Oh my dear Allen. MORE THAN SUPURB! I saw West Side Story over and over as a kid and this song always touched me deeply. It's above my guitar ability but one day I will sing it SOMEWHERE SOMETIME.........thanks for sending it to me.......hugs....Pamela
Beautiful performance. Now I'm looking forward to listening to your other work here! Is it possible to get the transcription for this? I started working on it - and as you noted, the notes are fairly easy, the timing is next to impossible, and the dynamics.... In any case, thanks for a beautiful rendition of this song!
Beautifully played Allen, a very good arrangement, Adam sure can arrange(that's his thing) I saw quite a lot of his work and was amazed. This guitar sure has a great wooden sound full of definition. Let's not forget the man who's playing it,very fine playing, greetings Vic.
Thanks Vic. Since I started working on finger-style I have discovered so many great players that inspire me. Adam is a great arranger. Never a wasted note. Great phrasing. Give your ears a treat and check out his arrangement of "Summertime". The guitar is now an entirely different instrument to me. Life is good! I took a master class with Laurence Juber a few weeks ago in California. Another amazing player. Check out his arrangement of the Beatles "Rain".
@carvetop01 Pretty much same old same old, thanks, Al. The silly shopping riots came and went. Embarrassing really. I traded my old van for an old Jag xk8... some joy there!.. still calling meself retired for now...3 gigs a month or so.. been some good ones. ... suffered early falling in love symptoms last week.... *shiver* better now though.
This is such a gorgeous song and you're really doing good things to it. I've been messing with "One Hand One Heart" and it is so nice as it is I just can't bear to improvise over it. Kind of like Naima in that way.
"One Hand One Heart" is a fantastic song. With your sense of harmony I look forward very much to hearing your take on that song. Sometimes harmony needs no embellishment. Whatever you do will be original and tasteful.
Hey Allen Youy did a fine job of playing Adam Raffertys of Somewhere I see our musical tastes rour much alike/ I just love this guys playing. Beleive me he is a master in most musical styles has great tase and time and all his arrangements are spectagular His atrrangement of this tune is a great teaching piece and it demonstrates the concepts of the result of great voice leading, EXPERIMENTATION thinking out of the box and respect for the composer Howard
I have transcribed three of his arrangements. I am now working on his incredible arrangement of "Summertime". It has a great 6/8 groove with a cool bass line. I am fairly new to finger style. Your books and videos and listening to players like Adam are excellent teaching tools. The hardest part for me is not finding his notes/voicings but rather notating his expressive playing(even in standard notation).
Thank you Adam for the inspiration!!! When I transcibed this, the notes and voicings were not difficult to find. However, notating your dynamics and phrasing was a bitch (even in standard notation!). You give each note time to breath. Sometimes the best notes are the ones we never played :-). This is just one of your MANY world class arrangements.
Excellent, job on this. I'm going to have to come back a few more times to listen again. My home computer is down and out and I can only listen to this on the smaller speakers on my work computer. My puter problems will be solved within a week, though and I'll come listening again.
This is a beautiful, haunting arrangement and really makes full use of the range of the instrument. Thanks for posting!
Hi Allen ,this is a surprice ,one of my favorite tunes ,my compliments for this beautiful tune ,wel done buddy ,greets Kees nipius,by the way I can play your tune ,My Girl, have a nice day and ,keep on picking .
@carvetop01 Hi Allen, I dont put : My Girl : on You Tube ,becourse its your goal ,I put the tune : Misty : on YT over 3 weeks when Willem is Back from hollidays, I let you know when its on YT, cheers my good guitarfriend,Kees.
Marvelous, Allen. Indeed, the arrangement is superb with great harmony imagination. I also am a great admirer of Bernstein. His conducting of S. Barber's Adagio for Strings will never be surpassed. Anyway, great job. 5*****
This is really a great arrangement. Beautiful harmonies and clever use of harmonics. You play it very clean and let the guitar breathe. Really not easy, very well done, Allen!
Thanks Uli! This is one of my favorite songs of all time. (I have uploaded two different arrangements of this song). I like the use of open strings when possible. I am still trying to get my right hand fingers to create the proper timbre for notes. For me that was the hardest part of learning this arrangement.
Thank you very much for listening and your encouraging comments.
I just love this! This is truly one of my favorite pieces of music. I fell in love with a version by The Jeff Hamilton Trio years ago. I have to learn this one. This is a beautiful rendition. Great job Allen.
Thanks Babs. It's a lovely melody with haunting harmony. This has been stuck in my head for quite some time. The only way to purge was to express it. Me and the rest of your fans would delight in hearing you sing this.
Allen, great job with this very difficult piece of music, you've captured the open space and depth of feeling in Adam's arrangement, making every note count. Congrats! Beautifully done!
Thanks man. Adam is a master of dynamics. He makes it all look so easy. When I watch his videos and he makes his "guitar face" I know something special is about to happen :-) The second chord in the second verse Am9(#5)/B was unexpected. Quite clever. He augments the 5th in several places in this arrangement. The more I played that chord in this context the more I liked it. I usually change harmony in arrangements but in this case I could not improve on anything.
Some years ago I read a book by Joan Peyser:"Leonard Bernstein, the biography of a music genius". Very interessting. His compositions and his work as educator and conductor is a milestone in music history.
I listened to some versions sung by different singers, then I came back to your version (Adam´s version): very nice indeed, cause it focusses the guitar as solo instrument for an piece of symphonic orchestra arrangement. Good job, Allen!
Hi Frank. Thank you. To me this is Herr Bernstein's most beautiful melody. It's particularly poignant in the context of the musical and movie. I think Adam's arrangement captured the feeling I got when I watched the movie.
Man Oh Man. The harmony, the use of open strings, the harmonics... all pure Al. ... that means good. I love the way this one piece demonstrates the nuance and different timbers of that nice instrument. This bears multiple listening because a lot of thought and feeling went into it and I didn't catch it all the first time. Nice work my friend.
