Alex and Starcross42 you make some very good points.. Free energy is everywhere, but harnessing is the challenge we need. Theres lots of dark energy, zero point etc. magnetism all co-existing independent of each other. Its just sitting there unused.One day we will find a way, maybe even how to sequester builtup co2 in the atmosphere. In the meantime, maybe the fusion project in Livermore may bear some fruit.
On earth free energy is impossible, too many forces involved (friction, gravity etc.)... Maybe if you tried in outer space you'd be more successful ...
@AlexSakusuke Things seem to move in space for a long time. However if someone were to try and 'harvest' the energy from a moving object then it would have to slow down. It's not alwyas about friction (as this video shows) because when electric energy is created there are resulting forces that oppose it. This would be true in space as well as on earth.

@AlexSakusuke The efforts should be put on harnessing all the WASTED energy. The electric car that uses the braking force to charge the battery is an example. The energy captured from braking isn't nearly equal to the energy needed to regain the same speed, however it is a start. We waste so much energy and especially here in America.
In a theoretically 100% efficient system, you could use energy to accelerate an object, then capture that energy back (therefore stopping motion), then use it to accelerate again (to reach the same velocity as before).
In reality there are things like friction, as well as inefficiencies in the transformation process, where energy is unintentionally converted to other forms (heat, sound).

@word777 Proving the impossible? Interesting. In fact, it is so difficult that when you write a Masters thesis you don’t PROVE your statement. You create a null hypothesis and then disprove it. Much easier. Example: “This will have NO effect”, and then you prove that it does have some effect. In physics we have “Laws” and we use them to build on, but we always know that any reproducible contradiction to the law makes it no longer a law. They give Nobel prizes when you disprove a law.

@masster64 You're wrong. Even monetarily speaking there is no such thing as free energy. Consider an example where by one expends 400 cal. tending one sq. meter of corn. The corn on average will harvest 10,000 cal. of food. Does that mean we netted 9600 cal. from the sun for FREE? No. We had to expend the 400 cal. to reap the subsidized reward. Another example is a solar panel that takes 4 KW/h of electricity to create but over its lifetime produces thousands of times more. Not free, only cheap.

@JoelHarvey1 Sorry Joel. You do not have a 'working unit' that draws power from the "Electromagnetic either". You may have a crystal radio or a variation of that technology, or a simple coil of wire where you can detect some energy, however you are only looking at one side of the system. On the other side is a transmitter that is creating that energy. You might get the energy for free, but it is costing someone a lot to generate that energy.

@JoelHarvey1 We teach how things work and how things were discovered. Many of my students have gone on to be successful research scientists and all build on the foundation established. I don't encourage any of them not to pursue new and innovative ideas. I do feel kind of responsible to actually teach them things that are true, not things that I would like to be true but aren't. I still want my jet pack and robot servants but that is just in cartoons. Actually I do teach cartoon physics.

@General4nubis If you live near power lines you can do the same thing. Back in my Air Force days we ran flourecent lights off the stray power from transformers. However the power companies can detect this leak and, if they feel like it, can bring charges of 'theft of services'. Someone paid for it and when you get something like that for 'free' it can be misconstrued as 'stealing'.

as far as I know (without my education) there is absolutely no law in physics stating that you cannot use some energy of a magnet to release the rest, making our work easy.
@frosty1433 Magnets are not quite as magical as all that. They gain their ability because of the way that their atoms move, not because they are storing great amounts of energy. So 'releasing' that energy isn' any more possible than getting lead to 'release' it's heavyness. A magnet is only amazing when it interacts with another magnet... or wen it interacts with an electrical conductor.

