  • get down and BOOgee, I love that!

  • the difference between these guys and the rest of the world is they don't do the same riff twice just an endless musical catalog in their head, these are true musicians

  • bs'd

Thanks for this. It is one of my favorite albums.

  • Gotta love how their the two greatest guitarists of all time and their making fun of each other in the song, now that's what I call humble. Great guitarists, Great musicians and Class acts.

  • Love it! Thanks daffydoug~ *hugs* ;)

  • @Texasfilly101 You're welcome!

  • @daffydoug May the God of Songs bless you for this that and the song

  • It don't get better than this folks...........

  • Clive James if you can't play, get out of the way.

  • Que c'est bon je rectifie c'est excellent ! je ne peux pas l'arréter je l'écoute sans cesse...merci Daffydoug.

  • Mr. Guitar learned so much at summer bible school......the teacher exploited his talents.....great sounds, great rhythm....nice chatter....send more sounds like this one......yessssss lots of smiles...

  • thats not bush

  • @levellifemars fuck bush

  • This is such a fine job and bringing smiles on your face til it hurts. Love it.

  • I really like this. He could sing when he wanted to. A really good one, Daffydoug. Thanks alot. They really enjoyed it, didn't they?

  • I really like this. He could sing when he wanted to. A really good one, Daffydoug. Thanks alot.

  • brilliant, i had this album on cassette years ago but it got eaten, that lick at 2 23 onward, bloody beautiful. Knopflers tasteful feel.

  • funny...!

  • pretty good but your no mark knopfler lol

  • Mr. D. Do you have a recording of Chet & Les Paul sitting around jamming at a recording session the tune "Picnic and Moonglow"? It is not the finished version, but I suppose on some CD/record. It's great. I found it on MySpace, but can't find it here on YouTube. I just want to hear it again. I luv it. I have it on my MySpace page. Les Paul uses a tad of profanity during the session but is very funny, & so is Chet. Playing is great. Do you know what I am talking about/where is comes from? Thanks

  • If ever you wonder why the guitar was invented, just listen to this.

  • This is my FAVORITE THING EVER!

  • So good it's just plain silly.

"Pretty good but you're no Mark Knopfler"

    Heh. Sweet.

  • @TheBitterWeed I was LMAO with Chet's "You're no Mark Knopfler". Many years ago Chet tells a tale about playing in a small town beer joint. (I think) At some point a patron tells Chet "Boy, you're pretty but you ain't NO Chet Atkins!"

  • @kencc4791 Chet was on a cruise ship at that time. He picked up an old guitar that some one had left lying around and he casually picked some tunes. (What ELSE would you expect of the world's number one guitar player??)

Some guy was sitting there watching him.

When Chet, Mr Guitar, finished, the stranger looked at him and said "Mr you're pretty good on that thing, but you sure ain't no Chet Atkins.

Chet told that story everywhere he went!

  • "I think i was sharp there"

"Oh just play, would ya, just play"

  • Why was this never filmed live? It would be amazing to see these riffs done so we could watch them happen!

  • @wbvvmd1234 I think another Youtuber, has some videos of Chet and Mark doing these numbers.

  • @daffydoug Could you send the link? I have been chasing for monthes the video version of this nice song.

  • @dragonthedraco please send it to me also. this kind of music keeps me from shooting liberal dip shits .

  • @wbvvmd1234

If you're interested in learning the licks, there's a 'Neck and Neck' note for note tablature book available.

  • What the fuck's Clive James doing on the pic?

  • @AlecBeevors If you really must know, when I first started this channel, I had VERY few Chet photos to choose from and I had to use what I could find.

  • @daffydoug

Clive James is actually quite cool.

    Sorry

    I'll go now.

  • The reason Clive James is in the picture is because when Mark was in Nashville making his 1st solo album, Clive was there making a country music documentary, and he was trying to get a song he wrote made, and someone told him Mark was in town, so he interviewed Mark, then he re-wrote Clive's song overnight, got his band together and made the song, with Clive singing, and when they were making the song Chet Atkins turned up.

  • @qjamesfloyd

What's the song, is the recording available?

  • @2Touchstone The song is "If love means brushing someone else's hair" and it is not available. I's guessing Clive owns the only copy. A real rarity.

  • @AlecBeevors ...and why's he the one holding the guitar??

  • @AlecBeevors he did a show called clive james goes country and went around trying to get a song he'd written recorded, whilst discovering all about the nashville scene. it was around the mid nineties. you can see small clips from it on youtube.

  • @AlecBeevors Lollllllll Alec

  • @AlecBeevors .....What ever Clive wants I would suppose...LOL

  • @AlecBeevors .....What ever Clive wants, I would suppose...LOL

  • Two great musicians having fun is fabulously entertaining!

