You don't need much throttle to go fast on that thing!!! I can hear it in your video . I know becasue I have been riding for 26 years and I rode an 85 yz 250 for a long time. I actually rode with an experienced kid and he is a good rider a few years back and I had a 75 dt 400 and he was on a 06 wr 4?? I have to tell you I think the DT 400 may be a little faster but as far as yz 490 forget it. My friend just bought one I am worried about him. Newer bikes do not = faster bikes

I don't know if it is true or not, but i've heard that the 465's were way better then the 490's. from what i've read, the 465's were more reliable, lighter, had more power, and had better handling. But, like I said, I don't know if it is true.

@krazyfordodge Yes I have heard the same and I have ridden both bikes up a gnarly hillclimb.The 465 is low and small Maybe it handles better but I felt like my feet where going to get ripped off while riding it.It had horrible brakes and the front suspension sagged down halfway through its travel sitting in one spot.I liked my 490 better then that bike but Im probably the only one in the world who will say that

@BigAgitator You also have a point. The yz 490s were VERY powerful bikes, but power doesnt always equal speed. In a drag race you could hang with my kx450f. But on the track, my bike with the technology (mostly the suspension) would rule. I ride my dads old Bultaco(remember those) and its freakin sweet, but I get back on my 450 and I feel like a god because of how easy it is to fly around a track. Thank you for keeping this debate civil, thats rare these days.

@kawasakilove86 Thanks. Yeah, I don't dispute the fact that the modern bikes in general (all of 'em) handle faaar better than older bikes. power delivery has also improved significantly. I was referring strictly to brute force in a straight line. However this is hard to compare in a drag race because the rider has to be in tune with the machine and know when/how to shift well, etc... A 500 with a wimpy rider (who cannot get on it hard) will lose to pastrana on a 125 even in a straight line.

@AntBanks2626 Being a MECHANIC by trade, I have a decent grasp of the mechanical workings of the machine. It's an over-quadratic motor that is based off the yamaha 465 platform. the 490 cylinder is just a punched out 465 jug. Port timing, stroke, are unchanged. I do not own a 450. I own a yz250 and a Husqvarna 610. Something else you may not know about me; I am an avid fan of the 490 but there will always be better performing machines out there. the 450s are simply more user friendly,

Once I got thrown off from the sheer acceleration she flipped on her side and continued to idle normally til I walked over, picked her up and drove off.