1. use a dynamo with glued maget on coil u'll see that u still have energy but u get NO back torque (lens law), that exceetion to Farraday and Lenz law is not so well known because it's the gate to more efficient energy, more than todays hp/kw equivalence.
2. the magnet falling in ur copper tube is doing more work falling than a nonmagnet in same conditions, so i it will "pay up" better for bringing it again in upper position !
magnets are the key to electricity, and you lose a lot of potential energy by requiring the coil of wire. that's just physics, the more that's going on here, the more you're going to lose. well, why haven't we found out how to harness the energy without the coiled wire?
it is possible to carefully place several magnets to create a motor that would not require electricity. however it is extremely difficult, because precision is a huge key factor.

There is no magic, you need to use engniering to create a cycle were it can work infinit like*. Like! the satelite rotates around the earth because it can never fall, its falling with an angle but it never falls on the ground. so how about a rotating magnetic field? or an object that never stops in the field because it's always trying to find its balance.
Cool Idea to use a long tube with holes in it for the Magnet Dropping experiment! I've always loved that experiment, but it never really worked well as something you could demonstrate in front of people. @cris23dumi that's a mechanical advantage of 1000% but a speed and distance of 10%, equaling out to 100% efficiency. plus there's a large radius on a car wheel which makes it easyer to stop it.

Let's see, the older style pulse motors were (and still are mostly) LESS EFFICIENT and the current designs are able to produce more shaft power, but incur a penalty of higher electrical input. The early to mid 1900's needed the power much more than the conservation, so they took the easy way out. Now, we are filling in the gaps and trying "lost" ways of generating work and electricity, but it takes time to get everything up to speed, especially since Big Oil is in the way until they make last $!
So I see dumb people dont even bother to go to Tesla conventions or other researcher presentations to take a look at one themselves before mythifying most important discoveries. So sad...

@armand009 No doubt. My understanding was that Tesla wanted to make it so that anyone could get energy for free. Not pay for it. His induction idea was to have a generator that 'broadcast' the EM field and people could put 'recievers' to get the energy for free. Edison didn't like that idea and they split ways.

If there is one thing science, and the history of science, has taught me, its that what we think is impossible today becomes possible tomorrow. "Free energy" maybe a work of fiction today but tomorrow it may not be. At one point in time, people thought flight was an impossibility. At a time in out past, harnessing the power of the atom seemed to big. At one time, the earth was flat and the sun circled the earth. Who knows what discoveries maybe made in the future.
This is true in part. However none of your examples defy the simple laws of physics. We live in a society that wants something for nothing. We can waste and waste and never consider the future... "Oh, in the future we will get energy from unicorn farts!" And that justifies a glorious waste of resources that we will never get back. The video should have stated that the use of magnets to generate energy is NOT the source of "free energy" and to follow that course would be pipe dreams. Im merely citing that the title is misleading to those who know little. The see it and say "Oh, ALL free energy ideas are bump kiss." But that is not true.
Perpetual motion is possible, not commonly known but this is admitted by science, it can happen in superconductors, and actually atoms have perpetual motion inside them, there is a constant sin of electrons, no input of energy, and they put out electromagnetic energy, orbits are also perpetual motion but that is a hole other decision. The biggest magician's trick of all is the second law of thermodynamics, it has been kept to confuse people about the reality of over unity energy's.

Not widely know but copper does have slight magnetism to it, use a magnet on a string line or drop a magnet down a center of a copper tube and you will see this, I suspect you might still have the larenz affect with a stainless stell line or silver or gold but it should be less.

