Someone says that one particular police officer in Columbus, Ohio, should have been notified, but how were The Longest Walk 2 organizers supposed to know that officer's name? That's too much of a bureaucratic maze to expect a heroic, barely funded effort like The Longest Walk 2 to make their way through just to peacefully walk through Columbus, Ohio.

The Columbus police would have assisted them as it is more of a headache to tell someone to stay out of a town than to escort them through in an expeditious manner. However, the Walkers did not inform the police that they would be walking through the city, and they insisted that they were not subject to the laws of the city.

These Walkers were being buttheads, plain and simple. They did not get beaten, arrested, or abused in any way.

The walkers DID inform the city...Mayor's Office, The Governor's office, The Ohio Department of Transportation...this is a peaceful and spiritual walk that has been going on since Frebruary 11, when it started in San Francisco. The walkers had come 2500 miles across the country through several cities without incident...until Columbus. The incident could have been avoided if the police would have had a conversation before the confrontation...but they chose to react in a physical way.

I find it interesting that those who go to such lengths to try and justify the actions of the police either don't know or ignore the history of the Columbus Police Department. They were sanctioned in 2000 for just such prejudicial behavior...filing false charges, excessive use of force when dealing with people of color, conducting illegal searches, and other racially discriminatory practices.

In this instance, when community members first started calling about the incident, they were brushed off by both the local media and city offices as they claimed the Police Department said "nothing happened" or "it was only one officer asking them to stay on the sidewalk".
