  • what does the mode button do?

  • @lopingnoahsteam Same as the mode button on the 6 button controller it can be used as a 7th button in games or if you hold it down while powering up the system it puts the controller into 3 button mode because a few games don't work properly with the 6 button controller.

  • I got something like that but its called a retrogen

  • In your hand it doesn't look that big - somehow it seem to be even quite handy :-)

Now you made me wanting to get one of these, don't you have a 2nd one to sell? ^^

As you maybe remember, I do have a modified game gaer with a controller port and a TV output what I thought was cool - but after this video i def. realised, that i still miss something else big in my colletion ;-D

PS: Great video, very informative and nice done!

  • @Atarix777 Thanks bud! You definitely need to pick up one of these even though it was never released in Europe. Oh yeah your Game Gear was really cool I remember seeing that.

  • @MN12BIRD - I guess a 3rd of my stuff was never released over here or was imported from the outside, so it will fit well on the shelf ;-D

I am also trying to find a Sega Multimega, but I guess that will not be that easy over here... But its so cool... ;-D

  • Cool, these look awesome :) btw, who is that whispering at 4:10?

  • @mpc1209 No worries about my question :) I figured it was you whispering to the guy holding the camera :P

  • Hi great vids! Is it possible to replace the gg or nomad screens with lcds like the iPhone / smart phones ? That would rock!

  • @delatroy Yep u can replace the LCD screen with modern active TFT screens that look MUCH better esp with the fast moving picture and you can even do an LED backlight mod. You just have to know what screens to get it has to support native composite and be the right specs. I've seen people who sell pre modded ones and the image quality is much better!

  • @MN12BIRD wow that's so awesome! I want to do it for the gamegear :) Do you have any further information about it? Tutorials / specs / etc.

  • hows the sound quality is more like the model 1 or 2 genesis

  • at 4:35 you can hear someone whisper point the camera tord the screen or somthing like that

  • @roosteemon LOL yeah that was me.

  • Some people say it's a shame Sega no longer make video game hardware, but I suspect that if they had continued making some of the decisions and products they were making back then such as the Nomad and milking the FMV capabilities out of the Mega CD more than they needed to, you know what would happen in the end, that's right, Sega would have most likely gone out of business completely . At least they're still developing software.

  • Damn

  • i had a 12 volt plug for the cigar lighter in my parents car when i had mine so i was pretty lucky. Didn't have to deal with that battery bullshit.

  • If Sega does come back into gaming. They owe it to themselves and the fans to give us an official portable Mega Drive/Genesis system. Likethis one but with better battery life etc.

  • this thing looks like something Ben heck would do

  • @thecooldude9999 This was before Ben Heck. I wouldn't mind trying a Nomad, but imo GenMobile is still superior for obvious reasons (if I wanted perfect accuracy, I would just play my Model 1). I've heard the games freeze if you bump it, is this true? One thing I love about SEGA hardware is the designs. I like that they chose the rounded black look for the Genesis, Game Gear, Nomad, and Saturn. They look so nice and sleek in comparison to Nintendo's clunky gray bricks.

  • @BaconStein I agree. I always liked the look Sega has made for all their stuff. They don't turn yellow over the years like Nintendo. They just look badass. I like the rounded edges, Sega was thinking outside the box...Look.

  • Sega ran themselves out of business. Everyone else watched LOL

  • So... Sega Nomad isn't mad?

  • Sega's problem was they were just too far ahead of their time. They tried to do way too much with the technology that was available at the time. They were even doing online console gaming first and it bombed. Today, you can't NOT do online gaming.

  • yeah not bad. i seen a video where someoen modded it and put a new lcd screen in it because the other one was broken and it looked good.

  • new into would be great but still good vid!

  • What about the Turbo Express? that came out Waaaaay earlier then the nomad.

  • I bought one of these a while ago on ebay but it's horribly broken. You have to bend the power cable forwards really hard to get it to get power. If i could fix it i would. But some of my favourite (Pal) games wont work on it lol.

  • Good game choice! :P Rocket Knight Adventure is a forgotten gem, but one of my favorite Genesis game ever.

  • That is fantastic J, really looks good. I have yet to add one of these to my collection but hope to do so here in the near future. really enjoyed the explanation on the history as well.

  • That one looks really nice dude.

