That's because mastering-engineers started using mastering-compression to boost the volume, usually ordered by label-execs who want their CD's to be louder than the other record labels'. The problem is, it makes the music sound harsh and in-your-face, and destroys the dynamics. Makes it sound like a TV ad. Loud from start to finish.
