My school had Wheelock 7002Ts; by the time I was in the fourth grade, I was absolutely terrified of school fire drills. Those horns would send an intense pang of fear that would rip through my chest.
Luckily, all I have to deal with during school fire drills were 10" Standard single-stroke fire bells and Standard 6" time bells, and a Federal Signal STL-10 tornado siren which is on school property.
I also have my watch synced up with my high schools "bell" system. It is tied in with the p a system. We have a all simplex system. Unfortunately the school is being torn down, but I might get one of the panels from one of the 8 buildings. The panel is either a simplex 4002 or 4005.
I am a lot like you. I have autism and I have been TERRIFIED of the noise ever since kindergarten. The bells anyway. My high school isn't as bad. We have pulsing buzzer alarms. I still need to be notified about drills, but these alarms don't scare me nearly as much as the bells.
@wjrshepherd10 I hear you. My school had Wheelock 7002Ts, and I used to be absolutely terrified of them going off during the school day. It was so bad that in fourth grade I would actually cry about it from time to time.
@elevatortimes My mistake. The -9047 uses AC voltage, and the -9333 uses DC voltage. These bells obviously used AC, as they were replacing really old Edwards bells from 1957
@wileyk209zback Ok, so I got the bell today. Problem is that I tried my 18v converter, and it never worked. Only put the metal thing on the gong down once and it stayed like that. It has the 2 black wires on back. I think it is DC. Where can I get a DC converter from?
@elevatortimes Or maybe it is really a SINGLE-STROKE bell; not a vibrating one. The Single-stroke bells make one ding, and are often used for really old coded systems. Vibrating bells are the loud ringing kind
@wileyk209zback Well it is a model 2901-9047. On the box, it says vibrating bell. It says it like vib bell. I used my 18 volt transformer, and the thing hit the gong only one time and it stayed like that and when I unplugged it, it went back up. It is a 24 volt bell so I need a higher transformer. It is so cool though. It cant be single stroke. It is a 2901 type.
i have asperger's, too. my fire drill sounds like a friggin siren that goes like EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEE!!!!!!!
i have nld and my scholls fire alarms really hurt my ears are bells are just buzzers over the intercom. are fire alarms are some sort of whelen ones with strobe lihgts. and we have simplex pulls. i get to go outside early before a drill because of my nld
Hmm, I have Asperger Syndrome, and bells don't really bother me.. just the fire alarms. Ah well, considering my Asperger Syndrome is very mild, maybe that's the reason?
Your video says you have aspergers syndrome? I have it as well, and I've also been terrified by fire drills. How did you manage to get over your fear?
my elementry school had the loudest systen ever! it had really rare devices though. in the hallways, there were simplex 4037s and it had simplex chevrons for pull sations. in the three new classrooms there are true alerts in the new cafeteria there are spectra alert classics and bg-8s. in the brand new wing, there are spectra alert advancs strobe only and two really loud fairday 6in bells. the whole school has simplex 6in bells for the all clear
Both junior and secondary schools I attended had the 6" Adaptabells which in England were branded as Friedland. They used to terrify me as they were SO loud and had a very distinctive tone. I still hate fire drills and I'm now 36! We have fire bells at work, not sure of the brand but they're rung "march time" for "get ready to evacuate" and continuous for "evacuate".
I hated fire drills in school too, though where I am we were required to do only three a year, sometimes two in a single day in elementary school. My elementary school had ear-raping 4051s before many of them got replaced by Edwards horns (I believe there's EST horn/strobes in the new wing along with mini-horns in each classroom), and my high school I believe still has old flush-mount Adaptahorns. I always felt like I was going to be sick every time a drill was announced
