She would sing this song to her master's child (Lacy 1986, p. 76). Originally, the lyrics were "birds and butterflies, peck at his eyes" but were changed to "birds and butterflies, flutter 'round his eyes" to make the lullaby less violent for younger children.

The lamby crying for her mammy (mother) is a veiled reference to the resentment a slave would feel that she must take care of someone else's child before her own baby.

Nobody sings the second part anymore because, I suppose, it is no longer true that a black woman must be a maid for white overlords: the lamby is finally at rest in the meadow with mama.