  • There is some 'slide' in there, difficult to tell where Mark and Chet trade off, they are both so gifted...

  • Thank you SOOOoooo much for posting this! RIP Chet. I played this for my dying G'Dad in 2002, he liked it... This album should have won a top Grammy, every song was GOOD! Sweet Dreams instrumental? How do they play this on old 'flattops'? Amazing!

  • The dude with the piano is the Aussie bloke Clive James....

  • brilliant song, lots of good natured banter, chet's smooth style and knofler's intense precision.....

  • dynasty206....just before that, not the harmonics part. The off key, well, I don't think they COULD play off key, but it's a weird lick.

  • looks like clive james on the left

  • what the heck is that lick at 5:10 to 5:12??

  • @steveyraynelson harmonics???

  • lol those quotes.. pretty good, but you're no mark knopffler XD

    "have you played before..?"

  • Who is the guy on the left in this picture?

  • The guy with the guitar looks like Aussie writer and broadcaster Clive James, who, despite being a top bloke, witty and charming, can't, to the best of my knowlege, play the guitar.

  • "Respect for your elders!" epic lol

  • such wit. haha

  • this song is the best duo of both mark and chet!! this song has so much meaning for me. [Neck and Neck]

  • Two greats paired with amazing styles and talent. Smooooooooth sound.

  • This is really a neat version combining these talents.....anybody not liking this sound must be tone deaf...!!!

  • ..every note has so much feel and sense to it

  • @jimireid1 how rude....who cares his ethnicity?? You only WISH you could play as well as either of them..

  • Great Post !!!! thanks buddy

  • Guitar Heaven.... when I die if this is the first thing I hear I'll be happy!

  • bwahha funny video response.

  • que maravilla!!

  • Thanks for this post. I bought Neck and Neck when it came out and I've forgotten how much I really enjoy these two together. Wonderful!

  • I lost an old cassette which had this on it - Thank you Tube !

  • You see ? This is just the kind of thing I've been talking about ! You can see that the "video" is just a picture with music behind it and ...then....the music moved closer and you have to say that these two finger-pickers going at it are just what I want to listen to right now....and I mean Right Now. ...and its just fine.

  • Thxxxxxxxxx!! That's great ! love it!

  • I love this!

  • thats not bush

  • A fabulous duo. Friendly competition, but trying to match each others licks. Both outstanding pickers with a lot of heart. One of my favorites.

  • The album Neck and Neck is a must have! There's never been a pairing of two great guitar players like Chet and Mark!

  • atkins is cool bush is an idiot!, love guitars!

  • Did Chet get that expression from George bush.

  • LOL

  • Comment removed

  • Spoily only by that idiot Clive James in the picture!

  • Oh I love ot! Thanxxxxxxxxxxx!!!

  • You've played before? :o)))

  • it's clear Chet's not cut out for singing, but, who cares I liked every crinkled note ,respect for your elders don't you know

  • This video is wonderful. These three guys are the best . It's fun to hear Chet sing and he's not too bad. I laughed when he said he learned this in Summer Sunday School. This old song has been around a long time and maybe someone here knows who had a recording of it years ago. I hope when I'm old gray (original words to one of the lines- nobody wants you when you're old and gray) ) that these words won't be true. I'll have to at least color my hair then. LOL.Thanks daffy for posting -Paula

  • " Pretty good - but you're no Mark Knopfler!"

    Wonderful.

    God speed Chet.

  • and he is only a part time saint

    yeah, that's good music

  • .....respect for your elders.....

  • I start the song and smile all the way to the end!:)

  • feel good factor

    stand back

  • I've always loved this instrumentally...but now I can' hep but grin harder when I wonder if MJ is finally givin' dead Chet some pointers he seemed to be askin' fer @ :56. Smile on.....

  • make it seem so easy don't they! I LIKE listening to this CD.

  • raf

    i got it

    brilliant

  • God Bless You Chet Atkins! The angels in Heaven are listening to your heavenly music! What a classy guy you were! Thank you for the happy memories seeing you in concert.

  • Thanks for this gem from "Neck and Neck".

That great album was an epiphany for me: I bought it as a M.K. fan. I wasn't into country. but this C.A. fella was damn good!

    Got everything I could by him and along the way I've stumbled across Les P, Jerry R, Meryl T, Django R, Tommy & Phil E, Buster B. J, Thom B, Lenny B, Muriel A, Philip Y, Paul B, ...

What a wealth from being introduced to "Mr. Guitar"!

A number of these great musicians are dearly missed - most recently Jerry R & Buster B. J.

  • One of the best album of all times.

