people are so rude. i love starbucks. one time i ordered a drink there and one of the other customers took mine, probably thinking it was theirs, so one of the baristas remade my drink, gave me a free upgrade to a venti (i originally ordered a grande) and let me have the other drink that was supposed to be for the customer that took mine for free.
the other day, I was patiently waiting in the drive through at starbucks, the lady puts me on hold forgets i was there for 5 minutes still patiently waiting, finally comes back on takes my order, apologizes tells me to come around for my total gives me the most expensive drink on my order for free because she forgot about me, and a free drink next visit coupon of any size. patience is always best :D without patience you end up like this girl who figures out first hand Karma is a bitch lol

The woman totally went in to one screaming about how she only came in here to get change.
I knew the shop keeper couldn't risk calling her a name...so I simply said to the customer...'bitch'...she looked at me shocked & left lol. Who does she think she is?!

The thing is, banks give $100 bills and we know theyre a pain in the rear end because unless you spend $50 or more, you can't use them to pay. It's like conditional money.
But this girl went over and beyond. Ive had a couple of back and forth conversations with customers who buy $2.50 and pay with a $100. But when I know that I can just simply give them change, I tell them the next time they come in I cannot take a $100 bill. Works perfectly.
If she only had a $100 and I asked for a different form of payment and she wouldn't give me it, I would have just said YES and given her the drink, it has happened before in the past. Not many come in with $100 so it isn't a huge loss to just give the drink to her and write it off as a "loss" still what she did was over the top

@DBunBrewer until recently I managed a retail store for 33 years. Most retail stores do not keep a lot of cash on hand. Most have learned the hard way from robberies and employee theft. I retired only a few years ago and it was not common at all for someone to buy a 4 dollar item with a 100 dollar bill. And If someone did hand me a hundred I usually refused it unless it was reasonably close to the price of the item

I just bought breakfast at Starbucks the other day in Hong Kong with a $1000 bill (US$130), no problem. I don't know about the US, but most countries I travel to won't accept anything LESS than a US hundred dollar bill unless it's local currency. When I exchange money or get cash out of an ATM it's always in a stack of hundreds. If I go to the US, how am I supposed to buy anything?

@sbfpat starbucks has cards you can put money on for this kind of thing. Why do most people use large bills at places like these? Because they want to break it. Otherwise they wouldn't be using 100s to pay for a $4 item. Why ask a bank for smaller bills even when they have thousands? It's easier to go to a coffee shop with a limited amount of money and demand they break a large bill. Then make other ppl wait who do have smaller bills.
In some areas, I have noticed that the Starbucks employees slip the $20s into some box with a slot in it (instead of the register). I would imagine Starbucks uses this procedure to prevent/deter employee theft or to secure their $ in case of a robbery. I wonder if that could be one of the reasons they cannot break larger bills at times. Also, there is the issue of counterfeit bills. A busy, quick-paced store that sells cheap items is the prime place to dump a counterfeit $100.
@brainburrito this is exactly it. I currently work for Starbucks! some other reasons are that about 90% of the time, we just cannot break the large bill. We only hold a small amount in our registers. It's not that we don't wanna break the bill...we just can't!
I do get the security issue, but $100 does not go as far as it did 20 years ago. Retailers need to step up the register changs a little. Maybe keep $250 instead of $100 in there. That might stop people from climbing on the counters. Lol.

@pele6922 There are actually a lot of people that I know personally from Sub-Saharan Africa (like Chad and CAR) and Latin America that are just buying and selling goods from here to there and all pull in over US$10 grand/month in profits. They're all only about 30 years old, so I imagine their businesses will grow significantly in the coming years. Here in East Asia I know tons of people making more. Everybody around the world is an entrepreneur and they probably make more than you.

I just bought breakfast at Starbucks the other day in Hong Kong with a $1000 bill (US$130), no problem. I don't know about the US, but most countries I travel to won't accept anything LESS than a US hundred dollar bill unless it's local currency. When I exchange money or get cash out of an ATM it's always in a stack of hundreds. If I go to the US, how am I supposed to buy anything?

Otherwise they wouldn't be using 100s to pay for a $4 item. Why ask a bank for smaller bills even when they have thousands? It's easier to go to a coffee shop with a limited amount of money and demand they break a large bill. Then make other ppl wait who do have smaller bills.

In some areas, I have noticed that the Starbucks employees slip the $20s into some box with a slot in it (instead of the register). I would imagine Starbucks uses this procedure to prevent/deter employee theft or to secure their $ in case of a robbery. I wonder if that could be one of the reasons they cannot break larger bills at times. Also, there is the issue of counterfeit bills. A busy, quick-paced store that sells cheap items is the prime place to dump a counterfeit $100.

I do get the security issue, but $100 does not go as far as it did 20 years ago. Retailers need to step up the register changs a little. Maybe keep $250 instead of $100 in there. That might stop people from climbing on the counters. Lol.
