  • Like the Penn State hat!

  • Around how much woodash is in the can compared to water?

  • oh jeebus lol, is anyone else scared by how high up the pieces are? XD

At about 4:45 in I was like O_____O

  • potterycrazy, you said, My dog was going crazy from the noise your SPAYER made...

    What dog wouldn't? LOL

  • Simon, my dog was going crazy from the noise your spayer made. LOL.

    Great video!

    thanks

  • is it wood ash+water only or +SiO2 ? or +Al2O3?

    Thank you

  • Simon

Can we look at the result after firing

    sorry my english no perfect

  • Wow I'm behind times;-) Very interesting Simon! Gotta get my kiln ready for a bisque fire, going out to the shed to keep on those cylinders, I'm trying to get a foot tall or taller with 3 lbs of clay, I have reached the 12 inches but nothing usable yet!!! I will be trying the wood ash now that I know it can be done in an electric kiln;-) Keep you posted;-)

Have a nice day & Thanks!

  • Looking forward to seeing the results on these pieces.

I have seen dry wood ash mixed with oxide dusted on cone 6 electric pots and they came out very nice. Pinnel's weather bronze will blush a lovely toast in an electric cone 6 firing.

  • You can get a Chapin Hand 48-Ounce Light-Duty Poly Garden Sprayer #1000. They are only about $15US and work well for this. They won't clog like an airbrush and you don't have to worry with a compressor or passing out from hyperventilating. Love me some wood ash!

  • I find that a spray of rutile and red iron ox also gives a nice toasty look in oxidation cone 7

  • What proportions of rutile and iron ox are you using? Have you tried this in a ^5/6 firing? What color range of clay body? Love the 'toasty' look of wood/reduc. firing. Thanks, Sharon

  • I mix them as it feels right, but roughly 3 rutile to 1 iron. Cone 6 should work, i fire with an digital controller to 1255 C. and soak for 15 min at top. The body i use is a buff brown s/w with manganese speckle. Hope it works, and let me know how it turns out. Jacques

  • It may be a while before I experiment with this. But I will certainly let you know how it goes. Thanks for the help.

    Sharon

  • Good luck with your spraying and firing. I am looking forward to the results!

  • Exciting stuff, Simon!! Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

  • Just realized you are about to produce your 500th video WOW!!!

A Big congrats and THANK YOU!

A cake with candles would fire your kiln for! HAHa BIG HAPPY 500th Simon your the greatest !!!

  • wood ash ,,,,,nice old school stuff...

  • silly question, but, wouldn't it be easier to use an airbrush for that?

  • Maybe I'm mistaken, but doesn't wood ash and water basically make lye or caustic soda?

  • Yes, and when one breathe in dry wood ash and it hits the mouisture in the lungs the same thing occurs. It creeps me to watch our friend, Simon, doing this.

  • I've spent most of my adult life heating with wood, which involves cleaning out the stoves and fireplaces periodically. All the freaking out about wood ash baffles me. Firing with wood probably exposes one to more ash than what Simon is doing. Simon is blowing wood ash in solution, not easily inhaled, unless by accident. Hopefully he puts the ash through mesh in a ventilated place, because it would make a mess out of his workshop. Just common sense.

  • Wow, you are really enjoying yourself! I envy you up there in the woods with the creek behind you and you can get to see the leaves change. Can't wait to see the kiln fired.

  • Man - O Man !!! I'd pass out !

I'm an asthmatic. I've used spray bottles but they clog to much.

I half expected to see some strange bird come down and make love to you or somthing! HAHA Or maybe you're just scaring off the bears. Do want to see the results! Best of luck with the firing, thanks so much Simon, we've about seen it all with you, your great!!!

  • This is such a cool technique. I'm very interested in your wood firing. I hope you will be posting clips of that as well.

  • Simon, please show us the finished pots and will you be firing to ^10 on this soda kiln? How well will this work for ^6 ox and Raku?

  • Hi Simon, I haven't seen this done much as I fire in oxidation. So interesting & so simple. Seems to me your brother John does this or is that kiln fly ash on his pots? So direct, fireplace-sieve-water-mouth sprayer. Wish it worked in electric firing but imagine it would corrode the electric elements while volatilizing, and to what effect on the pots if any?

  • I'd be interested in knowing that too - I've seen a couple of ash glazes for electric firing (cone 5/6) but it was for the runny ash effect, not for toasty fly ash effect, so I dont know if the other ingredients make a difference on the corrosion? If you're interested in that glaze, is on the Ceramic Arts Daily website (I havent used it yet, but want to)

  • The ones I see there are for ^10-? I was thinking of the acid nature of the ash itself, whether alone or with other ingredients. I know combustibles corrode the elec. elements, but this is pre-combusted... Maybe the only way to know is to try, and fire inside a saggar? Anyway, would likely be matt if used alone at ^6. Can you post URL to recipe at that cone? Thanks!

  • hi simon this might seem a silly question but have you used this technique in raku firings? if so how did it turn out.

    regards

    steve

  • Have you any idea if this can be done in oxidation too?

  • That is soooo interesting! I can't wait to see the finished pieces - and also to try it myself! I love your philosophy: keeping with the simple, natural materials and processes. Thank you!

  • Gracias