  • or one of the best GUITAR albums maybe!?

  • RUGER1430. i'm not a musician but i know what scales are, and if they're playimg scales, then it's best i've ever heard. i would tell them, don't stop, keep it up..

  • and what'e more, they're so good, they don't even have to be thinking about what they are doing when they're doing it. and what a great old song. RIP Lena

  • just about the best song ,ever

  • I agree.......He was tops in country guitar playing. He had a sense of humor and it truly shows.

  • great, especially if you have a robust sub-woofer in your system. great southern music.

  • 6:05 to 6:10 -- how the =hell= does he do that?

I've listened to this hundreds of times since I got the "Neck & Neck" CD ages ago. It never gets old. Brilliant!

  • I think the passage is accomplished using left hand slurs. That's about all I can figure out!

  • sounds like he's playing scales in a certain key.

  • That one is one of the easier licks in the whole song. It's basically just one pluck, and two hammer-ons, then repeat that pattern one step/string higher but on the same fret, and then one step higher again on the same fret.

It's not even a scale, it's just "playing towards the e-chord"! And in this case the e-chord is the open A-major chord shaped E chord, on the 9th fret.

If you wanna try the hard licks, try the "summer bible school" lick, or the stuff around 5.04!

  • I forgot to mention, you have to do the "one pluck and two hammer-ons"-step toward the 9th fret 4 times (and not just 3 times.)

In other words start on the D string where you do the pattern, then G string, then B string, then high E string and back up again.

  • @b1zook It's just a serious of hammer-ons, not really hard to do just sounds cool - there are a bunch of more subtle licks on this album that blow my mind - two great gentlemen and pretty good players as well : )

  • @b1zook

Index finger, 7th fret 4th string...play the note, then hammer on with middle and ring fingers, 8th and 9th frets....and do the same on the 3rd, 2nd and first strings, then down again.

  • @b1zook

    Indeed....

  • Muskadash, think about it will you, the lyrics are a bit of fun, its not meant to be serious you fool.

  • Lovely guitar playing, shame about the silly lyrics.

  • you just can hear the fun they have. brilliant!!! mark is the man!

  • "...I'm only a part time saint."

The albums brilliant for anyone reading this that doesn't own it.

  • got it

    very gooooood

  • Ha! I love it, great song. "...but you ain't no Mark Knopfler". This is great stuff, thanks for posting.

  • Your certainly welcome!

  • @uforeportinfo pretty good but you're no Mark Kopfler. I agree, great stuff.

  • Two masters completely at ease. A delight.

  • The lick by Knopfler at 4:47...holy smokes.

    That whole break is sublime.

  • Masters ,simply masters , love it

  • NEVER A TRUER WORD SPOKEN or WRITEN LOL

    MERRY CHRISTMAS

  • Hello from Spain

i'm not sure, but the man with the guitar

appears in a documentary called "Clive James Goes Country" and try to play a song with Knopfler's band...soon i'll try upload a fragment so you can understand me.

    regards from Spain.

  • Who is the man with the guitar??

  • I have no idea....

  • @daffydoug Clive James (critic, novelist, TV presenter, poet, essayist, and all round nice guy).

  • @daffydoug I think it's the australian broadcaster Clive James

    PC

  • The man with the guitar looks like, as the other poster mentioned, Clive James (do a Google image search for the name, see if you agree). A Wiki article describes James as an Australian-born TV presenter and talk show host in the UK.

  • Yes, I think you're right...! :)

    Thanks

  • That's Clive Anderson from uk in the pic with Chet and Mark @countryfan5.

    A great interviewer...

The bee gee's walked off set on him when he asked them about their high voices !!

Funnily enough this song suits him perfectly.

  • Oops@LightningStrikesMice... Clive james I mean.

  • @countryfan5 The man holding the guitar is Clive James an australian broadcaster who has spent a lot of years living in the UK...

Absolutely no idea why he is here posing with mark or chet...

    weird!!!

  • Looks like Clive James.

  • It is Mark Knopfler, Chet Atkins and ??

  • Looks like George Bush.

  • Nah.. GW is thicker.. on the shoulder..always playing golf.

  • absolutely! i said the same when i saw him the first time! however, Chet only gave us good things while he was alive. Rest in peace.

  • I love this & I forgot all about it. This You Tube is brill!!! Thanx for posting.

  • Never get tired of listening ! It always puts me in a good mood.

  • Me too, melfree!

  • I couldn't agree more!

  • Probably one of the best tunes ever written. Lovely picking, and humorous yet meaningful lyrics. Simply brilliant.

  • What a great tune, thanks.

  • damn i love this song

  • Thanks for posting.

  • My pleasure!