  • I remember this piece of hardware back in the day, like you said in pal regions it was not available so never got my filthy hands on that sucker but it would had been fun at the time, now I have an open pandora full of emulators but it's not the same as loading a bulky system full of AA batteries... ah how nostalgia can fuck with your head sometimes

  • Great video. But I recommend to anyone out there: don't get a nomad. Unless you just want to collect it for the sake of collecting. If you just want to play Genesis games on the go, get a GP2X Wiz. It plays genesis roms 100% perfect (from what I see in every game ive played) and it's an organic led screen, like the upcoming psp vita! Plus it emulates tons of other systems really well.

  • How clean is the video output to the TV? On first glance it seems a bit cleaner than a stock Genesis 2.

  • @bagelghost Yeah man I was surprised. It's REALLY clean. Might be the cleanest composite video I've seen from any Genesis!

  • I love the Nomad. I got a bare one at a garage sale for $7 a couple years back. I just wish the screen was better. It's impossible to play Sonic on the damn thing.

  • Just curious, what's the battery life on this? Does it last even less than the Game Gear's considering all that hardware?

  • cracker vid as always, must say it looks like an excellent half baked idea. Pity we never got the chance to see this in europe.

  • I've had my Nomad for a couple years now, and I have to say, I love everything about it. As an American 15 year old boy who grew up only play Sega Genesis, I love being able to play my favorite games from my childhood in my room where I dont have a TV. Also I just love having it as a collector item. Now if only I could play my Dreamcast games without a TV.

  • awsome vid man, all the info you gave was very useful!!!

  • Can you Play 32X games on that?

  • @DEATHOMEGA69 You need to make modifications to get a 32X to work on it and then 32X can work.

  • @DEATHOMEGA69 Man oh man, the thing's already huge enough, imagine jamming a 32x in the top of it.

  • Makes no difference to me that the Nomad never made it to the PAL regions. Never liked portables and I never will, I need to play my games on the big TV screen and plus chances are the Nomad would've had fast NTSC music if it was released in the PAL regions something I cannot tolerate.

But it's a good video Jake and it's still good that you brought it to attention.

  • I actually learned a few new things about the Sega Nomad; like the fact you can connect it to your TV to play, and that you can connect a 2nd Controller to the unit for 2-Player games!

I might look into collecting one of these someday.

  • Pretty cool vid. The problem I noticed with the Nomad is someimes it lags when playing certain games. Still neat to have though. Ps love the sonic one backround music in the begining.

  • I bought the Nomad at launch from Toys R Us and let me tell you, it saved me from many a multi-hour/day car excursions with family.

I found that in order for the system it to play games 100% reliably you had to use the battery pack and the ac adapter at the same time. A strong bump in the car would unseat the adapter plug just enough and the Nomad would reset itself unless it had the battery back up.

I learned this the hard way playing Phantasy Star IV...

    I miss SEGA

  • i own a nomad myself, a cool handheld and handy for a quick Mega Drive/Genesis fix

  • great video man, the nomad seems like it would be fun to play, a twist to the genny

  • I wanted one of these so bad back in the day, but my game gear was all I got.

  • My sister in law gave me 2 nomads what kind of ac cord do I use for it

  • I was ecstatic when I bought a Nomad about 6 months ago (and for under $20). A cool pickup for my Sega hardware collection. It's great for when I want to sit in my car on lunch, eat some tacos, and play some NBA Jam and Aladdin.

  • $180 in 1995, I paid $50 new at Toys R Us in 1996, if I remember for one. Still have it.

  • A def must have for any saga fan.

    Great video, bro

  • I love how instead of blanking it out, the AV cable mirrors what's on the Nomad's LCD... seriously. That's a feature you can't really find on a lot of AV devices from 1995.

I also love how hard it is to find a Nomad in the Midwestern United States. *sarcasm*

  • well done.

  • Game Gear was 10 times better than the Gameboy. Size was no big deal and battery was no big deal if you just bought a cigarette lighter adaptor. Great for long trips for kids in car. Also good way to take to friends house to play multiplayer when you system linked and played football...Game gear was much better. The short falls were not that bad. The nomad was a great idea. It just didn't sell because Nintendo caught American perception as the better hand held device.

  • Nice pickup....I have been wanting to get one for my collection for years. I remember when it came out and they were marketing it with Comic Zone.....It was huge for a handheld...but i remember seeing one at Electronic Boutique and I must say it was a well built beast for the time.....amazing how far we have come in 15 years.....when you consider how long VCR's were considered "cutting edge".....Now you can cram 100 Genesis games in a smart phone.....