The fire alarms are not as bad as the bells. I still dont like the old bells, and im gonna have to hear them when I visit El Paso High. Im gonna have to try to avoid walking by them, that way, i wont jump up high when they scare the heck out of me.
Im going to El Paso High next week, and I am so scared to hear those bells. My friends at El Paso high told me that the bells there make u jump high. Gosh, I am so scared. All I hope is that they r not the ones inside the panel, the 1970s ones. I myself have a mental condition and I am scared of loud school bells. If they r the ones from the 60s, those r not loud. the 70s ones r the ones im scared of.
OMG TODAY I WAS SO SCARED WE WERE PASSING TO OUR NEXT CLASS AND THEN THE FIRE ALARM JUST BLARES AND ALL THE DOORS SHUT SO WE RAN OUT DURING THE POURING RAIN AND SOMETHING WENT RONG WITH THE SPRINKLERS.
At my elementary school, we had loud beeping alarms that would beep about 3 times, then take a two second pause. Now @ my middle school we have fire alarms in the classrooms & they are not really that loud. They make a buzzing/horn sound when they run but they make you react @ the sudden time it goes off. Then the alarms are not that bad!
@elevatortimes I saw your video; those are the older 1960s-style Simplex bells, originally made by Autocall. The school I went to for grades 1-6 had those, but they didn't work thankfully. The Simplex bells at the school I went to for kindergarten were the 1970s-style ones made by Faraday (the one with the black label in the center), and those were REALLY loud, probably even louder than the old Simplex bells were
@wileyk209zback OMG, Im visiting El Paso High this summer, and they say the bells there are very loud that they make u jump high when they ring. I hope they arent the 70s ones. The ones at Austin High are just like the ones at my school, but they dont work. UTEP also has the 70s ones, and those actually ring every hour :/
i h8 assembleys now cause we have this really anoying buzzer tht goes off at 9 and its really really loud and dramatic. so im just sittin there an... wahh wahhh wahhh. oh crap got 1 tomaz aswell.
Middle School: 7002T horn/strobes, 2901-9838s(2nd floor and 1 in pool area), 1 ceberus pyrotronics UHNH s 17 horn/strobe, a unknown bell with FCI MS-2 pulls
High School: NS horns/strobes, Fire-Lite BG-12 pulls, MASS system sensor horn/strobes in portables
College: simplex 4903-9168 speaker/strobes, a unknown wheelock speaker and Truealerts(2 types).
I later went to a jr high school that had a higher pitch intercom tone (500-600 Hz) that sounded in each classroom. The pitch started about 600Hz, slowly dropped down to 500 Hz, but then would rise and finish at 600 Hz. The fire drill was similar, except that it would restart at 600Hz every second, and continue this for about a half a minute or so. I wonder what kind of systems these were.
I remember in first grade (1960's), we had a 120 Hz. buzzer that sounded through the intercom in each classroom room. A fire drill was three short (or multiple short) rings. On the playground, we had the buzzer loudspeaker, and a mechanical bell, each ringing at different times.
5:45 that's the alarm sound that really scared the heck out of me since elementary, middle, high school too, even LSSU the swimming pool there has that same fire alarm because when i went to a swim lesson it went off.
Anyone here ever have nightmares replicating twoplyboy's vid of the school that had the Edwards horns in every room and bathroom? ...it's titled "You want strobes...here's your damn strobes!!!!!"
Hey, you know-I have Asperger's Syndrome as well... I HATE Fire drills, and at the public Library, before the actual Closing Announcement comes on, it makes me jump like H-E-double hockey sticks!!!!
The fire bells at my school are loud sometimes and other times they don't. On march 6 we had one and the bell was like tired or somthing! Even the principal told us it was tired in the freezing cold!!!
My elementary school had the old National Time horns. Very LOUD ones. My middle/high school had the gray flush-mount Simplex 4040's. Still the LOUD ones. I have a few 4040's in my fire alarm collection.

