.