I agree with you totally that energy should be conserved, as with everything else. To much of our culture today is the "Now" culture. We dont think about the future and squander everything we have in the here and now. My point is, some of the cutting edge sciences (including just about everything starting with "quantum") are revealing new doors to things once thought at "unicorn dreams". Is perpetual motion a possibility? Not today it isnt. Is perpetual motion a myth? No.
If you had told someone 40 years ago that you could power a craft through space with the use of a ion propulsion system, even the scientific community would nearly laugh in your face. Yet, in 1998, they did it with DS1. Many times what was cited as "fact" in science has been found to not always hold true. Newtons laws of physics dont apply at the atomic and sup-atomic level. Time and time again, as we find an answer, our answers spawn more questions.
One of my former students has his own research facility at the Los Alamos National Lab. They would be the guys who would love to have a perpetual motion machine, but no such luck. Frictionless surfaces, zero resistance conductors and other things are amazing, however none of those technologies allow for more energy out than in. But I dont know all scientists. and so I will concede that you know of some who think otherwise.
A good number of scientists working in the fields of quantum _____ (fill in the blank cause there are many fields) believe that "free energy" is a possibility though not with today's technology. Even Stephen Hawking has suggested the possibility of "free energy". All of them agree though that this technology is a ways away. I do not instantly deem anything as "impossible" if I do not have the answers or solutions. There is no 'design' which will circumvent the conservation laws. Just work through all of the 1000+ patents for 'buoyancy motors' alone and you might begin to 'get the message'. I really cannot understand why people have such ridiculous ideas concerning magnets. Is it because the fields are invisible, that you think that they are magic? Would you have the same loony ideas if the fields looked like transparent foam rubber?
When one electron comes out, sure another goes in, but at the other end, increasing the electrons in the Positive end, making it closer and closer to 0 charge, while the negative end looses electrons, making it closer and closer to 0 charge. When both sides have the same charge, the battery becomes dead.
When I was about 10, I had a dream of making a magnet motor. I built several models, many configurations, and my parents and everyone else looked on knowing full well that it was a waste of time. Finally, I learned about the 2nd law of thermodynamics in school.
I asked why they let me go on like than and even encouraged me, and of course, it was the "inventiveness" excuse. It's water under the bridge now, but I'd never let my kid go on a fool's errand because he didn't know the basics.
True, but look at A/C power, lots of people dis-credited it as free energy before tesla proved everyone wrong, A lot of free energy ideas or whatever are totally BS, but there are diamonds in the rough which might seem like 'free' energy but are really just tapping into nature, much like A/C did.
Perhaps you are confusing A/C with something else Tesla was doing...?
I heard that Tesla was tinkering with some form of power which could be drawn from the earth, and I guess some tried to discredit that as free energy; aside from that, he did invent alternating current, but that's basically just the standard format of supply electricity (in sinusoidal form) which is a different concept altogether.
Tesla invented a whole gob of different things, many of which are completely unrelated.

Alex and Starcross42 you make some very good points.. Free energy is everywhere, but harnessing is the challenge we need. Theres lots of dark energy, zero point etc. magnetism all co-existing independent of each other. Its just sitting there unused.One day we will find a way, maybe even how to sequester builtup co2 in the atmosphere. In the meantime, maybe the fusion project in Livermore may bear some fruit.

It's not alwyas about friction (as this video shows) because when electric energy is created there are resulting forces that oppose it. This would be true in space as well as on earth.

The energy captured from braking isn't nearly equal to the energy needed to regain the same speed, however it is a start. We waste so much energy and especially here in America.

One way of explaining it is this:
If you use stored energy to accelerate an object, the stored energy *becomes* kinetic energy.
If you want to recover that energy, you have to reverse the transformation, and the kinetic energy *becomes* stored (potential) energy again.
The energy does not simply create motion and dissipate. The energy *is* in the form of motion (kinetic).
You cannot therefore capture the energy and compound it to create free acceleration.

In a theoretically 100% efficient system, you could use energy to accelerate an object, then capture that energy back (therefore stopping motion), then use it to accelerate again (to reach the same velocity as before).
In reality there are things like friction, as well as inefficiencies in the transformation process, where energy is unintentionally converted to other forms (heat, sound).

@word777 Proving the impossible? Interesting. In fact, it is so difficult that when you write a Masters thesis you don’t PROVE your statement. You create a null hypothesis and then disprove it. Much easier. Example: “This will have NO effect”, and then you prove that it does have some effect. In physics we have “Laws” and we use them to build on, but we always know that any reproducible contradiction to the law makes it no longer a law. They give Nobel prizes when you disprove a law.

