I fell in love with Johnny Mathis when I was 10 years old. My sister who was a teenager bought his recording of Chances Are and I was hooked. My collection of JM records, CD's and tapes is extensive. I am a lot older than 10 and I'm am still so very much in love with JM, he is one of a kind.
This is a beautiful recording of this old song. I have heard several different recordings, but I like this one the Best. Thank you for posting this song.
What's great about this arrangement is the inclusion of the soliliquoy at the beginning: "And now the purple dust of twilight time", which leads up to the famous opening of the song, ending with "the music of the years gone by".
Mathis and his arranger actually capture the mood of this song better than practically any other version on YouTube. Does anyone know if there is a version that doesn't have a "beat," i.e., just a straight rendition of what the composer actually wrote?
This is so beautiful and so well don. This song is noted for having been performed by 500 different artists! Even so, I think Johnny has the best rendition. He is truly a magnificent artist.
Hoagy Carmichael never wrote a bad one. Top song-smith and what a top voice. Mathis is probably not for the modern ear or taste but he has one hell of a voice. Real class. Thanks for the posting.
Johnny was singing, with Henry Mancini on "Cool TV," when this photo was captured. As you said, he looked right into the camera at 2:35-36. That is the latest video you uploaded (on October 18, 2008), titled, "Dear Heart Moon River by Johnny Mathis." Thought everyone would enjoy watching for that, when they check out that video! Thanks for all the ones you're sharing with us! Shirley
@cybernautev don't u think johny mathis and nat king cole are somewhat related? they are both black and possesing nice voice, tho mr. cole hsa more powerful voice. but both are really really nice to listen to. yes, we don't have it nowadays. so thank you for your efforts cybernautev
There's a background story on this picture. When Johnny was singing his song he went out of his way to avoid the camera. The camera men went through a lot of trouble to get a face shot of him, but he'd keep dodging them and all they could get was a side view. By accident he happened to turn and look right into the camera (this shot), and upon realizing that he quickly turned away!
you guys heard willie nelson's rendition? try it...i believed he was high when he sung his version...

I would remove 75% of the instrumentation. It just gets in Johnny's way. Make that 85%.

Caught that, ehhhhh? You are correct!
Actually this was a video I ripped off YouTube. Then one day the video was gone, so I thought I'd go to my stash and put it back up.
