OK - Saw her at Covent Garden in the role 25 years ago. Sorry but most modern trained top sopranos can do a pretty good stand and sing rendition of these two difficult arias nowadays. Look at Diana Damrau's video to see how a top singing and acting talent can actually make the words mean something even to a non german speaker.

I have listened to Serra and Damrau and am more convinced by Serra. I f ind the direction better and prefer the faster tempo. THe Act 2 aria is Damrau's province.

Yeah, this is a great performance of this incredibly catchy aria - so far this is the only one that I think compares with Dessay (especially her 2001 performance).

in my opinion, diana did well in this role actually.

and also she can speak German clearly because Geran is her native language.

for this reason, Damrau is better than everyone in this role.

Not so quick. Diana has trouble pronouncing her the "i" and "e" vowels clearly when singing, and she cuts off many of the consonants at the end of the words. For example, she sings something like "Nuhma mah" instead of "nimmer mehr." Don't just assume that she has good diction because it's her native language. If you want perfect German for the Königin der Nacht, try Natalie Dessay instead (even though she's French). Her German is perfect.