FREE Energy is when we get more energy from a system than WE put into it.
Examples: a windmill, a solar panel, a watermill, etc.

@masster64 You're wrong. Even monetarily speaking there is no such thing as free energy. Consider an example where by one expends 400 cal. tending one sq. meter of corn. The corn on average will harvest 10,000 cal. of food. Does that mean we netted 9600 cal. from the sun for FREE? No. We had to expend the 400 cal. to reap the subsidized reward. Another example is a solar panel that takes 4 KW/h of electricity to create but over its lifetime produces thousands of times more. Not free, only cheap.

You may have a crystal radio or a variation of that technology, or a simple coil of wire where you can detect some energy, however you are only looking at one side of the system. On the other side is a transmitter that is creating that energy. You might get the energy for free, but it is costing someone a lot to generate that energy.

@JoelHarvey1 We teach how things work and how things were discovered. Many of my students have gone on to be successful research scientists and all build on the foundation established. I don't encourage any of them not to pursue new and innovative ideas. I do feel kind of responsible to actually teach them things that are true, not things that I would like to be true but aren't. I still want my jet pack and robot servants but that is just in cartoons. Actually I do teach cartoon physics.

However the power companies can detect this leak and, if they feel like it, can bring charges of 'theft of services'. Someone paid for it and when you get something like that for 'free' it can be misconstrued as 'stealing'.

btw, I'm just mainly a theorist and idealist. I don't have the proper education to prove my ideas... but even I know and understand that e=mc^2 clearly proves that you CANNOT get more energy of something than you put into it. but it's plainly obvious that magnets are huge chunks of potential energy waiting to be harnessed.
as far as I know (without my education) there is absolutely no law in physics stating that you cannot use some energy of a magnet to release the rest, making our work easy.

@frosty1433 Magnets are not quite as magical as all that. They gain their ability because of the way that their atoms move, not because they are storing great amounts of energy. So 'releasing' that energy isn' any more possible than getting lead to 'release' it's heavyness. A magnet is only amazing when it interacts with another magnet... or wen it interacts with an electrical conductor.
And I know lots of people without 'education'; that are quite smart. Keep up the thinking.

magnets are the key to electricity, and you lose a lot of potential energy by requiring the coil of wire. that's just physics, the more that's going on here, the more you're going to lose. well, why haven't we found out how to harness the energy without the coiled wire?
it is possible to carefully place several magnets to create a motor that would not require electricity. however it is extremely difficult, because precision is a huge key factor.

Cool Idea to use a long tube with holes in it for the Magnet Dropping experiment! I've always loved that experiment, but it never really worked well as something you could demonstrate in front of people. Now give it to them and have them do it, one on one its great but otherwise, you kind of miss the whole 'magic'. BUT with your Idea of using a tube with holes, that prob would seem solved! We should be supporting these theories, because most of the time when the scientific community comes out and says something is impossible or is a myth or a joke, someone comes along and proves them wrong and embarrasses them. (I/E Nikola Tesla) We're in an age now that our technology would all be deemed "impossible" by people 300 years ago.

Let's see, the older style pulse motors were (and still are mostly) LESS EFFICIENT and the current designs are able to produce more shaft power, but incur a penalty of higher electrical input. The early to mid 1900's needed the power much more than the conservation, so they took the easy way out. Now, we are filling in the gaps and trying "lost" ways of generating work and electricity, but it takes time to get everything up to speed, especially since Big Oil is in the way until they make last $!

@armand009 i agree that tesla was the greatest inventor of all time, and his invention that were patented where stolen by many like Marconi and more. but tesla's free energy in his own words, was from power that was put up into the air (as it was) from normal powerplants, then could be pulled out by any one and used for "free" it was wireless transmission of power, not free energy from no where. read his patents, his works, his own words instead of listen to what others say he said, or invented

He did go a little crazier later in life, claiming he talked to martians & had a theory of gravity that would allow anti-gravity.
He did put an antenna into the air and capture static electricity, that was energy free for the taking. Maybe this is where the legend comes from.

