  • Why doesn't Lotus make their own F1 engines?

  • Efficent but sterile sounding v-8. Gimmie a big Ford 427sideoiler wound to the moon. That will make you think twice about v-8 vs12 cyl engine sound quality.

  • dont get me wrong i love v8s but i still think 12's got the best sound

  • Were there any American engines and or teams in F1?

I dont know anything about F1, and just courious.

  • @S10stev

Ford branded Cosworth engines were around for a long time. Eagles driven by Dan Gurney in the 1960's. Penske, Shadow and Parnelli in the 1970's. The most recent was Haas, first entered during the 1985 season.

Ford also had a major interest in the Jaguar team, which was bought out and turned into Red Bull Racing.

  • @PulletSurprise Thanks that was interesting, I thought there werent any American engines in F1. with the exception Indy racing but all ive seen is honda.

Who are the major engine suppliers for F1 now?

  • @S10stev

Ferrari supplies themselves, Sauber and Scuderia Torro Rosso.

Mercedes supplies Ilmor designed and built engines to their own works team, Mercedes Grand Prix, McLaren and Force India.

Renault supplies their own works team, Renault F1, and Red Bull Racing. Red Bull also have a gearbox and hydraulic system deal with Lotus Racing for the 2011 season.

Cosworth currently supplies Williams F1, Lotus Racing, HRT and Virgin. Lotus will likely be reunited with Renault engines in 2011.

  • in Europe a medium sport engine 1,6 - 1,8 - 2,0 have more performance by a ridicolous american V8 engine...

    our 1,6 - 1,8 - 2,0 liters engine reach elevated performance..

    a 1,6 liters reach easy 200 + hp and 220 + km/h

    a 1,8 liters reach easy 240 + hp and 240 + km/h

    a 2,0 liters reach easy 300 + hp and 260 + km/h

    go to engineering school..

  • nah you can't get 200hp from and 1,6litre engine without a turbo, unless it's designed for motorcycles and need little torque

I think the Honda Integra type R had 190hp from an 1,8litre 4cylinder without any turbo.

best 2,0litre 4 cylinder engine is the 200hp in the Honda Civic Type R.

300hp from 2,0litres with turbo only

  • @McLarenMercedes

The Honda S2000's 2.0 litre cranks out close to 250 HP.

All FIA Super 2000 spec cars make at least 250 HP from their 2.0 litre engines.

  • torque is ONLY a resultant of the size of an engine (and can be doubled by compressing)... Therefore it will only be natural that the big 6-8 liter american v8s have bigger torque than a tiny (in comparison) F1 car engine

  • There are uncountable American derived V8's that generate more horsepower and are street legal to boot.

It is a literal tradition and part of Americana.

It will generate copious amounts of torque that smaller engines regardless of configuration simply can't approach.

Also, there are contributing factors to generating torque that have nothing to do with displacement, but displacement is indeed key for both power and torque generation.

Stroke, CR, cam, and runner design are important.

  • American V8's are shit. This is an engine. Not the best, but better.

  • The best

  • it's only a 2.3 liter. that revs to 19k rpm.

not some big block chevy redlining at 5500 rpms.

i like big v8s too. but a totally different concept here.

  • Excellent point

  • @samabbott2 2.4 liter

  • Maybe on youtube and at low revs. Actually stand next to one and listen to it near redline...not a pussy engine sound at all.

  • Hahaha

    True.

What I was trying to say is that if you ripped a V8 out of a Dodge Charger and put it next to this one and revved them both.

I know what'd sound better, or at least more muscley

  • Comment removed

  • .......and I know which one would take a shit all over the other one on a racetrack in the real world.

  • I love American V8 Engines, but in F1 its got to be a V10

  • All F-1 cars are now V-8s now. This is mandated by the current rules. They were V-10s, V-12s a few years back. F-1 has had almost every engine configuration at sometime in it's history.

  • ?? thanks for the input appreciated, but i know F1 is V8, i meant i prefer V10 in F1, i wish it would go back to 3 lt V10 full slicks with maximum downforce{ i know next year is full slick again} i've seen some aero packages for next year and its hidious lol

  • They just look silly dont they? I wish we could have that V-10 with the slicks AND all the aero... that would be fun to watch. I'd settle for that V-1 shriek though!

  • bring back the v10s thats what i say!

  • V12!!!!

