She could have done many things, but she chose to be faithful in Christ and to follow his teachings. She was compassionate to her offender and forgiving. You highlight that an atheist would not have prayed with the victim : absolutely, I would think that is incredibly obvious. I find it interesting that you single out atheists though, since I would suggest that many or most criminals in the U.S. are christians, and most of them also would not have prayed.

The original manuscripts written by the Greeks in the early christian time have been edited based on region and whoever copied them and what those copiers believed. what did the prayer accomplish? It demonstrated that even in his lowest moment, he wasn't a "monster" - he was still a human who could be shown mercy and love even by his own victim. What if that hadn't happened? She would probably panic and scream, he'd just be left feeling hateful of himself and society. Instead, she gave and allowed him to take w/o guarantee that she'd get anything back. Now that she knows his story and his intentions, she'll also probably let the charges be dropped.

Even if he went to jail, at least now he has a different view of the world and life - if he changes, his son will have someone to look up to rather than hate or blame.