  • When I was a kid in the early '90s, my friends and I thought the Game Gear was the portable version of the Genesis, because it had Sonic, and Sega sure didn't publicize the fact that it was actually based on the older 8-bit Master System. And a few of my classmates had Lynxes and Game Gears, but the Game Boy was the only portable with any lasting popularity among my peers, because it was the only one truly pocket-sized, and the only one with a display readable in sunlight.

  • A very novel concept, as well as handy for roadtrips (like you said) and looking bad-ass for being able to play the best port of Street Fighter II or Mortal Kombat on it. What makes it even more annoying though is that being a North American system that doesn't take PAL carts, you're a tad limited as to what you can play on it.

I'll never forget High School when I brought one into a class room to play and one of the kids cried out "What the HELL is that?!" Good times... :D

  • @BlooditeDrakan lol nice. What did he say when you told him that it was a Sega Nomad and you could play Sega Genesis games on the go?

  • @TheLegendkiller2100 I don't think he cared much after that, he was just blown away by the size. My mate who came in with me though thought it was cool as hell and had a few cracks at Alien 3.

  • @BlooditeDrakan Oh nice. Thanks for responding so fast man.

  • The Mega Jet was mains only too, I bought a brand new one abotu 10-12 years ago.

  • Nice video!

  • I believe Sega has the worst console designers of all time.

  • Maybe if Sega make a new nomad and brand new genesis cart games, it would seel beter as an entry level portable game. Now we do have the tech for it

  • The crazy thing was when I was younger...My parents got me one of these instead of a game gear. I actually really enjoyed the thing, my screen is cracked tho and I can only play it normally on a TV. But it was innovative for the time

  • Ive always was curious about the Nomad, and I used to want one. Only because I just wanted to be able to play my genesis games on the go. Id love to see one day another Nomad. I know of the ones that came out not to long ago but I dislike pure emulated system on a chip hardware.

  • @TheMadPsychoFox The cart slot seems pretty tight. I just got mine so I can't say much but no issues yet. Not sure if the SMS Power Base Converter would work. Damn it would be big with that on there unless you can get the 2nd version that was just like a Game Genie.

  • can you connect a 32x to it?

  • @RazorKnuckles1 Not stock it won't fit all the way. But I've heard you can cut one to fit and it might still require a mod since all the pins in the cart slot might not be connected. Although it plays VR and that game might use similar contacts. So I'm not sure. I just know it needs to be cut to fit at the least.

  • How did your bloggie touch break??

  • @joshbot360 Dropped it and the LCD screen broke. You can't see anything so you don't even know if it's in focus or what you're even got in frame when you record. It still records though.

  • @MN12BIRD WOW that's a bummer =( The Video Quality was Excellent and when compared to the the flip, the flip looks really washed out.

  • @joshbot360 I've got something coming. Should do a decent job too. It's gonna be much better than the FLIP that's for sure.

  • @MN12BIRD Cool =D i look forward to it!!!

  • Bring back the SCD bios intro!!!

  • Well it was the first true 16 bit handheld.

Remember the PC Engine had a 2 8 bit processors so it wasn't true 16 bits.

  • @snake2006 Good point. I guess this would have been then.

  • the sega nomad was pretty cool. you sould try that screen mod on this thing

  • i got mine at a thrift store for 5 bucks

  • @albaniandude6 Damn that's luck. I've NEVER seen one in person until this. Been looking forever too.

  • I got mine at MGC for $60 :))))))

  • awesome vid man.. definitely have to get me one of these gaming systems

    ..

  • Hey MN12bird shoot a video with that & the everdrive see what games work & don't????

  • @AverageGamer2009 Holly Crap! I forgot all about the Everdrive. It should work just fine from what I've heard though.

  • Very nice pick up Jake, I've wanted one of these for the longest time. I'm just not content with the "Megadrive Collection" on PSP =P

    Lucky you!

    Dan.

  • I'd love to get hold of a Nomad.

Got to be better than those horrible ATGames handhelds or the RetroGen.

  • I have a Sega Nomad. Well, technically my brother owns it, but whatever. It's a pretty cool system despite the fact that it's a SEGA and therefore is seriously lacking in good games.

  • @retrogamerSam Seriously What? You need to check out Castlevania Bloodlines, Contra Hard Corps, Rocket Knight Adventures, Comix Zone, Dynamite Heady, Gunstar Heros, Ristar, Aladdin, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Streets of Rage 1 and 2, Splatterhouse 2 and 3, okay just watch my Genesis does exclusives video. Basically all those!

