Yes the problem is its still a Man's world and if you take a GOOD look at her life the men in it took what they could and left her.Addiction her's especially was a disease. You don't leave someone you love high and dry when they are sick.R.I.P Judy.Love Barbara...
GOOD MANAGEMENT JUDY NEVER HAD!!As for the drugs M.G.M. can take a BIG bow SHE TRUSTED THESE guys grown men seen $signs when it came to Judy. As for the show's she was promised money she never got.Again every one knew she was fragile,so the MEN that ran the show put her in a room full of MEN no one there to support her and picked her apart!!! Judy tried to stop the drugs but being on them GIVEN TO HER BY HER MOM AND M.G.M. she found that she could not live without them.
She is in poor voice here. She would sing "Chicago" again near the end of the series run--one of the concert shows--and do a much better job of it.
As to discussions of the series "killing" her...she had put all her faith in it, her last ditch effort to get out from the grind of concerts. Of course, the idea of Garland every week in your home was unreasonable. She was too intense. Her personal issues killed her. Healthy and drug free she could have gone on singing way past age 47.
It is not everyone that you can just watch perform, she was great. No fancy stage show, just her on the stage singing. Not many people can do that.....

People who knew her, plus her biographers, say that she didn't squander her money: she was ripped off by her business managers. One of her managers was later convicted of embezzlement from his other clients.
Many big names failed on weekly TV- Sammy Davis, Julie Andrews, Sinatra... and it didn't kill them. There were certainly other issues and many problems killing Judy. Nobody can risk his or her life on a movie or TV show, thinking, "I can't go on if this flops."
She only had concerts left to make a living and her voice was already very tired at 43 she didnt make a penny from the entire TV series and her only reason for doing it was that it could have made her millions if it had worked
She lasted another six years broke and deteriorating after the collapse of the show
Her personal life was in disarray but if the show had made her wealthy and able to afford to enjoy life for sure she would have lived longer even with all her problems
Unlike Sammy Davis, Julie Andrews, Sinatra and many others the options open to her were practically nil as to tour in concert endlessly wasn't an option and after A Star Is Born bombed commercially she wasn't getting movie offers - also because she had a reputation for being temperamental
I agree it wasn't the **only** thing that killed her but I think she would have lived longer and if the TV show had made her rich and a successful TV star
I have to disagree. In March '64 when her show ended, she had not yet turned 42. If you listen to some of the youtube clips of her in '65 and '66- Ed Sullivan, Perry Como, and the Hollywood Palace with Vic Damone, her voice is marvelous again. Had she conquered her addiction, she could have lived quite well playing concerts, Vegas, TV appearances and specials, and why not movies? She would have made a great Dolly, Mame, or non-singing parts, had she proved herself reliable.
After being sacked from MGM at 28 she lasted another 19 years Her concert career was a phenomena but it was unsusustainable and she knew
These TV appearances were few and far between Most of her time at the collapse of the TV show she was homeless and left one million dollars of debt after her death from unpaid taxes and hotel bills
Read any biography and you'll see the trajectory of her last years after the TV show declined rapidly - she lived hand to mouth after that
That's the reason she put everything into the CBS show and all the biographies agree it was her last chance to live a decent life - which after a life of hard work she certainly deserved if you think she had a chance to go on to become a successful star again - seems very unlikely - but you're entitled to your opinion
All I am saying is that if it were fatal to have a failed TV series, the highways would be littered with dead bodies. It's saying a lot- too much- about series TV- to say that it is a lifesaver or life-breaker. We know what happened to Judy, but the question is: can you pin all or most of the blame on the failure of her show? I say no, IF, and it's a big IF- she had dealt with her addiction, and had good management- she could have prospered in the other venues I mentioned. Am I wrong?
Well it's not a question of being right or wrong because it's a matter of opinion - and I agree her addictions were the MAIN rea son she died
But I personally think that the failure of her TV show was the death blow to her career and - as she believed she WAS her career it played a massive part in her dying as early as she did and in such sad penniless circumstances
Judy knew her big sell out concert stadium days were numbered after that - and she needed money
Yes, it's all opinion and conjecture and what if. But again I disagree. Right after the series tanked, she was booked for 2 big stadium-size concerts in Australia, (1 of which she blew due 2 drugs), the Palladium, Forest Hills NY, and a crowd of over 100,000 on Boston Common, just to name a fraction. She could still draw and she knew it. Also if the TV show was a hit, she STILL would have blown her big salary, as she did her movie salary before, if she stayed true to form, no?
Her fees for her work were still high and she was playing, when she wanted, large venues, Vegas, prime time variety shows. She was turned down for Mame which could have been a good salary, due to being unreliable. True, her role in "Valley-Dolls" was bad, but if she had completed it, it could have shown she could still do films. I'm saying her addiction was the problem, not losing her weekly show. She at least could have kept her home. When she lost it, I 'd say THAT was her tipping point.

Her singing voice got better as she got older.
Her face was the preetist!
When she wes on my age (Im 15)
I look better then her.
But now! I am so jelous, I wish I could just cut of her face, stick it on me and be her!
OMG she is so skinny, after giving both to three children and being in her 40`s
It`s all these damn pills, that killed her! I fuckking hate MGM!

She seems to be made for singing and dancing. As tiny as she is, she's all arms and legs. (and lungs and a darling face)

From how Judy is dressed, plus keeping the blooper intro in, I think this tape is from rehearsal.
defundthewar 3 years ago
they taped the dress rehearsals of the show as well as the actual recording so that they could be sure that at least something was broadcast
It was chaos from day one despite Garland being her usual brilliant self
In my opinion the failure of this show is what finally killed her - she just gave up hope

Obviously she didnt die the day after the TV show finished but her chance for a comfortable life did
The concerts days were numbered and never enough money to make a living