@armand009 No doubt. My understanding was that Tesla wanted to make it so that anyone could get energy for free. Not pay for it. His induction idea was to have a generator that 'broadcast' the EM field and people could put 'recievers' to get the energy for free. Edison didn't like that idea and they split ways.

Great vid, Coldfusion has just passed a peer review journal making it much harder for scientist to refute, there was also the observance of neutrons discovered, we may be on the verge of a energy revolution. Also I doubled my fuel mileage with a negatively charges fuel cell, so it is not fare to say in all cases you do not get something for nothing, they have reported 20 time output than the input.

If there is one thing science, and the history of science, has taught me, its that what we think is impossible today becomes possible tomorrow. "Free energy" maybe a work of fiction today but tomorrow it may not be. At one point in time, people thought flight was an impossibility. At a time in out past, harnessing the power of the atom seemed to big. At one time, the earth was flat and the sun circled the earth. Who knows what discoveries maybe made in the future.

This is true in part. However none of your examples defy the simple laws of physics. We live in a society that wants something for nothing. We can waste and waste and never consider the future... "Oh, in the future we will get energy from unicorn farts!" And that justifies a glorious waste of resources that we will never get back. Flight and atomic power cost a lot of money and people's lives. It did not come free! And I bet that you can't prove that the sun doesn't circle the earth!

I hope you noticed that I put "Free energy" in ""s. I did that for a reason. Its not free in a sense of costs no money to develop or deploy and may cost human lives. Its free in that it produces no waste and consumes nothing (or at least a portion of what it produces) in order to produce energy. I never mentioned anything as fantastic as unicorns but thank you for that great example of institutional sarcasm. The simple laws of physics are not so simple.

I understand the point your video was making but it over generalized it. Magnets may and probably are not the answer but I do thoroughly believe, as do many scientists today (real ones. not the loonies who think divining rods really work) that "free energy" and perpetual motion IS a reality. I do not think its in the near future but to totally dismiss it is to dismiss everything we have ever learned with science. Those who pushed through the blind dismissals are the ones who pave the future

The video should have stated that the use of magnets to generate energy is NOT the source of "free energy" and to follow that course would be pipe dreams. Im merely citing that the title is misleading to those who know little. The see it and say "Oh, ALL free energy ideas are bump kiss." But that is not true.

Perpetual motion is possible, not commonly known but this is admitted by science, it can happen in superconductors, and actually atoms have perpetual motion inside them, there is a constant sin of electrons, no input of energy, and they put out electromagnetic energy, orbits are also perpetual motion but that is a hole other decision. The biggest magician's trick of all is the second law of thermodynamics, it has been kept to confuse people about the reality of over unity energy's.

And the second law of thermodynamics is false, in fact cold fussion has just passed a peer review journal making it harder for scientist now dispute, and yes when Ponds and Fleishman announced it, it was covered up, watch the war on cold fusion. By the way if you made a coil with non magnetic wire lenses law would be avoided i suspect.

Not widely know but copper does have slight magnetism to it, use a magnet on a string line or drop a magnet down a center of a copper tube and you will see this, I suspect you might still have the larenz affect with a stainless stell line or silver or gold but it should be less.

That is not because of magnetism.
What happens is as following:
The change in the magnetic field induces a current in the tube, witch causes it to act as an electromagnet, making the magnet fall slower.

Nope, well that sounds as a plausible explanation it is false, hanging a magnet beside a copper tube and viewing the angular horizontal line proves there is slight magnetism without electrical current being generated producing electromagnetism.