I should also be getting some of those old Federal Signal horns from my middle school when they renovate the building this summer (they're even going to remove the bells too!)
@wileyk209zback Funny thing is, I can handle the ones today that sound like chirping crickets, but anything that replicates the old Simplex 4000 series (4040, 4050,4051) or Wheelock 7002T or 34T, then I have problems.
I didn't deal with fire alarms as old as yours but I can tell you that they scared me sick if I knew about one or knew one was coming...I had the chance to be right under a TrueAlert speaker back in 2005 when it kicked in and I can't reenact how hard it made me jump
@peakster753 TrueAlert speaker/strobes aren't as bad as horn/strobes. I've heard a few of them go off in person, and they weren't as loud as I thought it would be (ESPECIALLY at the South Shore Mall in Braintree, MA)
@wileyk209zback oaklawn elementary school where i went back in 97-98 had a simplex system withtbars and vibratory horns, Monnett Elementary School whats about to be torn down has system sensor mass24ms, 2350 panel, chevron pulls, and system sensor 2424 smokes. and i have more
i always used to jump when the bell rang because i knew sort of when it would but not exactly when it would.....people would always notice because it was obvious...
You would NOT like my middle school. We had drills, false alarms, and there was a real fire in the gym once this school year. I loved it because even though im sensitive to sound, you could hear the alarm go off in the front of the school before the ones in the back of the school ( Where we are ) would go off. So I knew when the drill was and I almost never got scared but wow you're schools had some really old systems!
Didn't the principal or teacher know you had thst syndrom. Shouldn't they have taken yoiu outside before the fire drill so you didn't have to deal with the pain?
@arizonajostens They Do at my High School, They take me out before the Fire Drills, Making it bad is we have to do 10 Fire Drills a year!, Yikes!
My High School Alarm system have Mostly EST Integritys, A Few EST Genesises, EST Pull Stations (Lift Bracket, Pull Down ones), and a EST(2) Control Panel, The only thing I like about these things, they are Chimed! (2008-Present)
My Middle School's the Worst, Very loud and Ear Raping Simplex 4051s with Simplex 9251 Pull Stations (2005-2008).
@arizonajostens the principal at my middle school knew about my sound sensitivity because of an IEP and my mom requested that i'd be removed from the building prior to a scheduled firedrill, but I had an aide who ignored it because she thought it's better to get used to the alarm but that didn't work because of my asperger's, btw is it illegal for an aide to ignore an IEP request that could've fired the aide?
@snhtown9 I have flashbacks that seem to not go away when maintenance or a company called alert electronics tests our fire alarms in the apartment and worse the strobes with sound are inside my apartment so my mom had them remove the sound aspect so it wouldn't sound as loud., i just have strobe lights now.
@gregorkrause when i first started in my apartment the fire cheif tests them without that annoying sound with a small box that is on the brick wall out the door but now it's sound tests.
@snhtown9 how do you know this about the aide being sued for major punitive damages?, did you yourself had a bad aide that never followed your mother's IEP plan?
@gregorkrause Didn't have that experience, but if that were to happen, I can say from my experiences dealing with our alarms in school and the trauma they put me through, any aide who did that would pay for it, as would the school district. There are frivolous lawsuits and then there are legit ones. This would have been a legit one for you and your mother. The law is the law, and your rights were denied. Case closed.
@gregorkrause IEP is mandated by the Individuals With Disabilities Act. The aide BLATANTLY ignored a request by the mother of a student with a disability. Any lawyer would tell you that's a major no-no. All requests have to be taken seriously. To just flat out ignore it is asking for trouble. What trauma did you go through as a result? Quite a lot, right? It's no different than if a school had no handicap ramp for wheelchaired kids/teachers to enter the building and they refuse request to add 1.
I currently work at Shoe City Contract Co., and there's fire drills once a month, which haunts me at the beginning of each month and because of that, the drills there force me to do the same at home, using the famous Price is Right siren that we hear when someone wins both showcases, and a red and amber beacon I bought on eBay. The TPIR siren is signaled through my computer's speakers, blasting to signal the drill.
@scoreboardE EDIT: I did not like fire drills either, especially in High School, We had them once a month at the beginnig of the period, so at least I know when they are going to happen. One time at the beginning of 6th period we had our monthy fire drill, and they just installed a new computerized system, which was back in 1990, and the alarms seemed louder then usual. The horns were VERY loud in the 500 and 600 Wings, and t
at my school our fire alarms are strobes but the only school that has an old bell like an ibm is monnett elementary and they are talking about building a new school
i'm autistic, too and know exactly what you experienced. Always dreaded the first fire drill of the year knowing what was coming. My elementary school was all 4040's and it was nothing but 4051's from middle through high school. The example you gave in the cartoon was exactly what I went through. Just absolutely scared me to the point where I was literally sick back in elementary school.
@snhtown9 before I started 6th grade, I got frustrated when my pants slid down, (i'm in a wheelchair) I thought about avoiding the october firedrills by breaking my Femur causing me to be homeschooled with a special ed teacher coming to my home and doing lessons because I was in a spica cast.
@snhtown9 funny what fire alarms sound like, 1, sounds like a "Family feud" gameshow buzzer and today's fire alarms some of them have speakers and chirping sounds.
I know how you feel I used to be terrified of the fire alarm at my elementary school! :/