  • @SS3Heydrich I agree. V10s have nicer sound,more aggressive I'd say.

  • i like the v12 and the v10 better

  • i miss the V10

  • cool this was on my b-day

  • i've been to monza last year at the chicane before the last corner (aprox 10-15m from the track), and god damn, these engines are loud

  • someone tell me what the green light is for? infact all of the colours lol red i know but blue and green i have no clue

  • the green lights are usually on if a driver is on the track who does not have the "super-license" (the F1 - driver's license). often seen at test drives in autumn, when teams offer youngsters the opportunity to test their cars to see if someone has potential to become a F1 driver.

I think it tells other drivers to be more cautious...

  • oh right ok thanks mate

  • no problem

  • another question you may be able to answer, you know on the front of the car there is a N or a Z and on the part where the intake is there is an E do you know what they stand for?

  • mhmm...i am not sure, maybe they indicate where you can lift the car (you know, the cranes that take the broken down cars away)?

or maybe the letters show where you should not touch the car?

to be honest, i don't know, but i know of other race cars that have similar indicators of where you can break the electric cycle from outside the car and where you can tow them to a rope or something similar to drag them out of a dangerous area...

    interesting point though :)

    cheers

  • yeah i always wondered cos the E might be electric or the Z or N on the nose might indicate Nose or something i dont know too lol.

  • yeah right...the E might stand for electric, and the N for neutral gear - which is crucial when you have to pull the car off the track.

maybe the Z has smth to do with the fuel or smth else...

  • yeah anyway we had a go lol.

  • exactly :)

  • No, No, No the (N) on the car's nose means Neutral, if u open the (N) cap then the it's possible to put to car into neutral, the reason is to that when u crash, the marshals can neutral ur car without going to the paddles on the steering wheel .

  • ah you are a legend.

  • N is for neutral so that when a driver crashes or goes into the gravel the marshalls can press the neutral button on the front of the car and keep the engine running

  • now they are v8s

  • these are v10s

  • ive been to 5 grand prixs and the v8's are just as loud and hurt your ears more than the v10's. But the v10's do sound cooler!!!!

  • The green light means 'Rookie Driver'

  • @ignition2000 lol

  • i know the dude on the back who starts the car up, that was the test team, going to work for em again in august :D

  • orrible sound for these engines. The V10 were better

  • have you ever been to a GP? i have the last 5 years, and V8s pretty much sound the same as V10s, except under braking.

Last weekend at the canadian GP, the V8s' sound was as rich and loud as i've ever heard.

  • watch this: "ferrari f1 sounds v12"

Try to listen this. Pure music V12 Ferrari.

  • You're right there is no challenge... V12 Ferrari forever, the first F1 angine I've heard 13 years ago in Imola

  • they are even louder than the v10's

  • WHAATT ??? with that comment uve obviously never been to a grand prix ... am i right or am i right ??? i think im right

  • WTF's the big difference?

  • The V12 is fantastic, you can't say that is the same thing with this. This sound is like a lawnmower

  • well i wanna get me that lawnmower n put it in my wheels n then give u a ride .. how about that???

  • i think that the old v10 engines were better and more powerful

  • they were more powerful WAAAY LOUDER n alot faster then the v8 ... have u ever been to a grand prix ???

  • no but i'm agree with you

  • Its for rookie drivers, i its a 100% fackt, ask anyone ho knows about f1.

  • During a normal dry race, when the red light starts to flash, it means the team is pulling logged information from the car.

  • the green light is to show its a rookie driver. in this case 'Nelson Piquet Jr'.

  • The green light is at the same place where the normal red light is they use in rain races. I think they just changed the color, MF1 also did this at Bavaria City Racing.

  • They dont flash green in a race. I think Zero is right, when they start up they need to run through diagnostic check and thats probably what the green light means. Id assume it would switch off when the car is good to go.

  • i have never seen the led warning light flash green before.

  • anyone know what the green light means

  • I'm guessing it means the engine is in some sort of diagnostic mode, because I can't recall seeing it flash green during a race.

  • its prob a special mode of some kind (aka diagnostic?)

  • nope, they use green lights when testing ;)

  • they use the green light for rookie drivers, in this case 'Nelson Piquet Jr'.

  • When we went tyre testing the light wasnt on at all, i shall ask n let yall know

  • its for drivers who dont have an FIA racing lisence !!! if you want to call that a rookie
