I think it was a missile. The optical illusion being referred to is created very slowly by aircraft flying straight at you. The speed at which the trail is drawn would indicate it as being a missile. Also, if it had been an airplane, it would have eventually become apparent as it reached land. If it never reached land, it was a missile. Also, a contrail would thin as it widened. This trail is just as thick at its wide base, indicating exhaust from solid fuel propellant, not a contrail.

Yes. Heat. The trail of a solid-fueled missile is a hell of a lot warmer than that of a jet engine and the opacity of the widest part indicates to me that it wasn't made very long before the thinnest part, indicating that the trail is made quickly and, therefore, by a missile.

You can demonstrate this with a narrow wedge shaped piece of card with the tapered end towards you and bend it slightly downwards - you'll see the same viewing geometry.

From any other viewing angle it looks like a contrail - in fact the reason why it seems to change course is because it is filmed from a moving helicopter. Move your eye from side to side with your tapered piece of card to see the effect.

The way the glints in the sunlight adds to the rocket illusion.

It's dramatic appearance is a result of looking straight down the contrail as it dips below the horizon and follows the curvature of the earth. The contrail is tapered towards the plane and widens in the distance (under atmospheric conditions where there is enough moisture in the stratosphere, contrails can become several miles wide before dispersing) which gives the appearance of a rocket plume rising vertically.

The contrail looks like it's forming and expanding way to close to the source to be a jets contrail. Rocket contrails on the other hand look like this. I don't know, but I agree with other posts that say the FAA should be able to find out if it was a jet or not

Looks consistent with known jet contrail patterns and appearance at sunset (e.g. orange colored exhaust trail). Also, since the video doesn't show the movement of the plane/missile/rocket at an earlier time, why would one assume that the trail was left all in a matter of seconds? Is it just me or does this just look like clear visibility weather with a jet with a contrail heading over the helicopter? Boeing 737 at 30,000 feet = about ground speed 480kts+ low-altitude helicopter ground speed = 120kts which means the object going up over the screen is perceived at least 600kts speed which is incredibly quick.