The point about the sun is this. It is used as an example of how stupid people were 'back then', however even today few people could prove otherwise. I agree that many things happen now that didn't happen before. But that becomes an excuse for people to disregard the fundamentals. And don't get me going on quantum electrodynamics. The pop culture lies that start with 'Quantum mechanics' are legion. The message should be energy should be conserved. We are running out of it!

I agree with you totally that energy should be conserved, as with everything else. To much of our culture today is the "Now" culture. We dont think about the future and squander everything we have in the here and now. My point is, some of the cutting edge sciences (including just about everything starting with "quantum") are revealing new doors to things once thought at "unicorn dreams". Is perpetual motion a possibility? Not today it isnt. Is perpetual motion a myth? No.

If you had told someone 40 years ago that you could power a craft through space with the use of a ion propulsion system, even the scientific community would nearly laugh in your face. Yet, in 1998, they did it with DS1. Many times what was cited as "fact" in science has been found to not always hold true. Newtons laws of physics dont apply at the atomic and sup-atomic level. Time and time again, as we find an answer, our answers spawn more questions.

One of my former students has his own research facility at the Los Alamos National Lab. They would be the guys who would love to have a perpetual motion machine, but no such luck. Frictionless surfaces, zero resistance conductors and other things are amazing, however none of those technologies allow for more energy out than in. But I dont know all scientists. and so I will concede that you know of some who think otherwise.

A good number of scientists working in the fields of quantum _____ (fill in the blank cause there are many fields) believe that "free energy" is a possibility though not with today's technology. Even Stephen Hawking has suggested the possibility of "free energy". All of them agree though that this technology is a ways away. Mankind will discover things we have not seen yet, beyond frictionless surfaces and zero resistance conductors. Its only a matter of time and imagination.

I do not instantly deem anything as "impossible" if I do not have the answers or solutions. It may be many years or hundreds or even thousands of years (if human kind is still around) before "Free energy" is discovered and developed but I do see it as a possibility. There are countless things in the universe that we do not understand and countless more things we have yet to learn to harness.

Free energy does exist. But not so much like most think. Its all in the design shall we say. The same electrons coming out of one end of a battery and flowing in the other as most imagine while running a device can in fact at the same move electrons out another battery in reverse and recharge it. The same energy it takes for one magnet to move another is the same for the other to move the first. Mankind just has to come up with better designs. There a bit primitive at present.

There is no 'design' which will circumvent the conservation laws. Just work through all of the 1000+ patents for 'buoyancy motors' alone and you might begin to 'get the message'. I really cannot understand why people have such ridiculous ideas concerning magnets. Is it because the fields are invisible, that you think that they are magic? Would you have the same loony ideas if the fields looked like transparent foam rubber?

Batteries work by Potential.
When one electron comes out, sure another goes in, but at the other end, increasing the electrons in the Positive end, making it closer and closer to 0 charge, while the negative end looses electrons, making it closer and closer to 0 charge. When both sides have the same charge, the battery becomes dead.
This is not free energy.

When I was about 10, I had a dream of making a magnet motor. I built several models, many configurations, and my parents and everyone else looked on knowing full well that it was a waste of time. Finally, I learned about the 2nd law of thermodynamics in school.
I asked why they let me go on like than and even encouraged me, and of course, it was the "inventiveness" excuse. It's water under the bridge now, but I'd never let my kid go on a fool's errand because he didn't know the basics.

True, but look at A/C power, lots of people dis-credited it as free energy before tesla proved everyone wrong, A lot of free energy ideas or whatever are totally BS, but there are diamonds in the rough which might seem like 'free' energy but are really just tapping into nature, much like A/C did.

Perhaps you are confusing A/C with something else Tesla was doing...?
I heard that Tesla was tinkering with some form of power which could be drawn from the earth, and I guess some tried to discredit that as free energy; aside from that, he did invent alternating current, but that's basically just the standard format of supply electricity (in sinusoidal form) which is a different concept altogether.
Tesla invented a whole gob of different things, many of which are completely unrelated.
