The people of Darfur aren't Christian. There was another genocide in southern Sudan a few years back that involved Christians, but Darfurians are Muslim. As far as helping themselves, we had a number of discussions with refugees about what they thought would work best. Please watch the movie and check it out.

The genocide against Christian Sudanese went on for almost 20 years and killed over a million people and the US did nothing until Bush finally put pressure on the Sudan. But most Americans have never even heard about this part of the story, since Darfur is the only thing people talk about.

No. you need to do a little research here before you write/open your mouth because you don't seem to have any of the facts. The US is forbidden from doing business with Sudan; this includes Bush and oil. The main investors/importers of Sudanese oil are China, Canada and Switzerland in that order. And Darfur doesn't have "lots of oil". The majority of Sudanese oil is located in the center/south of the country.

As a film-maker myself, I would take you offer and watch your film. The only link I saw was to some boing-boing archive. If you email me the link to the film I will watch it and give you the benefit of the doubt. However, I would much rather have seen the actual events, characters, situation etc on film speak for themselves rather than hear your commentary. And keep in mind, I am someone who spent quite some time in Sudan (and other parts of Africa) as well.

On the one hand, it helps make sense of the situation, on the other hand, it also can precondition one's perspective such that you go in confirming what you already think, rather than seeing it for what it is. You can make pretty strong arguments either way, I think.

Actually, I meant knowing more about Africa in general. Detroit itself has a HUGE Dinka community (i.e. the "Lost Boys" of the Sudan) and there are Ethiopians everywhere in the US. I guess I'm just tired of a formulaic "white person goes to Africa" routine. If you don't have a connection to Africa or its people to begin with, then everything else is just lip service. Anyway, for a first pass on a feature-length film, good job. And yeah, sound is the WORST part of filming.

I've actually spent 8 months in AFrica on two different occasions, North Africa, Southern Africa and Eritrea. Given the volume of noise about Darfur, I really didn't want us to get too indoctrinated in that and turn the trip into an exercise in confirming our set beliefs. The donwside is that you get the "white guy in Africa effect", the plus side, is that it is guileless. For me at least, there was a bit of meta-perspective on how stuff like this is covered.

The other thing that we ere trying to figure out about Darfur is how something that is getting a lot of international attention isn't showing any improvement.
