  • I love this lullaby i just fineshest a game were i was a flower unacorn and my freind was a evel unacorn and i sang this song to scare of the evel unacorn and a sany it to calm dowb the uthers

  • @123edub That sounds like a fun game! This song is good for calming down all kinds of people and creatures, evil or good.

  • @123edub It was originally sung by an African American slave who could not take care of her baby because she was too busy taking care of her master's child. She would sing this song to her master's child (Lacy 1986, p. 76). Originally, the lyrics were "birds and butterflies, peck at his eyes" but were changed to "birds and butterflies, flutter 'round his eyes" to make the lullaby less violent for younger children.

  • Sooooooo prettty i love horses

    The origianal lyrics are

Hush a bye, don't you cry

    Go to Sleepy little baby

Way down yonder in the measow

    lies a poor little lambie

    the bees and butterflies

    pecking out its eyes

the poor little lamb cries Mammy

  • SwiftKarateChop ty ;D

  • I had festival today and a group sang it, it was pretty it was two part.

  • My mum used to sing this to me when I was little. One night she sang it to me I was 8 and the morning after it was my birthday. My parents then blindfolded me and drove me somewhere. When they took off the blindfold I was stood in front of a 13.2 hh Dark Bay Gelding with an almost perfect star on his forehead. He was mine!! His name was Yankee. Now I have a 16.2hh Black Stallion with 1 white sock. Midnight Thunder Storm ( Midnight.) I love my mum and if there is a heaven I hope she's happy there

  • Wide Awake and The Goddess sent me, god i love that story.. and of course this song.

  • The oldest surviving set of lyrics are as follows:I tried to add the whole song too over 500 letters. too many.

Way down yonder, down in the meadow,

There's a poor wee little lamby.

The bees and the butterflies pickin' at its eyes,

The poor wee thing cried for her mammy.

    Hush-a-bye, don't you cry,

    Go to sleepy little baby.

  • This might sound quite nice with Emilie Autumn's voice perhaps...

    It's a lovely song <3

  • Wow that is so beautiful. I am having trouble sleeping, this is perfect :) Used to play this on a tape for my son when he was little ... I forget who used to sing it but I like your version better. That harp is just stupendous :)

  • im singing this for chior ^_^

  • mee too

  • Woww, so many fans of Wide Awake, it's awesome! That is the reason why I'm listening to this too, that fic is fuckawesome!!

  • im singing this but in adifferent wayy

  • I'm singing this in my choir class! ^-^

  • The lamby crying for her mammy (mother) is a veiled reference to the resentment a slave would feel that she must take care of someone else's child before her own baby.

Nobody sings the second part anymore because, I suppose, it is no longer true that a black woman must be a maid for white overlords: the lamby is finally at rest in the meadow with mama.

  • This is so interesting and important to know. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

  • Perhaps I can answer why the second verse is downplayed: this song has a very sad history. it is believed to be originally the song of a slave girl. In the antebellum South, oftentimes slavewomen would be forced to care for their masters' children at the expense of their own as wetnurses and nannies.

  • this doesnt sound like the song i heard in my 2nd gade slass on a tape i think. it dont sound likr this thought is wat im tryin 2 say.

  • This version is more like the 80's Disney rewrite. The second verse is majorly downplayed for modern children.

  • Traditional Lyrics: Hush-a-bye, don't you cry, Go to sleepy little baby. When you wake, you'll have cake, And all the pretty little horses. Black and bay, dapple and grey, Coach and six little horses, Hush-a-bye, don't you cry, Go to sleepy little baby. Hush-a-bye, don't you cry, Go to sleepy little baby, When you wake, you'll have cake, And all the pretty little horses.
  • Hush-a-bye ,don't you cry. Go to sleep my little Baby. When you wake,You shall have. All the Pretty Little Horses. Balcks and bays ... Dapples and Greys. Coach and Six Little Horses. Hush-aBye, don't you cry ... Go to sleep my Little Baby.