  • @MN12BIRD I was joking. Besides, I've decided to quit gaming and sell all my games and consoles, so thanks for the recommendations, but they won't do me any good. Also, I hate Sonic.

  • i like the review but omg the sega music constant in the back ground for the first 4 min maybe just lower it a bit more so it is really just the background lightly

  • Great video! very informative :D

  • Nice. I've never seen a real Nomad, so I have no idea how big it is, but it looks huge. And also at 6:22, I see in the background that you have Takumi's AE86, do you watch Initial D ?

  • @davidus444 Yes I sure did loved that show!

  • @MN12BIRD I have the game on the PS3, it's a fun arcade-style racing game.

  • Sega Nomad? Never heard of that 80

  • @SarahKreuz78 80? What 80?

  • @MN12BIRD he was doing a little face, like =), or O_o

  • @MN12BIRD I think the '80' is an emoticon for surprised... makes sense if you read it that way.

  • @MN12BIRD Hehe. I might've missed a joke, but I'll point out that that's a sort of exasperated smiley.

  • Genesis does!

  • Its 3:00 am here in europe what can i do go to bed or wacth Mn12bird and learn some great video game lessons i think il wacth.

    JAKE YOU ROCK

  • Notice the LOW BATT light? You will be seeing a whole lot of it lol

  • I bought this from Toys R Us about a month after it was released. I desperately wanted the Game Gear but my parents didn't want to buy new games for a new system so I was stuck with the Nomad. I must say, though... it has the best d-pad EVER.

  • Gotta give credit to SEGA for doing something really bold. But as is SEGAs way - it was done half-assed in a lot of aspects.

  • i have always wanted one but didnt want to pay the hefty price

  • I got mine signed by the AVGN. Check out his digital press vid, and mine. :)

  • I love my Nomad...every once in awhile I break it out if we are going somewhere. I was great when I was in the hospital...lol

  • The Nomad is easily my favorite handheld, and I'm not too big on Sega. It's complete fan service, and I probably would have gone bananas if I owned one when it first came out XD

may be a bit bulky, but at least you don't get tired holding it in your hands and won't effect gameplay whatsoever.

  • Sega does what Nintendont

  • I'm not a big fan of handhelds but this one is different since its basically a fully functional Genesis. Same with the TurboExpress.

  • I got mine by trading my itouch.

  • thanks, mn12bird, good thing it was in mint condition and brought travel bag and car charger thing so u can play on go , and stuff, so that was sweet deal over all, so i was like heck yea i want buy it,

  • nomad is gem man, no dout bout it,

  • What a strange coincidence, I just uploaded a Sega Nomad Capture Test. :)

  • I bought one last year, for 40 bucks that was steal huh

  • @swl9380 Yeah nice I paid more for mine hahaha $40 is sweet.

  • @MN12BIRD How much did you pay? I was hoping you were going to say it in the video lol.

  • @MN12BIRD screen quality was decent given the limits of technology for hand-held gaming devicies at the time :) but at least not as bad as org. Gameboy which is HARD to see I prefer the Super Gameboy, or GBA when playing org Gameboy games

  • This is a great portable unit although you have to give credit to NEC for making the Turbo Express many years before the Nomad playing console games on the go. In my opinion, the Game Gear should of not existed and the Nomad should of came out in the early 90's to compete with the Turbo Express.

  • @TheSideshowNick Yeah but the PC Engine GT/Turbo Express came at a price. Wasn't it like $350 when it first launched? Even at $250 when the price dropped it was still $100 more than the Game Gear! But it was worth it if you could afford it at the time and like I said in the description the quality of that LCD screen was mind blowing for the time!

  • I'm ok with this :)

  • Haha you lucky dog a Sega Nomad! Are you going to do the LCD mod?

  • @KieranD212 Probably not. Just keep it stock. I wouldn't want to break my only one. If I found another one cheap maybe.

  • @MN12BIRD If your interested a youtuber called RetroGameTech did the mod to his Nomad if you want to see how its done and how it turns out, i think he got the idea from Thomas3120 another great modder on youtube.

  • @MN12BIRD what do you think of rocket knight adventures? i want to play it.

  • Sega is MEGA!

  • always love when you show up sega stuff!! =D

    take care jake!
