Isn't it more likely that you'd be wearing clothes in a real fight, unless you're a nudist. The Gi isn't restrictive in any way and in fact a lot of times it is like an extra hand. It also masks the motion of your shoulders a bit, which can help keep your opponent off for that split second.
What kind of fight?? when you let the guy..carry other guy is that..kick a kick or punch a punch...common real life not like that...I think just more less a SHOW style
I mix pulling guard or sitting guard, with wrestling takedowns and judo throws. They all work well. You cant call a guard puller or something that just sits on their ass a scrub. That's they're game. It's just that the sitting guard game is becoming more popular because if you think about it, it's the ultimate position. They are all defense and you are all offense. They cant tap you, but you can tap them. If they can never pass, you can win easily.
@charliemurphyslaw That's what they do in ADCC. negative points for guardpulling. Don't generalize though. Not all BJJers pull guard. Most guys corsstrain in Judo and/or Wrestling now.
@WhtMike2006 the aim in bjj is to do submissions. I think it is important to understand some takedowns (and know how to do them) but the game really begins when the 2 opponents are on the ground. i prefer starting in the sitting guard because once you understand the sweeps from there, you understand how the human body works, and bjj.
@Mikelangelo267 Well I've trained for over 11 years and I don't believe the goal is strictly submissions. Of course the real BJJ game begins on the ground but as a martial art/combat sport we need to be more well-rounded. Pulling guard is weaksauce. I don't do it, and most of the people I train with don't, unless they abslutely have to.
@Mikelangelo267 cont... Having a knowledge of wrestling and no-gi Judo for sub grappling and Judo for Gi BJJ vastly helps "position over submission." Obviously, mastering the guard is vital too, and a sweep accomplishes the same thing as a takedown, but I guess I'm just a BJJ player that believes in not having to start off my back if I don't have to.
@Mikelangelo267 cont again.... With all that said, I am very comfortable fighting off my back if I need to. There's nothing like hitting a beautiful sweep on a tough opponent.
Dude, it's not lame... it's just different. Gi and NoGi are different things. Some are good at one, some are good at the other, and if you're Shinya Aoki you're good at both.
not authentic grappling man you are stupid. the gi or kimono is what the samuri would wear under their armor and in everyday life. the samuri were the ones to invent jujitsu so i think the gi is pretty authentic.
While a gi is different from a kimono, they were worn for sword practice and as clothing under armor. That's why Judoka wear them. Judo is descended from japanese jujutsu, which was designed to work against an armored opponent. As for legitimacy or authenticity... Wait for winter. Coats work the same.
a do gi is far more durable yes kano used a kimono as a base for it but it evolved to something totaly different. yes a coat can work the sam you can also pull of chokes with a t-shirt all im saying is a do gi is different from a kimono. if you go to japan and call a do gi a kimono you would get a strange look.
@allyourwill yes it was it was invented in Japan for Samurai to fight without weapons...What you think it was invented in Brazil?? LMAO thats called BRAZILIAN Jiu jitsu for a reason
Watanabe played very very smart and kept on stacking on the points throughout the match. He put Shinya in a position where he needed to get an ippon to win and made him play risky which even opened up the sweep at the end

It should count as two points to the guy on top every time someone jumps to guard. That would forse people to learn some takedowns.

That was the LAMEST shit ever. Wearing a Gi is sooo annoying how they just pull on them all day. it's not authentic grappling anymore. lame.