  • @kataankoryu so easy heyy...:)

with internet at hand lol...here's the link to the lyrics.....

    bussongs.com/songs/all_the_pretty_little_horses.php

  • @kataankoryu thank you! I was looking for the Traditional lyrics :)

  • @babylover0990 Originally a slaves song, for her baby, while she had to look after her masters kids over her own. The original lyrics are a bit disturbing and graphic.

  • @SpotterOz really? Thats kids of ironic because i am writing a song about a slaves life, and i was trying to find a lullaby the mother should sing. Ironic right?

  • @1junkstuff Not really ironic. Perhaps more fortuitous circumstance.

Luck and blessings with the song you're writing.

    c];{D

  • @kataankoryu nope. really, those are not the traditional ones

  • Way down yonder, down in the meadow,

There's a poor wee little lamby.

The bees and the butterflies pickin' at its eyes,

The poor wee thing cried for her mammy.

    Hush-a-bye, don't you cry,

    Go to sleepy little baby.

When you wake, you'll have cake,

And all the pretty little horses.

  • Hey, I'm Camryn, I have a question!

Could someone make the lyrics from this song? I searched for these, but I only found some which are different. I wouldn't ask but I don't understand the whole text because I'm german! So Please, someone...

  • i agree Wide Awake is the best fanfic!!! i've never read anything that i loved so much & i cried and laughed and smiled in tears gosh i'm gonna go read it again lol

  • Lol, totally. Almost everyone on fanfiction's heard of it. It's almost staggering.

  • Yeah you're probably right:) Actually I'd never heard of that song before Wide Awake ;)

  • Can anyone tell me where I can download this version of the song? I cant find it at all online.

  • Beautiful voice

  • ok i know everyone is going to freakout when i ask this but........(gulp).....what is Wide Awake?

  • idk thats a good question...

  • Its THE best fanfiction you will ever reed.

it was written in honnor of the great twilight.

(basic break-down) no vampires, Bella+Edward had ptsd and have very real nightmares and cant sleep, they eventually find that by sleeping together, the nightmares stay away.. it gets "complicated" and the get rumbeld as it were.

  • uhm.. i know i'm going to sound like i had been in a cave lately if i asked this but... where can i find Wide Awake? i really would appreciate the information...

and btw, i came here because the song was mentioned in the book Every Which Way But Dead by Kim Harrison.. like twilight it has vamps too..

  • seeing that you mentioned that WA is a fanfiction for twilight could you please post the link? ty.. :)

  • just write WIDE AWAKE e.g. in google :] really great story. people may mix me with mud (or like you say in your countries) but I think it's better than the Twilight Saga... sorry, just my opinion. and this song is awsome!

  • hey thanks for the info.. and yeah, i already read the first 3 chapters and i also get the feeling that it is better than twilight...

but still, i'm a solid twihard! and if stephenie meyer will really release a book in the point of view of leah clearwater or edward cullen i would stake anyone who gets my in my way.. seriously..

  • umm... there is.... look up stephanie meyer's website and she started writing twilight in edwards perspective, but some ass hole put it on the internet... she has a link to it, and it only goes to the day before the meadow. she wont finish writing it, though. she thinks its ruined. I think its better in edwards perspective, though. its really good. read it!!! :)

  • there is another song almost exactly like this called All the Pretty Little Ponies it's lyrics seems to flow better with the tune

  • and again WA ^^

  • copy and past if WA brought you here Dark edward is hotter!

  • WA is one of the best stories i've ever read. AngstGodddes is amazing.

  • -sigh- I can just imagine Bella comforting Edward now that Thanksgiving when he was dreaming.

Yeah, WA beats Twilight hands down. Sorry xD

  • Ha ha, I guess we're all just a bunch of Wide Awake nerds, then, huh? Lol

  • this song is kinda creepy...... :S But I have it on my ipod... LOL

  • Ughh! I hope she makes a sequel to wide awake!! I hate it when a good story ends!

  • wow, this is kind of creepy. i can see why this was part of Wide Awake.