snhtown9 10 months ago
Wheelock 7002Ts scared me often in 1990 and 1991. (Rutland, Vt)
And years later, the gym area of Crotched Mt. has horns, but the Simplex 9833s weren't as loud as expected.

I didn't deal with fire alarms as old as yours but I can tell you that they scared me sick if I knew about one or knew one was coming...I had the chance to be right under a TrueAlert speaker back in 2005 when it kicked in and I can't reenact how hard it made me jump
peakster753 1 year ago
@peakster753 TrueAlert speaker/strobes aren't as bad as horn/strobes. I've heard a few of them go off in person, and they weren't as loud as I thought it would be (ESPECIALLY at the South Shore Mall in Braintree, MA)

FireAlarmMan458 1 year ago
Didn't the principal or teacher know you had thst syndrom. Shouldn't they have taken yoiu outside before the fire drill so you didn't have to deal with the pain?
arizonajostens 1 year ago

@arizonajostens the principal at my middle school knew about my sound sensitivity because of an IEP and my mom requested that i'd be removed from the building prior to a scheduled firedrill, but I had an aide who ignored it because she thought it's better to get used to the alarm but that didn't work because of my asperger's, btw is it illegal for an aide to ignore an IEP request that could've fired the aide?
gregorkrause 10 months ago
@gregorkrause The aide could have been sued by your mother...big time. Major punative damages in regards to what it did to you psychologically.
snhtown9 10 months ago
@snhtown9 I have flashbacks that seem to not go away when maintenance or a company called alert electronics tests our fire alarms in the apartment and worse the strobes with sound are inside my apartment so my mom had them remove the sound aspect so it wouldn't sound as loud., i just have strobe lights now.
gregorkrause 10 months ago
@gregorkrause when i first started in my apartment the fire cheif tests them without that annoying sound with a small box that is on the brick wall out the door but now it's sound tests.
gregorkrause 10 months ago
@snhtown9 how do you know this about the aide being sued for major punitive damages?, did you yourself had a bad aide that never followed your mother's IEP plan?
gregorkrause 10 months ago
@gregorkrause Didn't have that experience, but if that were to happen, I can say from my experiences dealing with our alarms in school and the trauma they put me through, any aide who did that would pay for it, as would the school district. There are frivolous lawsuits and then there are legit ones. This would have been a legit one for you and your mother. The law is the law, and your rights were denied. Case closed.
snhtown9 10 months ago
@snhtown9 you meant to spell punitive.
gregorkrause 10 months ago
@gregorkrause My spelling ability has declined over the years . :-)
snhtown9 10 months ago
you mean punitive?
gregorkrause 10 months ago
@snhtown9 why do you say sued big time?
gregorkrause 10 months ago
@gregorkrause IEP is mandated by the Individuals With Disabilities Act. The aide BLATANTLY ignored a request by the mother of a student with a disability. Any lawyer would tell you that's a major no-no. All requests have to be taken seriously. To just flat out ignore it is asking for trouble. What trauma did you go through as a result? Quite a lot, right? It's no different than if a school had no handicap ramp for wheelchaired kids/teachers to enter the building and they refuse request to add 1.
snhtown9 10 months ago
@snhtown9 * I meant to say "Individuals With Disabilities Education Act"

The horns were VERY loud in the 500 and 600 Wings, and t

i'm autistic, too and know exactly what you experienced.

@snhtown9 funny what fire alarms sound like, 1, sounds like a "Family feud" gameshow buzzer and today's fire alarms some of them have speakers and chirping sounds.
gregorkrause 10 months ago
@gregorkrause The speaker ones usually are the ones that have a whooooop like the Starship Enterprise alarm on Star Trek.
