Don't forget that Les Mis is a film. If it was a stage show they were putting on, they could focus more on pure singing chops at the expense of acting skills and physical presence and stuff - those singers basically just stand in a line and sing, and most seats are too far away to see their faces or whatever. Russell Crowe will make a perfect Javert for everything but singing for certain, and maybe singing as well; we'll have to wait and judge it when it comes out. I'm fucking excited anyway.
