At any rate Vigilante was an average arcade game so an average home port was to be expected. From a technical standpoint it's an amazing conversion untill you take into account that the arcade machine uses a z80 @ 3.5mhz, reason why the SMS version was so good perhaps?
This thing is a mere corporate e-peen for CES, the E3 of that time...
Chris if your review scared some players away then you did your job...
If anyone want to play an average game BUT have fun try Bloody Wolf instead.
I actually played this game in the summer of 1988 and this became my second favorite game next to Double Dragon. Anyone who played Vigilante in the arcade in 1988 would most likely think of it as a classic. The TG-16 version is a really nice home conversion of this awesome classic. Thanks for the review mate. So far I have watched most of your videos and still checking them out. :)
Ah Come on Ah Come..lol...nice review again Spida1a..now im sure you got yelled at a few times...however I would offer my 2 cents with respect....the game i believe deserves 3 chips the graphics of this game at the time(for home) where pretty good...and the port was pretty spot on...which for the time was a hard thing to do
Man, was it the Atari we replaced, or the Nintendo with the Turbo? I can't remember. But I do remember this game, and my brother hogging the controller. Thanks for the memories. Even though my brother was an ass, this video takes me back and seems to make me remember not only the system, but that time in my life. I apperciate it. I'm subscribing.
This was a quarter munching classic in the arcades, except that the arcade version seemed a lot faster, more aggresive, and the sound effects of the attacks were very different and sounded a lot better, offering a much more different experience and overall feeling of the game. The sluggish speed and the wimpy sound effects of this port is what annoys me the most. This game still holds a lot of nostalgic value to me because of the arcade original. Worth owning on Turbo.
I only got to play this game a few times but i still remember getting so angry when i would get to the last boss just to lose my final lives and have to start all over again :x
I have and beat this game. Another great and accurate review by spida1a ! I haven't played this game in years. So, I think I'll give it another playthrough, you know, just for good ol' timesake ! Later fellow TURBO PLAYERS !
at 1:35, you can see the twin towers on manhattan island in new york city (i think you are fighting on the infamous brooklyn bridge). when i was 11, i used to watch a fat bald and hairy guy play this at my arcade called dr. video's. he always would lose over and over again and would spend so much money just to beat it. everytime he would die, i would laugh at him (him dying and the fact that he was fat hairy and bald) and i knew i could get away with it because i was just a kid, hah, good times!
Highly disagree with your reveiw, this is not an average game, this a great game, and one of the best on the pcengine, it's also the best conversion of the arcade version.
There is nothing wrong with you and I being in complete disagreement (which we obviously are). But, I appreciate your nice, well written response verses "you suck and should die" that you often get out of people who just have different opinions than you do. Ha ha! :)
Maybe not Bruce Lee, more like '70 Jackie Chan since the last game Kung-Fu Master was called Spartan X in Japan which was the name of an old Jackie Chan movie of the same name(the movie is also know as Wheels on Meals and had a similar plot). In China Warrior the character is more a Bruce Lee type and a little better than the Vigilante game. Now lets see a review of that Turbografx-16 classic China Warrior and Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu. just to filter out all the Kung Fu TG-16 games there.
Great review! This game just screams out BRUCE LEE!! Just put a par of black pants and no shirt on the guy and rename the game Bruce Lee. The graphics are ok, the sound is lame and it could have been a little longer with a little more variation to it. Still I will give this game 3/5 playable.
When I was a kid a found a wierd quirk in fighting the 1st boss and no one still seems to know about it... Crouch kick the boss and while he is jumping up and down kick him in the face. No as he sits dazed on the floor walk RIGHT up to him then press both punch and kick together and he dies within 3 or 4 hits!!! Wierd! As always great review Chris.
Oh wow... I remember Vigilante. I used to play this on the arcades when I was a kid! It's one of the best beat 'em ups that I've ever played, and now I see a really great review here on youtube.
I just noticed at 4:02 the billboard on the right is the head of the first boss from IREM's R-Type. I used to play this game a lot in the arcade, but I have yet to own it on for the TG16.
Aw come on, it at least deserved 3 turbo chips, not. XD
Wonderful review and I have to agree with everything you said. It is a fun game just to kill some time, like 10 minutes tops for me. I got a little replay value by trying to beat it without dying but the final boss would always kill me at least once. Darn those broken kicks.
Oh yeah, it sucks. I didn't bother to bring it up because (unlike in, say, Darkwing Duck) it doesn't hinder the fact that it's easy to toss enemies to the ground. So it's easy. You know? :)
Yeah! Kung Fu kicked a#)*. Plus, they were good enough to keep the game "GOING" after you beat it, just ramping up the difficulty. You know? So there was a lot more to it. :)
HA! I can still hear that "laugh" the bosses would give after they beat you. "Uh huh huh huh huh hu uh"
Perhaps. I "love" the TurboGrafx so......from a nostalgic standpoint I don't think I'll ever trash anything to the ultimate. It's still a playable game and from the looks of it, at the most, was translated pretty well from its arcade counterpart. You know?
Oh definitely. If you could have defeated the game in the first pass then the replay value would be even worse. That's the biggest problem, the game's length and lack of variety. You know?
In all fairness, in those days developers were trying to get as faithful a conversion to the arcade as possible, it hadn't occurred to them to add extra levels Etc. then.
But that was a problem with games based on arcade games, they were never meant to be played at length, they were designed to take your money and give you as short a game as possible, so someone else could pump money in.
Well, right. And that's why I can't "trash" the game totally. But, some companies did, at least, add something more to the game when bringing it to the home console (even if it was a continuation of the same game but slightly harder.......you know?). So, I just can't give it a glowing review.
I figure anything under "3" (which to me is an "ok" game, average) can be any rating, most people aren't probably going to play that one. Hee hee!!
Hmm. Darkwing almost got a 1 (instead of 1 and 1/2). I think there is one called Deep Blue that.....if I remember correctly....is dreadful. I try to spend a huge amount of time with each game to be as accurate as possible, so I'm not passing judgement until I get to it. (LOL!!!!!).
It's a game you want to like since it plays similar to the arcade classic Kung Fu Master but even that older one had better replay value because you can continue playing after finishing it. Cool review dude.
That was pretty much my thinking, yeah. In a game like this you really need a couple extra layers when it's ported to the home or else it really doesn't have any replay value. You know?
Damn right. A game is not a game unless there is a challenge. You know that and I know that. As always, keep up the reviews. The founding father of Turbo Grafx would have been proud.

I always had a bit of a tough time with this one but, at least it wasn't quite as rough as the arcade version.
This was the game I chose as on the free mail order offer that came with the system.
Remember that? You could choose between thirty some HuCard games.

It's nice to hear they toughed up the US release of the game somewhat, I've got a Japanese copy and that had infinite continues.
