How about flourecent quantum dots? :) And as a chemical engineer i find alot of your experiments facinating. Thank you for sharing the wonder of chemistry.
@SpeedinHawk Because you don't want your voice to get reconised by collegues, friends, family your boss, or even the police. If you're seeing the actualy chemicals this guy is working with it its a sole necessity to take these precautions, Im noticing that this guy pretty sure is american. and im sure he wouldn't want to get on some agencies watchlist. :)
Just 1 question. Absorption based dye gives color by absorbing certain colors, then reflecting/passing through other colors. As far as I know, iodine solution is brown in color because it absorbs light of complementary color of brown and re-radiate it completely, but in all directions. The solution then appears brown to an observer. Is the physics of absorption based dye and that of iodine solution totally different, or your description about the dye is generalized/ simplified?
yea i did this but i could'nt arsed putting little bits at a time in it so i just mixed the hole lot together and its like a fucking nuclear reactor it lights up my hole fucking room i the dark how do i get rid of it
Soo, is this like electrons going from the excited state back down to ground state? I'm assuming that's the only way the light is emitted. (Devoted chem student.)
Awesome video, Dude, very interesting. Where can I get these chemicals? Do they have a long shelf life? Once the light goes out, can they be reactivated? Can the formula be altered to increase the amount of light or increase the longevity of the light?
@DrNick1231 Sorry, the first time I watched the video, I looked away during the text that said to refer to the description. I've watched this video several times, and it is utterly fascinating. My son is five, and he loved it, too. I can't wait to read the article to really understand this process. Thanks for your response.
Why do you use this specific organic solvent? It seems to me that a much more simplistic solvent could be used, perhaps one that is less expensive. Do more common organic solvents lead to further reactions and byproducts that disrupt the florescence?
@MrGermantim did you watch the video? He stated outright that it depends on the mixture ratio and temperature of the solution, he said his lasted a few hours. :|
Quick question, can anyone over the age of 18 purchase the chemicals required to do this experiment? Or would I need to be affiliated with a school's or company's laboratory?
Btw I Always wanted to be a Scientist (Really Really) But My Parents Want Me To Be A Singer T.T Waaa HELp! jk umm Thumbs Up If u think this vid is awesome.. :///
So you mentioned that performing the reaction without a dye cannot produce light. The chemical reaction still takes place though, right? is the energy released as heat instead?
Greetings, sir! Does it matter how how much we put for each ingredient? I mean to say, will it not work if we add too much/too little of one ingredient or another?
Finally 3 ml 30% water solution of hydrogen peroxyde
Dibutyl phtalate as a solvent does not work well.
We made 20 experiments slightly changing amounts. Best result was achieved with those above. After that we prepare another 20 vials with exactly the same quantities. The results were very variable, mostly, it starts glowing, but the glow is dim and not very long. What do you think?
@jarjarbinks77 You need to get yourself hazmat containers and either higher a pick-up disposal service, or find your nearest hazmat collection facility. The disposal fees can be quite high, so check it out before you start making things that can't be poured down the drain.
@jarjarbinks77 I would suggest throwing it out with your trash (that goes to a landfill) rather than pouring it down the drain. You would put regular commercial glowsticks in the trash so I figure this is the same.
what do you think would happen if you took one of those (glass) containers of activated glow bottles and broke it? would it go out? would it disperse and still produce light? would it look cool?
This requires a lot of pacience and time but it's cool though.
If you want to follow an easier path, just do this:
Buy a fluorescent marker with the desired color, take off its cartridge, put it on a water bottle and then shake it a little bit. Now, you just need to point some blacklight to it and you're done ;)
The mountain dew glow stick you need little mountain dew, baking soda, dish soap, and a glow stick itself get the glass out of the tube stick in the mountain dew bottle with little liquid in it, then the soap and baking soda(about a spoonfull) keep shaking and it become super bright
That was really and truly uncalled for. Nurd Rage has just as much right as anyone to call something by the wrong name.
